Hi Chris, I have been on a paleo diet for 3 years now. Initially i lost 65lbs. I’m down to 220 now. I hike or mountain bike 6 days a week. 6 months ago I decided to start running. At 220 running is beating me up a little bit. I have been trying to take off another 20lbs but am stuck at 220. Do you have any suggestions to kick this platue in the but??

*Googling:* The GI of my favourite toast is 36 , so I’m happy to stick with that and use it with the verrrry handy breakfast protein recommendation (I’m so not into breakfast cereals – well actually, I’m good with ACTUAL rice or corn for breakfast), and go for beans on toast, or tofu-miso-vege soup for brekkie.

If you’re eating paleo, snack time probably looks a little different. While you might not be cozying up on the couch with a bag of pretzels, there are plenty of healthy foods that don’t lend themselves well to portion control.
Also, someone who is extremely overweight/highly metabolically resistant might still not lose weight on a high-protein/moderate fat/slow carb diet. The reason being that protein can be converted to glucose (from what I understand). Fat however, cannot. Your body can burn fat directly. This is why some diets (like atkins) stress lots of fat in the beginning. You don’t want to be eating lots of lard, though. 🙂 When your body no longer has any glucose left (this can take from two to six days because your muscles store a form of sugar for energy called glycogen), it will switch to fat burning mode full time. This may very likely be unpleasant at first, but you get used to it, and its temporary to fix your body’s insulin resistance. Contrary to some folks’ opinion (probably all carb addicts by the way), this state (ketosis) is not dangerous to a healthy individual. They mix up ketosis with a dangerous state caused by kidney failure called ketoacidosis. Not the same thing. Also, there has been no record of a low carb, high protein diet causing kidney failure in a previously healthy individual, ever.
Oh and I know the main problem of this type of diet is price. What I did was live off canned spinach like popeye and other dark leafy greens, eg asparagus. I have a steel belly so I ate they cold from the can but there are also fantastic recipes w canned veggies. I know its not natural and cavemen cant operate can openers or whatever, but as a college student, it worked for me. I also ate bologne. You also eat less quantities because meat and fat is more filling anyway.
Remember that the most successful weight management comes from dietary changes and healthy eating choices that will stay with you over time, not from diets that leave you feeling or result in binge-eating episodes.
Body composition can change as well. You can meet people who are super fit but weigh more than you could think possible. Would you rather be healthy, fit and weigh more, or weigh less with fewer composition results? Keep up the great work Debbie! Consistency is key!
Here’s a great example: For the same number of calories that are in a handful of peanuts (about two ounces), you can eat 2½ pounds of strawberries (about five of those green boxes that strawberries come in.) Eating “big” foods like strawberries, salads, and other fruits and vegetables can prevent hunger from taking over and taking you places you don’t want to go
Baked Chicken or Fish: Bake it with 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (or try avocado oil) and a few tablespoons of salsa; serve it with cooked vegetables (i.e. broccoli, asparagus, spinach) and whole grain starch (i.e. ½ cup cooked brown rice, whole wheat pasta, or bean-based pasta)
Yes… I am “eating clean” with Paleo and my nutritionist has me restricted to breads, dairy, pork, legumes and beans (starch makes sugar) (green beans ok), and oranges. I have been on the program 8 weeks as of today and I am 20 lbs down. I take supplements to kill off Candida albicans, parasites and fungal mold. So, any foods that are a contribution to sugar, yeast, mold and glycemic ups and downs, are out! I feel great by the way. Got some ways to go, but I am more than prepared. Hope this helps.
The simple act of consistently getting 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep every night (or getting a nap during the day if you can’t get that much sleep at night) makes it so much easier to stay on-plan with food choices, helps you intuitively eat appropriate portion sizes, and makes you feel more motivated to be active.
