The weight you gained didn’t just accumulate in one night, so it is sensible enough to expect the amount of time required to lose* weight. Exercise coupled with dietary changes may result to changing body composition though it may not present any difference on the weighing scale. It is more important to take heed on how you feel overall than how your clothes are fitting.

@einstein – Among paleo dieters, there are a lot of women that claim it the paleo diet is ineffective or causes weight gain. I suspect is because they might be making it look, taste, and feel too much like the standard american diet. Look at online forums and how many complaints there are from people seeking help. It does not look like a small percentage of people.

If you’re eating over 100g a day and you’re not really working out at all, then you may be getting too many carbs. If that’s the case, then you can start experimenting with eating fewer carbs – less fruit, sweet potatoes, Paleo sweets, non-Paleo sweets 😉 Too many carbs will quickly put extra fat on you if you’re not using those carbs up. By the way, the 100 grams I just referenced is a very rough number, and everyone is different.

I’d love to see this work for me as I could continue knowing there’s a chet day each week but so far I’ve made a really dramatic change to my diet (I have a sweet tooth & love fruit, rice & pasta) but with no discernible results 😦

It wasn’t easy for me to lose weight (even on Paleo) because I’ve never been overweight (and so there wasn’t many lbs of fat for me to lose!). In fact, every time I tell people I’m on a diet, I always get the shocked outburst of: “but you’re so skinny, you don’t need to be on a diet!!” But like most people, I get unhappy whenever my clothes started getting tight, and I could always tell (even without a scale) when I had put on weight. The fat always piled on around my stomach first 🙁

These are important points, Chris. Thank you. I think that weight loss is an area that has been under dealt with in paleo. Certainly any obese person going from SAD to Paleo will probably lose quite a bit of weight, but the rest of us who have been trying to eat right for a long time already may have trouble getting down to their ideal weight on Paleo (especially women, I would guess). This is something I’ve been working on myself for the past couple of years. I struggle around a BMI of 21, when I feel so much better and healthier at 19 (still fatter than the average Kitavan woman, lol!). I have also recently discovered your number one “Keep your food simple” rule. I have a theory about this. Food clearly serves both physiological and social purposes. Fancy dishes (usually calorically very dense) are reserved to special occasions in traditional societies (potlatches and other types of special feasting occasions). In the modern world where we are used to having anything we want, we have gotten used to having feast day be every day.

How old are you? I am also about 5’4” and I haven’t weighed 125 since I turned 30. And I was super skinny (size 4) and muscular then! I would be happy to be under 140 at this point. Our hormones and the way our bodies change as we age has a lot to do with it.

I am changing my entire family to paleo, two teens and my boyfriend as well as myself. They miss bread and sweets, but these recipes will really help. Only issues, one daughter hates coconut, so I will disguise that and see if she notices the taste and he doesn’t like curry, so I will make alternatives and my other daughter misses her sugar and chips. This shall be an adventure to say the least.

I think Tim’s examples are really his preferences. We are an adaptive species. The idea is to eat good, natural sources of protein, lots of veggies, and slow carbs. You can mix and match to your hearts desire and with whatever you have on hand.

If dieting doesn’t work, what should we do instead? I recommend mindful eating — paying attention to signals of hunger and fullness, without judgment, to relearn how to eat only as much as the brain’s weight-regulation system commands.

You don’t have to indulge in strenuous workouts to improve your body’s metabolism. The daily chores that we do at home also play an important role in giving our body a good workout! So stop being lazy and do everything that you can do such as cleaning the house, taking your dog for a walk or playing outdoor games. You can organize social gatherings that encourage sports activities like frisbee, golf, swimming or simple outdoors picnic. Dancing and paint balling are other fun ways of losing weight.

Just keep in mind that if you restrict calories and food intake whilst breastfeeding, you can seriously harm your baby’s health. It takes time to lose the weight, especially when BFing, as your body is awash in all kinds of fun hormones right now. Just enjoy your baby, eat well and eat enough. BFing Mums are recommended to INCREASE their daily calorie intake by 300 calories to supply the infant with the necessary nutrition. You can worry about skinny jeans soon enough; they’ll still be in the closet; but your baby is a baby for only a short while. Enjoy babyhood now, it’ll be gone before you know it.
