This is called the Food Reward Hypothesis. Basically it goes like this: the foods available in the modern world are more intensely stimulating than anything our brains evolved to deal with. Most people innately find certain tastes and textures (sweetness, saltiness, crunchiness…) pleasurable; this pleasure is called food reward. Highly processed foods overwhelm our brains with a level of food reward that they simply can’t handle, creating a kind of food addiction and throwing our natural taste for healthy foods completely out of balance.
Thanks for this post. It came at a perfect time for me. I added a link to my blog so others can read it as well. I recently started using My Fitness Pal and am really pleased to see how things are shaking down at the end of a day. I use it as a planning tool and a sort of watchdog. I’m not obsessive about it, but am learning a little more about how I’m eating. I trend toward what I call a WholePaleo plan; stick to Whole30 as closely as possible with a paleo flair. Again, I appreciate the information this morning.
Those core 10% I have always viewed as having internal medical problems like thyroid, metabolism etc. They get brainwashed also with the lies. They also make their problems worse with processed foods.
How to Fix It: Don’t beat yourself up for not following the Paleo diet “perfectly” from day one. Instead, work on gradually cutting out things that you’re not supposed to be having. Trying to be perfect and then getting down on yourself because you slipped or cheated just makes you feel bad. Realize that it’s a process of swapping old habits with new healthier ones, and give yourself credit for making regular progress.
Satiety comes from protein. Anybody who cant loose weight wile paleo should swap high fat meat to low fat/high protein. Chris’s new book,the personal paleo code will help to figure out these things so pls grab a copy. I did and highly recommend it.
Leah, I’m curious if you ended up going through with it, or you quit? I too had some stomach pain, but day three was my “cleanse” day and after that I did feel so much better and had so much more energy. My cravings stopped and I just feel better! I am on day 5 so don’t know my results yet, but I love all this feedback and positive input! It helps to hear what you can and can’t do from people with experience with the diet. Hope you got through it. I have SEVERAL pounds to lose, I have arthritis and I know I am a heart risk, so this is SO important to me, as life can be short! Good luck to you,

I started my journey just cutting carbs. I need to lose a lot of weight. Right now I need to lose 70 pounds to have knee surgery. My cousin recommended Paleo. I tried a modified version of it. The more I read and the more recipes I found here the less “modified” it became. When my doctor told me how proud he was of me yesterday I knew I’d made the right choice. I’m down 22 pounds. I’ve told my mom we are not on a diet it is a lifestyle change. She eats what I fix which is helping her with her weight. I feel better physically and mentally. The great thing is I’ve found recipes I can make and take to school with me including the energy bars. Drive on the freeway. I know it sounds weird, but I was so anxious before that I couldn’t drive on the freeway without having panic attacks. When I went to PrimalCon, I actually drove down a day early to stay with Orleatha and Chris Smith, an amazing couple I met at PaleoFX. I had had a ride all lined up for the following day, but I decided to leave early and go all the way to LA by myself.
