If you really want to drive yourself mad, go read a mainstream article that’s either pro or against the Paleo Diet. In the comments, you’ll find a bunch of dietitians yelling back and forth at each other citing different studies and sources and then calling each other wackjobs.

I am 71 years old and discovered Paleo about 8 months ago while looking for something to help with some health issues. WOW. What a revelation. I dropped 20 lbs. I have always been told I look at least 20 years younger – but now I actually feel 20 years younger. I work full time and my overall health has improved. What a wonderful surprise. I have been enjoying your website and the e-mails I get from you. Keep up the good work. If anyone out there is wondering whether or not to try Paleo – my whole hearted recommendation is YES – GO FOR IT. IT WILL TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE.
Thank you for this post. I typically do a modified paleo and do okay- ie I eat some raw milk cheese and those KIND bars. Recently while traveling I ballooned and had to be at a wedding and was surprised when my dress was too tight. I’d had two KIND bars 2 days in a row (4 total) Angry and frustrated as you can imagine esp since I struggle with my weight I often feel like giving up this paleo- any carbs and I balloon. But I feel better overall and want to keep doing it, I do need to find better travel solutions. Any suggestions would be great. I try to eat organic grass fed meats but I also had to eat sausage and eggs from McDonald’s at the airport one day. You just never know what hidden sugars are in these foods. Let me know what people do for Paleo when you’re traveling and can’t eat at a proper restaraunt let alone prep your own foods. Thanks
People will say that it is all about greed. That is naive thinking. They have hidden agendas to destroy the populations health. The former is more palatable because people don’t want to confront the darkness and sociopaths who rule over them. They refuse to believe the powers that be would want to poison and kill them. The evidence is all over the place.
If I eat wheat or an overload of fructose, I get anxious and depressed. I don’t want to be anxious and depressed. It’s as easy as that. That being said, with the exception of wheat products, if there is crap in the house, I will eat it. So, I go grocery shopping first thing in the morning when my “willpower” is at its highest and I don’t buy any junk food or treats. That way it’s not in the house. Makes things so much easier. I’m also lucky that my kids are young enough that they aren’t buying things yet and my husband also has a wheat intolerance, so he doesn’t bring stuff into the house either.

I find everything going on here very troubling. In the promotional video from Coke’s group, linked to by the NYT, exercise scientist Steve Blair says we don’t know what is causing obesity and we need more research. That message is oversimplified and terribly misleading. We actually know a great deal about what leads to obesity. It’s not a great mystery. People are eating too much and not exercising enough…that makes it inevitable that people will be obese. The group’s emphasis on physical activity is misleading based on what the data shows. There’s no data to support saying if you exercise for 30 minutes three times a week that this will take care of the problem. We have data refuting that.

I am curious of the work out options on here. I’m a female and I like my weight but I need to lean up quickly( 7 weeks). I need to replace about 15 pines of fat to 5 pounds of muscle, I am religiously doing the diet, started last week, but it doesn’t say how much cardio/strength training needs to be done. I do Zumba for about 45 minutes 3x a week and love it and weights 2x a week, and I’m middle Easter and love hummus! Any thoughts?
Lifestyle and work habits partially determine how many calories we need to eat each day. Someone whose job involves heavy physical labor will naturally burn more calories in a day than someone who sits at a desk most of the day (a sedentary job). For people who do not have jobs that require intense physical activity, exercise or increased physical activity can increase the number of calories burned.

Your weight loss plan is very effective because it makes sense biochemically and you have succeeded in customizing it to your needs and tastes. I agree that the slow carb approach is much more effective than just eating the typical American diet and counting Controlling insulin is a key principle to remember when trying to lose weight. Another potential downfall is that going vegan means eliminating certain foods that are great for satiety, particularly those that are high in protein. At the most basic level, food is fuel. It gives you energy to do things. But very few people eat just for that reason. It’s at every social gathering. And it’s where a lot of us turn when we have a rough day.
But if you are someone with an autoimmune condition (I have Hashimoto’s), gluten does really bad things to your body. So when I started my journey, I said to myself that I was going to give it 3 months. I figured I was good for 3 months of no bread. So I did, and you’re right, it wasn’t easy. It required a change in thinking. And at the end of 3 months, I ate bread. Yeah, I binged on sourdough (the good kind from Boudin SF, all crusty and delicious. Chili in a bread bowl. Yum.)
Two-a-days, hitting the Crossfit gym six days a week, and hours of cardio a day are not sustainable and not healthy. Like mental and emotional stress raises cortisol levels, which contribute to hormonal imbalance and weight loss resistance, over-exercising creates a lot of physical stress. Our bodies respond to physical stress in a very similar way. We need to recover in order to function optimally.
Don’t eat anything packaged (cookies, poptarts, waffles, snacks) only eat fruits and veggies (preferrably raw with ranch maybe) lean meat (chicken, turkey) fish, and whole grains like oatmeal. Also eat dairy in moderation.
I’m about to start the slow carb diet, as I have a good 20-25 lbs to loose. My question is post diet. Let’s say I loose the weight and decide to start eating carbs in a reasonable manner, will that be ok. People tell me dieting doesn’t work as all the lost pounds will be gained back. How can one prevent that?
