2. Step it up—and down. Climbing stairs is a great leg strengthener, because you’re lifting your body weight against gravity. In addition to taking the stairs at every opportunity, try stepping up and down on the curb while you’re waiting for the bus or filling your gas tank, says Brooks.

Size doesn’t matter: I’m in sports training right now and my heart’s big once again. The size of the heart is not a concern. I’m an autopsy pathologist, and 100% of obese people have enlarged hearts simply from carrying the weight. Ditto if you’re doing serious athletics. A large heart is no more a liability than a weight-lifter’s big biceps — it’s what the enlargement is a marker for. Big or not, you’ve done well. …Read more

When I go on a low fat diet, with not so many ‘heavy’ foods, I end up needing more carbs to calm my appetite, and this helps dry my body, but I can tell my body is not happy being on carbs as primary fuel, something feels off. I don’t lose any weight either.

can you make like stir-fry’s? the day you’re supposed to eat all those tomatoes and vegetables can I make like a spaghetti sauce and have it over baked spaghetti squash? or is it best to keep it to raw veggies?

*But you’re actually eating MORE FOOD. You’re just eating Less Calories because weight loss foods have a ‘low calorie density’ meaning they pack a small amount of calories in a lot of food (see rule #4 for below more info)

Don’t blame yourself if you aren’t perfect. If you once fail at your attempt to curtail your overeating, it doesn’t mean you are a failure at weight control and that you should just give up. Accept that you made a poor choice, but don’t let that poor choice influence the rest of your meal plan. The same holds true with exercise. Skipping a few workouts doesn’t mean you can’t get back on track. Weight control does not involve making perfect choices all the time; rather it’s about attempting to make good health choices more often than poor ones.

I am a 60 year old woman, who is in good health, but I’m 20 to 30 pounds overweight:/ About 2 weeks ago my husband and I began a 6 week crossfit boot camp, which we go to for one hour three times a week, and began a Paleo diet. We are really enjoying both. I lost 5 pounds the first week, and have gained back about 1/2 pound in the second week, although I have changed nothing about my exercise or diet. Help!!

Danielle – you may be experiencing what they call the carb-flu its basically your body detoxing from the carbs and sugar that we are no longer eating. How long have you tried eating this way? Usually the carb-flu will last about a week or so but for some it can take a couple of weeks before you start feeling really good – hard to deal with but is so worth it once you get over that hump! Another suggestion would be upping your fat intake and make sure you are getting plenty of sleep. research is showing more and more how very important the sleep aspect is for our health! Good luck I hope this helps!

Coat Brussels sprouts in 1/2 tsp. olive oil and bake at 425 degrees F until lightly browned, about 15-20 minutes. Coat salmon with 1/4 tsp. olive oil or a thin layer of cooking spray (1 second spray), add salt and pepper to taste (1/8 tsp. each). Bake at 425 degrees F until done, about 4-6 minutes. Serve brown rice, Brussels sprouts and salmon drizzled with vinaigrette and topped with walnuts.

Not much really. When I first went Primal, I walked everywhere. I just strapped the kids in the stroller and hit the road. I did CrossFit for about a year, and that was a lot of fun. Frankly, I exercised more before I went Primal, when I thought it was the key to weight loss. Now that I know it isn’t, going to the gym for the sheer fun of it doesn’t happen very often.

This meta-analysis looked at studies of diet only, exercise only, and diet + exercise. While all three of the interventions resulted in some weight loss, exercise provided, on average, a 0.3 kg (.66 pound) advantage over diet alone.

So did you try this binge eating advice once a week like this book? I am in a weight loss competition and I want to lose the most fat I can. Im afraid to try this because I dont want to mess up my diet. What do you think?

I haven’t missed the point. I understand paleo is a given. However, lean meat is not the solution. I really believe lowering food reward is key and addressing inflammation. Wild caught salmon is going to work a lot better than chicken breast. . I believe inflammation is interfering with the hypothalamus detecting leptin stores.

Reduce water retention by: Taking dandelion extract, as it has been proven to reduce water retention, drinking coffee, as studies suggest that caffeine can help you burn more fat and lose excess water, and mind your intolerances such as gluten or lactose, which can lead to excessive water retention and bloating.

Exercising 5-6 days a week is a lot, and many people’s bodies don’t like it. You may be causing inflammation in your body, and water retention in your muscles is one of the ways inflammation manifests. Water retention = extra weight and ill-fitting clothes. Exercising too much can also negatively affect your cortisol levels because it’s so stressful on your body, and unbalanced cortisol levels can inhibit weight loss.

The problem is that to lose body fat, we need to be in what’s called a “calorie deficit” for an extended period of time. This means that the number of calories entering our body (i.e. what we eat and drink) have to be lower than the calories being used by our body (i.e. general metabolism and physical activity).

Sometimes, though, insulin stays elevated all the time. This prevents you from running off your stored energy reserves, because you’re constantly in “storage mode” and never switch over to burning those stored calories. In this situation, you’re eating enough calories, but they’re not available for energy, so your body is starving (and you still feel hungry) even though you’re gaining fat. It’s the worst of both worlds.

Weight loss is not synonymous with health. The only requirement for weight loss is a calorie deficit; there is no need to exercise or eat healthy. A healthy lifestyle is much different and requires more than simple weight loss.

7 months now and have lost almost 70 lbs. I have been fighting weight issues all my life and have lost well over 300 pounds off and on, but always comes back. With Paleo the weight has stayed off and I am continuing to lose weight. Now I do lift weights every morning for about 45 – 60 minutes so I’m sure that helps too. All I can say is that for the first time in 21 years since I decided to start losing weight, it truly feels like I don’t have to stress about the weight coming back. I do fell hungry at times, but I just eat more Paleo foods… I was 335 lbs and now I’m looking pretty good at 265!

“You can join in and celebrate birthdays, holidays and meet friends for a few drinks if that’s what you enjoy, then just start the following day with a nutritious breakfast and continue your usual tasty, healthy meals.”

I think intermittent fasting is a great strategy with good science behind it, but many individuals who find it and look to it as a strategy, are often already in a state of adrenal fatigue. Cortisol helps to boost blood sugar during fasting states (most notably overnight)…so if you go for long periods of fasting while also being adrenal fatigued, you can exacerbate the cortisol issues. So I’m careful to address adrenals first before turning to IF.

Meal prep makes remaining Paleo much easier, as I have recently learned first hand. Back when Paleo and Crossfit was somewhat new, I followed both regimes and reaped the rewards. I stopped, and went to “hell” again. I’m back, have incorporated meal prep, and I am confident that I will be able to remain unstoppable.

To guard your health while still reaping the weight-loss and fat-loss benefits of a liquid diet, you may want to consider enrolling in a medically supervised liquid diet program run by a physician or by a major medical center. These programs combine prescription liquid diet products with medical screening and monitoring, counseling, support groups and exercise so that you safely lose as much weight as possible. The programs cost more than commercially purchased diet shake products; the diet program at the of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center, for example, costs around $600 a month. However, the extra support and supervision they provide could make the difference between weight loss success and failure.

I just ordered your book on Amazon. I eat Paleo and have lost quite a bit of weight over the last year. I used to run a lot, but I found training for my last half marathon was taxing and stalled my weight loss. I am leaning towards strength exercise and less cardio (shorter runs). I like the Jillian Michaels Body Revolution Program. I did it a few years ago. Do you think this program will help or hurt my continued weight loss, leaning out, efforts? It is 6 days a week, 30 minutes each, consisting of 4 strength workouts and 2 cardio workouts. I tend to be the kind of person who needs a regimented routine so having a program just helps. What do you think?

According to Boldsky, vitamin D is always recommended for those who try to maintain weight after losing weight. It will increase the amount of leptin in the brain – hormone that signal your stomach is full. Therefore you can avoid overeating.

If you’re using all that extra free time that these devices are affording you to take long walks, ride your bike, or in some way regularly exercise—great. But let’s be realistic: Most of us are spending those hours sitting in a car or slouched in front of a computer or TV.

-Another possible cause of keeping the weight on is a food allergy that you are unaware of like eggs. Apparently, a lot of people are sensitive to eggs even though they are good for you and okay on the paleo diet. Since I discovered that I have this sensitivity, I eliminated eggs from my diet last March and the scale finally budged! If you are eating eggs, maybe try eliminating and see if this helps?

Can a Paleo diet help you lose weight? Absolutely. While it does exclude certain foods with nutritional value, like dairy, whole grains, and legumes, this approach does promote eating whole, unprocessed foods that contain a balance of protein, fat, fiber, and quality carbohydrates, and it cuts out all refined grains and most added sugars.
