I tried intermittent fasting, but honestly, I felt that I had LESS energy for my morning workout. At a minimum, I need a handful of almonds before I head out for a 6 mile powerwalk. I generally eat something more substantial when I get home, but I need that protein to keep me moving at a good pace.
I’ve gained weight on this diet, and I wonder if its because I’m vegetarian. I try to eat equivalent amounts of vegetarian protein, its all high fat (but good fats). I work out daily. I’m not stressed. Tried intermittent fasting, tried eating more often, tried eating less fat, tried eating more fat, no difference. I’m confused. Will this diet only work for weight loss if I eat meat?

Research shows that fiber aside, liquid carbohydrates just aren’t as filling as solids. “When you chew a food, you generate more saliva, which in turn carries a message to the brain that your gut needs to get ready for digestion,” explains Koff. “Drinking doesn’t require such digestion, so the body doesn’t register that it’s full as quickly.” Plus there are the extra calories—48% more if you’re drinking that juice rather than eating the whole apple. (Do that daily and you may gain up to 4 pounds by year’s end.)
As funny as it sounds, sleep deprivation may make you fat — and not just because you’re susceptible to cases of the late-night munchies (although there’s that too). There’s tons of research that demonstrates getting less than the desired amount — about 7 hours — of sleep per night can slow down your metabolism. Plus, when you’re awake for longer, you’re naturally more likely to nosh. So don’t skimp on your ZZZs, and you’ll be rewarded with an extra edge when it comes to shedding pounds quickly.

People who weighed themselves at a set time each week not only didn’t gain weight but even lost a few pounds without making any other changes to their diets. They say that seeing the number can make you more mindful of what you eat throughout the week.
Remember that you’ll be burning calories while doing daily activities such as walking around, walking up stairs, and even breathing. It won’t be many calories, but you don’t have to expect to burn all your calories doing hard exercise.

I also found it really important not to have 100% off-limits While I did move toward a paleo-esque diet, too much black-and-white thinking and rules derailed me in a hurry! They still do. I can do ultra-strict diets for health reasons, but I tend to put on a little weight from feeling deprived.

I still enjoy one cup of coffee with cream and sugar in the morning, and a glass of beer or red wine before dinner. Fruit answers my sweet cravings and a handful of almonds answers the call for salty/crunchy.
I’m really lucky that both my parents and my husband’s parents have switched to a primal diet. They all ate real whole foods before the switch, so it wasn’t too hard for them. Learning that those “healthy whole grains” they had been eating weren’t so healthy after all was really the only thing they had to contend with. They all respect our dietary choices, which is something that I’m coming to realize I’m incredibly lucky to have. Until now, we’ve been skipping things like birthday parties, but the kids are at an age now where we don’t want to do that anymore. We’ll bring something for them to eat and talk to the parents before we go to see what they’re going to have there. So many kids have allergies to foods these days that we don’t really stand out as “the weirdos” if I phrase it properly. I just tell people the kids and I are allergic to certain things and it seems to placate them. As for restaurants, well, we don’t eat out. If we have to (and we’re leaving on a 3-day road trip to New Mexico tomorrow morning, so we’ll have to) I tell the waiters that we’re allergic as well. I honestly don’t care about spreading the word of our wonderful diet and lifestyle during those occasions, because 1) the waiter doesn’t give a shit and 2) they won’t take us seriously. However, if I say that I have a raging wheat allergy, they will make sure to clean the grill before cooking my meat. We also pack a lot of food to take with us on occasions such as these. It’s cheaper and the boys enjoy having a picnic much more than going to a restaurant.
Whole grains such as brown rice, barley, oats, buckwheat, and whole wheat also belong in your stealthy weight loss strategy. They help fill you up with fewer calories and may improve your cholesterol, too. Whole grains are now in many products including waffles, pizza crust, English muffins, pasta, and soft “white” whole-wheat bread.

Hi Addy, I started eating Paleo about a month ago, and I feel so much healthier. Everything you said just about sums up exactly what I’ve been doing. I don’t feel deprived of anything. My mentality is that I am doing this to live longer. I have lost weight (8lbs) without trying. Sometimes I will get cravings for something sweet so I’ll make my favorite snack: an apple (sliced) sautéed in butter with cinnamon. Yummy!
