These lectins are not a fan of our gastrointestinal tract, prevent the tract from repairing itself from normal wear and tear. This can cause all kinds of damage.

So, no grains, no sugar, no processed foods. Whether you’re talking about the paleo diet or not, many studies have shown that an incredible number of diseases and lifestyle issues can be reversed with these three simple changes.[3]

While I agree that changing your diet from a vegetarian/vegan to a Paleo diet is difficult for many people, it truly takes time for many people to complete their journey. On the flip side, others really don’t have a the luxury of time to facilitate healing. These people need implement a whole foods diet that removes grains and legumes to heal their gut (etc).

Eat slower to eat less. It takes about 20 minutes for your body to sense that its hunger has been satisfied, notes Joanne Larsen of Ask the Dietitian. Avoid distractions, such as television or the Internet, while eating, so that you pay more attention to your body’s signal that it’s had enough food.

In November, Bleacher Report ran a feature exploring the growing trend of professional basketball players making the switch to plant-based diets. In it, many of the players claim that going vegan or vegetarian has increased their energy levels, aided their recovery, and helped them get leaner. When some of the most athletic people in the world make statements like this, it’s hard not to be at least a little bit curious.

Eat like a king for breakfast, a prince at lunch, and a pauper for dinner. Ever hear the phrase? It has some truth behind it. Eat early on to jump-start your metabolism and give you enough energy to last comfortably until lunch, and then dinner begin to wind down and eat the smallest meal of the day. Here are some examples of meals you could cook for yourself during the day, with one snack in between:

“When I wanted to fit into my skinny jeans again, I started running 20 minutes a day during my lunch hour. In two months, I’ve lost 20 pounds, have tons of energy, and just finished my first 5K. Those jeans? They’re too big now!” —Lauren Castor, Anniston, AL

Maybe. If you build a “calorie deficit” into your Paleo plan – eating fewer calories than your daily recommended max or burning off extra by exercising – you should shed some pounds. How quickly and whether you keep them off is up to you. A 2015 review in the Journal of Gastrointestinal Liver Diseases concluded that a Paleo-esque diet “might be an acceptable antidote to the unhealthy Western diet, but only unequivocal results from randomized controlled trials or meta-analyses will support this hypothesis.” On that, we’re still waiting. In the meantime, here’s what has been found about the diet and others like it:

One study from Kaiser Permanente found that people who received weekly e-mails about diet and fitness for 16 weeks substantially increased their levels of physical activity and intake of healthy foods like fruits and vegetables while cutting back on trans and saturated fats. I am also frustrated by weight gain, about 30 lbs. In 3 years! I am 50 yrs. old and at my highest weight EVER! I’ve seen many people at my gym lean out & get ripped eating paleo. I have tried low carb, higher carb, nothing helps. I even worked with a holistic nutrition coach for a month & lost a whopping 3 lbs. She had me eating no grains, sugar, (except for limited fruit), no eggs, nuts/seeds, nightshades, no dairy. It took 2 weeks before I lost ANYTHING. I was diagnosed with celiac 4 years ago. It’s been a steady gain ever since.

Dinner is usually a bit smaller than lunch, since my lunch is substantial. But still, dinner is some kind of protein and veggies- either a cooked vegetable or large salad. Again, I get very full. Oh, I’ll use avocado, coconut oil, fermented butter (I live in Germany and traditionally they’re not shy about fat options), yogurt, sour cream, raw cheese and the like so I ensure I get enough fat. So, of course it doesn’t take that much quantity to feel really sated.

  1. The amount of physical activity any individual person needs for weight loss can vary, but you will need to get both regular physical activity and follow a healthy eating plan to lose weight and keep it off.   A good plan may include 30 to 60  minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity, like brisk walking, done nearly every day. Find something you can do and find ways to enjoy it. Take a brisk walk  or a jog with a friend or your dog. Enjoy a video that gets you moving.
I use a body fat scale and my body fat went from 20.5% to 24% with my weight increase, as well as my clothes fitting snugger, so I know I gained fat. If you are gaining muscle, be encouraged because that is awesome! Your body will now burn more calories. If you are gaining fat, you may be eating too much fat (from the nuts and seeds, which are packed with calories) or you may be not eating enough, if you are being that restrictive.
So use the ear plugs and eye mask, invest in a comfortable bed that you actually sleep in, and do whatever it takes to get those 8 hours every night – or as often as you can. If you can’t get them at night, try to take naps whenever you can.
