When I was younger, I’d run 6 miles three times per week, and even with this small amount of running, I could eat pretty much whatever I wanted without gaining weight. Of course, I was in my early 20’s too. Not sure now that I’m past 30 that this would work quite as well. 🙂 Oddly enough, when I did run that much, I didn’t really want crappy food. I actually craved vegetables. I ate a lot of white rice and garden burgers. After my runs, I would drink a half gallon of OJ and eat 3 bran muffins. Still lost weight.
I was having issues losing weight last year even though I thought I was being really good with my diet and avoided gluten, and dairy for example and mainly eating paleo. When I had the stroke (a cluster of mini strokes) I was very I’ll, had a tonne of invasive tests, that were very painful. Giving up bread goods took me over a year to complete, 18 months on, since doing a health plan very close to this diet, I don’t struggle with Aphasia as bad as I did, I can now walk without someone with me, and I got back into employment. And yes this was caused by food intake.
I really like your point about addressing your whole life for weight loss. I lost 50 pounds and have kept it off for almost 8 years, and a big part of that was beginning to heal my emotions. Deeply depressed and anxious when I gained the weight, I wasn’t able to lose weight until I started loving myself just a *tiny* bit. Then I could begin caring for my body with kindness. Counseling helped back then, but now I practice many more tools like mindfulness, meditation, and tapping that could have sped up the process further.
Interesting your note about doing the butter/MCT oil coffee. I am paleo, and gluten free, and I enjoy the odd paleo treat, I found that since I stared the bulletproof coffee I have put on 9 lbs. My diet is much like listed here, seems healty enough. I have stopped the coffee for now and zero treats, it seems to be working.

Yeah, that does seem rather aggressive, although the math works pretty good. 180 days at a 900 cal deficit divided by the standard 3300 cals per pound lost equals 49 pounds. For good measure I’m throwing in cutting out beer drinking which accounts for an additional 3500 cals a week minimum.
Unfortunately, this advice rarely works because the brain has powerful mechanisms for overriding our efforts to lose weight. If you consciously reduce the number of calories you eat, your body responds by lowering your metabolism to match your reduced intake. So as you purposefully eat less calories, your body finds ways to use less calories. All while ramping up hormones that raise your appetite and drive you to eat more at every meal to regain the fat you’ve lost.
Mina, I don’t think you’re eating enough. If you are breastfeeding, you should be eating nearly 2500 calories per day. Don’t starve yourself, or you will have no nutrition to pass on to your baby. See a doctor at once.
I’ve been doing very well, but still feel the whole thing is very “loose”/informal. I’m not viewing this as a diet, but as a lifestyle- but I’d still like to have some order in my life and actually know which paleo foods I can and can’t be eating to start with. For example, I read nuts and some fruits were okay, but after consuming three granny smiths over the past week and several handfulls of nuts (cashews and almonds), I read it’s ideally best to leave these things (nuts and fruits) out for the first bit of the diet. Moderation is something I never knew in my previous life so restraining myself to just a few nuts is hard so it’s for that reason I’m thinking to cut them out altogether- with me it’s all or nothing.
The Highs: All my blood tests show I am 100 pre cent healthy. I broke down crying in Petronella’s office and I think part of it was down to the confirmation that I am not crazy: I knew something was wrong with my ballooning weight and her slip of paper was the proof.

I lost 10 lbs. The first 3 weeks without trying and without feeling hungry. And this is post menopause with a slower metabolism! I feel good and look good and will continue. Now for some exercise to take it further. I’m sure our paleo ancestors did a lot of walking.

We must divide the 1200 calories into 6 meals consisting of 3 meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) of 300 calories each which comes to a total of 900 calories. The remaining 300 calories should consist of healthy snacks and beverages that will be spread throughout the day.
