Then I started freaking out about the rules. I went to a concert and had a decision to make: eat at 5:30pm, which would break my wait-five-hours-in-between-meals-rule, or wait to eat after the concert at 10pm, which would then break the don’t-eat-after-9pm-rule.

Alcohol causes digestive issues and is often full of sugar, so can result in bloating (and the awful sluggish feeling that comes with it). If you want your stomach to be flatter by the end of the day then stay away from alcohol for today.

Still, some good points, or rather, reminders. You may want to check with your doctor and find out how many calories you should be taking in when breastfeeding so the baby gets all the nutrients and you also will get the nutrients. If the baby takes everything, this could have an effect on your body especially your bones if you are not receiving enough calcium. Good luck!

Hi Laura. The potential problem with reducing carbs and increasing healthy fats is the caloric increase. If you do really low carbs you’d go into ketosis and burn fat. But if you go for healthy fats while continuing with carbs, the insulin (that drives you blood sugar into your cells) will keep you from efficient fat-burning. So, one thought is that you’d want to consider either further carb restriction (to make you a better fat burner) or going a bit easier on your fats (to decrease overall calories until you reach that tipping point where you start to lose weight), IF you can do that and still feel satiety from your diet.

I am 54 and on my 2nd week of Paleo which I adopted to feel better and eat healthfully. I have struggled with losing 10 lbs for the past 6 years after trying EVERYTHING. 3 lbs would come off, 4 would go back on. I am getting a bit discouraged here since I feel like I am doing everything right and I am still struggling to lose weight and keep it off…I know these last 10 pounds are the hardest to lose but I am wondering if something else is to blame for the plateaus and recent weight increase after a weight loss.

Meal prep makes remaining Paleo much easier, as I have recently learned first hand. Back when Paleo and Crossfit was somewhat new, I followed both regimes and reaped the rewards. Now if anyone is like me, I did not want to go to a gym as an excessively flabby person (or EFP if I may) so it was great to first loose weight sitting at home, doing collegely study-like things, reading, video games, etc and then be able to start exercising (I chose swimming because its fun and I have large breasts that make it hard to run in public, not bragging but very true nonetheless. They are all submerged when you swim). I gained confidence and even competed in the cosplay contest in Salt Lake City ComicCon 2015 as a Borg drone and won second place (that is bragging). I continued on the diet simply because my BRAIN WOKE UP! I could think so much clearer on a carbless diet and I swear grades went up because of it. The greatest difference was my ability to focus on things. I went from focus-of-a-knat to focus-of-a-cat (I assume they are good focusers?). So that was, after the weight loss, the reason I kept on the diet. But I often break from it for icecream. Hopefully that’s not going to turn the tides on me…

I’ve been doing very well, but still feel the whole thing is very “loose”/informal. I’m not viewing this as a diet, but as a lifestyle- but I’d still like to have some order in my life and actually know which paleo foods I can and can’t be eating to start with. For example, I read nuts and some fruits were okay, but after consuming three granny smiths over the past week and several handfulls of nuts (cashews and almonds), I read it’s ideally best to leave these things (nuts and fruits) out for the first bit of the diet. Moderation is something I never knew in my previous life so restraining myself to just a few nuts is hard so it’s for that reason I’m thinking to cut them out altogether- with me it’s all or nothing.

The lap band worked great. Lost about 115 pounds in 2 years. I’m doing this diet b/c my normal diet had become really crappy. I started eating food that was “easy” to eat due to the lap band. Not complaining but ther are a few inconveniences. I was really huge and now just want to get off the last 40 or so pounds. This new way of eating has got me back to following the “eating rules” of a lapband aswell as improving my diet. I have lost about 15 pounds in the first month, feel much better and I can tell I am stronger in my golf game-distance, stamina, etc due to the kettlebell workouts. By the way, I didn’t gain the weight back from the lap band, just was really big and had let my choice of food be dictated by convenience and not what I should be eating. Anyway, I waould have the lapband done again in a heart beat- literally added years to my life.

Knowing that I could be a vegan or an almost total meat-o-saurus (e.g. Kitavan vs Inuit) or anything in between, with appropriate gut bacteria (feed them and they will come), and acknowledging any peculiarities I might have (e.g. gluten, lactose, nut, or other intolerance) I can tailor a lifestyle for myself that ticks all my boxes AND is as healthy as we currently believe it can be.

As funny as it sounds, sleep deprivation may make you fat — and not just because you’re susceptible to cases of the late-night munchies (although there’s that too). There’s tons of research that demonstrates getting less than the desired amount — about 7 hours — of sleep per night can slow down your metabolism. Plus, when you’re awake for longer, you’re naturally more likely to nosh. So don’t skimp on your ZZZs, and you’ll be rewarded with an extra edge when it comes to shedding pounds quickly.

You really nailed it, in my opinion! I spent decades experimenting and researching nutritional paradigms and paths, and found that I feel best consuming a lower fat, higher carb diet. My hubby is the opposite. He thrives on lots of fat and protein, and of course still needs good cards for energy but never feels good when he eats the way that feels great for me. I see so many arguing the low fat versus low carb thing, I wish more realized that both are great, depending upon your own body, preference, etc. I also love your suggestions to lift heavy 2x per week and mix it up with other things. I like to lift 2-3x weekly and do Bikram (minus the heat) at home 2-3x times, such a nice balance. So “brava!” on another terrific article, very helpful and very wise. 😉

Breadie, Have you read Chris’ book “Personal Paleo Code” or even tried to cut grains or processed foods out of our diet? I was vegan for a short time and felt that was way more restrictive than a Paleo style diet. My autoimmune disease became much worse on a vegan diet and became better on a Paleo style diet. I just think you might want to try and read Chris’ book, before you claim Paleo is restrictive. He does believe that everyone is different and some tolerate some foods better than others. There isn’t one template that works for everyone.

I have a problem though. I am such a picky eater that I can hardly find any recipes that I would eat or even sound remotely edible. Im struggling badly! I cannot change my taste buds….and I find that im eating the same dang thing every day and eventually im going to get sick of it. And im afraid that I will give up and go back to the comfort food I love. I eat meat and fish but my stomach can only handle so much meat. I eat some allowable veggies but only few. Fruit is not an issue; however, needing to lose a lot of weight, that is a lot of sugar which I gave up in starting paleo. I absolutely hate salad. Hate hate hate hate it. But before trying paleo, I tried eating crunchy lettuce type salad with ranch. Now ranch is a no-no and juts eating raw lettuce is not good to me.

Frittatas – Enjoy a breakfast frittata with no post-breakfast remorse. Kale and red peppers make it a veggie delight! There’s bacon in this as well, but you don’t always have to have meat in every Paleo meal. If you want to leave out the bacon you can and this will still taste great. It’s always a good idea to follow what you’re craving and keep your body satisfied.

I think it’s great that you are committing to the paleo lifestyle for bettering you and your family’s health. We are also just starting this journey. We have an 80/20 lifestyle right now for no processed foods, which I thought was a good step towards health but decided the paleo lifestyle, after a bunch of reading, was actually way healthier. The downer for us is dairy……we are committed to doing the paleo on an 80/20 scale also. We will do paleo 80% of the time and the no processed foods the other 20%. Your body can suffer if you do not exercise. Losing weight without exercising can be beneficial only temporarily, and if you turn to diet pills, rigorous dieting, crash diets, etc. for weight loss, these methods can lead to many unhealthy side effects.

This is week 7 for me on the plan.. with a few minor cheats along the way. I am taking 70% less of my pain meds for arthritis, feel more energy and mental focus.. and losing a pound a week.. slow and steady. This plan is a keeper for me.

so sorry to dig up an old thread but the reason I am searching is because I am taking graduate biochemistry courses in school right now and one thing I learned is the niacin inhibits hormone sensitive lipase. Given that my current goal is to lose body fat and that is the enzyme that breaks down fat in adipose tissue for energy mobilization, I searched into google “Niacin bad for fat loss” and came across this page. I want to comment on your crock pot chile recipe. I make practically this same recipe, ingredient for ingredient, but I do the whole thing on top of the stove and just let it simmer on low till much of the liquid evaporates or until I’m so hungry I just have to dig in. Also, I often have a bowl for a brunchy kind of thing by serving it with two eggs, sunny side up, on top. Sort of a huevos rancheros without the ranchero part. It’s really delish!

Gluten-free: This diet includes toast and crackers, which traditionally include gluten in the wheat. You could buy gluten-free versions if you chose to, but going gluten-free is not a feature of this diet.

Also, to add to what Gregory said, you may be using a lot more salt than normal, depending on how you used to eat verus how you are eating under paleo (or possibly a lot less potassium). Try monitoring your salt intake and rule that out; a good method is to put a daily recommended intake’s worth in a small bowl/ramkin/cup and only use that in al of your cooking and all of your seasoning for the day.

theres nothing wrong if you only weigh 125 pounds! 🙂 I think your diet is fine minus the 3 oranges at night… although a citrus fruit they tend to be super high in sugar… To me it seems like maybe you shd just add a little cardio to your plan since your still unhappy with your weight (which happens to be a number I myself would turn sideways and disappear if obtained lol) it shd do the trick.

You are absolutely right on track with your realization that Paleo is more than a diet, it is a “lifestyle.” It’s been a few days since you left this comment, how are you doing? Just a heads up that the first month of Paleo is quite challenging for most people, as they break-free from addictive foods and go through “The Dreaded Detox.” Most people get past this after 4-6 weeks on the’diet.’ With regards to nuts, the general consensus is ‘a small handful a day’ doesn’t seem to cause most people any issues. Fruit is a different story. Fruits are almost entirely made up of carbohydrate, with some fruits containing more carbs (i.e. bananas) than others (i.e. granny smith apples). In general, minimizing fruits (and carbs in general) will expedite weight loss. Also, if you can save your carbs/fruit till later in the day, they will have less of a ‘roller-coaster’ effect on your blood sugar throughout the day. Dried fruit and fruit juice are some of the highest-carb foods out there, and for this reason I personally avoid them. Having said all that, everyone is unique with regards to how many carbs their bodies are optimized with, and it does take some trial and error at first to figure out what will work best for you.

In addition to healthy foods, the dietary regimen for cardiac patients should include regular exercise that is age and weight appropriate and a daily caloric intake that is commensurate with the daily energy expenditure.

One friend of mine had dropped 15 kilos in two months with this diet that obviously worked!  This is put forward as a seven day diet, and although I am not always in favor of ‘crash’ diets, this one does merit some study.  It is reputedly from Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital and is used in their cardiac care unit for overweight patients to lose weight prior to surgery.

Why try and pretend that Paleo is very easy for everyone? Some people are vegetarian and eat a lot of bread. This diet would be a nightmare for them. Be honest. Paleo is very restrictive, unless your diet already revolves around meat and little else.

I am on day two of Paleo and after reading the comments here I feel I must be doing something wrong. I have cut out most sources of carbs but still east fruit and sweet potato, I don’t feel hungry or tired at all (which is actually an improvement for me), in fact I feel full after every meal and haven’t found it difficult to stick to the diet. I run and gym at least 5 days a week anyway so I am continuing to exercise.

I am not sure if Taye on her January 17 querry got the right help. I have a diabetic condition and use ACV to manage my sugar levels. I however realised that when mixed with medication for diabetes it can lead to hypoglycemia. I recently googled symptoms of hypoglycemia and one of them is having nightmares. So Taye might be having very low levels of glucose due to ACV and possibly condition that does not correct the low levels i.e. diabetic condition or other condition

Yes, there are some people out there who can just “eat whatever they want” on Paleo and still magically lose weight. I’m curious to know how Intermittent Fasting can play a role with this, since you mentioned eating more in the morning, especially proteins? I would love to eat food in the morning but then I will eat just as much later on in the day. So I’ve been using IF especially to keep from eating at night.

It is quite difficult to lose 10 pounds in one week. Losing 10 pounds in three months would be a piece of cake, comparatively speaking. You would still have to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet though.

Allan I agree with Prioris’ comment. You may want to step away from the scale and go by measurements (particularly your waistline measurement) and how your clothes are fitting. I know its hard to do that but that number on the scale can fluctuate for so many different reasons. Another suggestion would be maybe not to try to do it all at once maybe take a couple of weeks and get your ‘diet’ down and then add in some exercise. Its possible that too much change too quickly through your metabolism hormones out of whack and they signaled your brain to store fat rather than use it for energy! Good luck!

There are cases where some people have problems with their livers while taking CLA but that tends to be rare. We don’t know if they were on medications. I imagine that you don’t get a lot of choice with dinner as you’re both fourteen, but maybe if your family is having a high carb side to their meal (like potatoes, bread etc) you could sub that for a salad or a carb which is easier to digest like sweet potato. You could cut your dinner down a little too and eat a smaller portion than you usually would.
