Even though the desserts made of coconut and almond flour are better options they should still just be a once in a while thing especially if he has no will power. Having too much of these treats can still hinder weight loss. If he’s good about focusing on the protein and veggies (and some good fats too!) that would be the way to go! Once he’s been off the ‘treats’ for a while it get easier to stay off them or only have them once in a while! I’d recommend sticking with the Paleo food you’ve been eating (obviously it’s working given the weight loss you’ve had) and adding more strength training to your exercise. You might not lose those 5lbs, but instead increase your “tone” which is probably what you really want anyway!

It’s probably worth noting that when I’m at the gym, I have the bike at a such a high level I struggle to finish – usually heart rate is about 180 – 185 per minute towards the end. I’m not very good at running, so on the treadmill I tend to do 5 mins on a fast run (14km/ph for me) and then for the remaining 15 mins, I will put it on a high incline and run for 2 mins (10km/ph) and then walk for 1 min or vice versa depending on how I feel.

Hello, I’ve been looking through the comments! Has anyone experienced stomach pain. I’m on day 3 and my stomach hurts. I have been eating the soup according to the recipe. And I have not cheated at all, I want to follow through since I have already started! Any reason why? Most of the feedback looks positive, am I maybe doing something wrong?

hey ba i also got the lapband done 2 years ago ive lost 110 pounds.My lapband doctor told me to make i take my vitamines everyday because i still cant eat veggies..I also have to do a fiber drink so i can get my fiber.Sense there is days i cant eat cause i regeratate he tells me to make sure i drink my protein shakes to get my protein in me..I know ive come to realize i can eat eggs good and fish they go down pretty good with out pain.Today i started a egg white diet to see how it works..I know theres time i get aggervated cause i want to eat and enjoy family meals like on holidays thats the hardest for me..what kind of exercises do you do to help you lose weight?

I have been on Paleo for 3 weeks now and I’ve only lost 4 pounds 🙁 I am spinning 3 times a week and doing boxfit 2 times a week. I still want to loose 26 pounds. I’ve heard it was more about eating too much fat with carbs is a problem (which it would be if you were eating a ton of nuts and seeds), but a surplus of just fat in the diet isn’t a problem and may even be helpful…provided, obviously, you are not consistantly eating more calories than you are burning, of course.

Katrina, you could have been me posting this! I agree 100% with you. I also was a vegetarian, even trying veganism for a short time and teach at a public school. I eat one starchy vegetable per day, love the vegetable choices, and eat about four ounces of protein three times per day. I have lost weight, have much more energy, my inflammation issues are gone as are depression and anxiety for the most part. I also rarely get sick! This is the first lifestyle change I have made where I no longer experience cravings for junk. It is very exciting and a huge relief. If, for some reason, the only food available is something I am not willing to eat, I can refrain from eating without feeling faint. My anemia and ovarian cysts have diminished. You are right, also, that Paleo can be expensive if you let it. We just do the best we can and eat seasonally. Certain months we have more money and stock up on grass-fed foods. We are able to go hunting, crabbing, and fishing where we live. We can grow our own food. We have farmer’s markets and farm shares we can purchase. I used to work at a grocery store and was honestly repulsed by what people bought to feed their families. Even prior to going Paleo, my family ate whole foods for the most part. These poor kids have to try to learn while trying to live off of factory-made, processed, junk. I work at a lower-income school and many of the students have bags of hot fried cheese curls (not sure if we can mention brand names) for breakfast and/or snack plus a sugary drink. The school does not allow candy but it wouldn’t be any worse! I try to teach lessons that revolve around healthy lifestyles and good food choices but these children don’t have much of a choice in what their parents have available.

I have tried countless times to do the Paleo diet and I continue to fail. I blame this on the fact that I fail to do the first step which is to clean out the old and bring in the Paleo foods. After suffering with gastronomical issues I realize that this is probably the best diet out there in terms of digestive distress. Also, with my blood type being O they suggest limiting carbs, but it’s just so hard! Not counting calories while on a “diet is not easy to say the least for me which could be another reason why I find it so hard!

As stated above, fruit does have quite a bit of sugar in it, and nuts have quite a few calories, so if you are following the Paleo Diet but not losing weight, check your fruit and nut consumption and see if you are loading up on those at the expense of vegetables and healthy protein.

great discussion. a paleo template is a great plan to do the best for good health. it takes personal tolerance for food and likes into consideration with resultant improved health and gradual weight loss. after all, all that extra weight we are lugging around with us was not gained in a week or two but. over a considerable time whilst we ate more than we needed of food which was nowhere near real or natural. I have been on paleo for approx 3 years due to medical conditions – gluten intolerance soy and dairy allergy – and now i am so much healthier – no joint pain less digestive pain and problems and I am gradually shedding the last six kilos my heart specialist advised me to lose and this would bring me to my best weight for my height and body build. I find that paleo is very straight forward to follow and very free-ing – no calorie counting or weighing portions of food. and. no constant counting of points and preoccupation with food all day. overall I have lost 27 kilos over two years and have kept it off and am still losing gradually – I do tai chi, shi bashi. and weight training

I find everything going on here very troubling. I think the point you make in #8 “You may have a tricky food sensitivity.” is especially important. I suspected I was reacting to a particular food, besides gluten, but I couldn’t figure out what it was. I’ve not heard this about dairy fat before. I’ve only heard that medium chain fatty acids (coconut oil) could be used almost immediately for energy. Would this not have a similar effect? I would really like an excuse to eat cheese though, so thank you (?).

theres nothing wrong if you only weigh 125 pounds! 🙂 I think your diet is fine minus the 3 oranges at night… although a citrus fruit they tend to be super high in sugar… To me it seems like maybe you shd just add a little cardio to your plan since your still unhappy with your weight (which happens to be a number I myself would turn sideways and disappear if obtained lol) it shd do the trick.

What can’t you eat? Dairy products, grains and legumes are all out of the question. So is anything refined or processed, since that wouldn’t have been available back in the Paleolithic era. Salt and sugar are also out. Some versions of the diet ban caffeine and alcohol as well.

I think the issue is what is done with the results and how they are presented to the public. Coke is spending millions of dollars here and has a marketing PR budget that researchers don’t have so they can take the findings and share them and use them to try to fight policy and all these laws that are being debated about taxing soda. Coke has this body of evidence that is biased since they are funding exercise studies and not diet studies. They can then use these in public policy debates, and I think that could be really worrisome.

There’s plenty of reasoning behind WHY this works. For one, cutting out sugar, grains, refined oils and other hyper-palatable foods means we’re overeating far less. It’s quite easy to down two donuts or two slices of cake, which blows our portions out of proportion without much effort. Eating seconds of a kale salad? It’s not as tempting, and even if that salad is really good, a second serving won’t break the bank.

Not true for all people, especially those with metabolic disorders. I recorded all food and all activity for 30 days. I decided not to to get on the scale during this time because I wanted to surprise myself at the end. I had a 900-1300 DEFICIT every single day. I should have lost somewhere between 7-12 Lbs. I got on the scale on day 31 and had not lost one single pound. I finally went in and had my thyroid checked and found out I had elevated TSH levels. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and was told that calories in vs calories out mean very little when your thyroid does not function normally. I had to eliminate all dairy, gluten, sugar, and all processed foods from my diet which is why I am now paleo. Thought I’d let you guys know, I started this diet on Monday and I’ve already lost close to 4lbs. I am 29 years old and I started this diet weighing in at 229, now I’m close to 225. I have been looking for a healthy way of eating after finally coming to terms with sudden weight gain. I have gained 27lbs within the last 2 years, (from 138 to 165) and frankly, I would rather lose it than buy new clothing. Breadie, there’s a change that takes place in many people when switching to a paleo diet. I’m 55 and up until about 3 years ago, when I discovered the paleo diet, I LOVED bread (and pasta, and other forms of grain). I tried to eat a “healthy” diet (think “whole” grains), but by this time in my life I was so metabolically deranged that I HAD to make some changes if I wanted to have any kind of quality of life. Osteoarthritis was kicking my butt and I was facing a knee replacement operation among other things. I pretty much started eating paleo out of desperation. I thought there was no way I could give up my bread, among other foods, but I did so out of desperation. What surprised me the most was that after a few weeks of eating a very clean, paleo diet, that “need” to eat bread and grains (and sugar) completely disappeared! I’d been on several different kind of “diets” over the years (such as Weight Watchers), and they were excruciating for me to follow, because they were allowing me to continue eating those foods I was addicted to (and didn’t realize at the time were harming my body). Completely eliminating the grains and sugar was quite eye opening to me, and now from what I understand those foods have an opiate affect on people. They stimulate the pleasure hormones and make us want more. I have not had to have the knee replacement, and my health has improved in COUNTLESS ways since adopting this way of eating. nope, paleo is not a given. it is very individual. chicken breast and beef liver wont give you any food reward if you prepare them not to. wild salmon is good but twice a week is more than enough for a different reason. You are digging in the right direction but have a long way to get there. Just don’t stop learning and everything will come to you. I’m 17 and I did the same thing as you; I worked out about 4 or 5 times a week and ate properly and for the first month did not really loose anything which was discouraging. My dad has been a body builder and personal trainer for 25 years and when I spoke to him about my frusteration he told me a few things. When you begin working out you have to keep in mind that you’re building a lot of muscle (which weighs more than fat) so your weight might not actually drop but you’re getting leaner. And of course the more muscle you build the more calories and fat you burn by doing nothing. After the month was basically done I started to loose weight quite quickly and have lost 25lbs in two months. My eating is by no means perfect (as I am still at 150lbs right now) but I am steadily loosing weight and if you hang in there a bit longer you’ll definitely see results.

I don’t know if I am not drinking enough water or I am just plain insulin resistant or if my thyroid needs to be increased as it was on the low side of normal. I am very frustrated. I may also be holding salt weight though I don’t salt my foods, but I know some things have 20% sodium content. I try to avoid those foods as well.

Tim also explains that it is not as simple as calories in/calories out. The type of calories you eat, especially when working out is very important. For example, eat carbs before a workout, your body will simply burn down the carbs. But, if you eat lean protein before a workout your body will use that protein to burn fat and build muscle.

I’m not technically allowed to do high impact cardio exercise whilst I am following the Metabolic Balance diet. It has something to do with burning fat versus muscle. But after I have lost another 10kilos, I want to get moving again. I have a feeling my 40’s are going to be my best decade yet.

Actually, if you read Tim’s book he talks about how eating more protein and healthy fats can help you get over your plateau. He advises eating one more egg in the morning as an example. I would also add oil and vinegar to your salad as dressing to add healthy fats. I don’t think cutting down the already low cal meals your eating would help. Read Tim’s book for some more ideas. 🙂

I’ve been on this diet for about a week now, but the biggest problem I have is the no beer rule. I know Tim does have wine, but I’d love to know exactly why beer is off limits? My thought would probably be 1) Tim says he prefers wine to beer 2) Beer tends to be high in calories (hence don’t drink your calories) 3) Beer tends to be high in carbs. Unfortunately for me, I’m an avid beer fan, and wine won’t cut it (light beer doesn’t either). Sooo what about something like Guinness Draught? It’s only 126 calories for a 12 oz serving and only about 10g carbs. There is some misleading information about beer containing a lot of maltose (very hight on the GI scale) however, maltose is mostly metabolized by the yeast during the fermentation process. Not to mention the fact that dark beer is also rich in anti-oxidants. So I guess I’m just trying self-justify drinking Guinness in place of red wine. Both options are hard to swallow for a craft beer nut like myself, but Guinness is the lesser of both evils to me. Does this pass muster, chemically/nutritionally?
