Wild game like deer, elk, caribou and antelope are leaner than farmed animals because they’re more active, aren’t fed grain and aren’t treated with antibiotics or hormones. Game meat also has about one-third fewer calories than lean cuts of beef and pork that you’ll find in the supermarket, while game birds — think duck, pheasant and wild turkey — have about half the calories of their farmed cousins. Wild-caught meat also has significantly less saturated and total fat. According to an article published in the Journal of Nutrition, a higher intake of saturated fat accentuates obesity risk.
Stuffed Yellow Squash – These squash get the ground beef treatment and make for a pretty well-balanced meal. It’s always good to have a built-in vegetable with your meal, and stuffing a squash with beef provides just that. The savory flavor of the beef goes well with the mild flavor of the squash, and this may just end up on your regular dinner rotation. The most successful Paleo dieters are the ones that have a collection of go-to dinner recipes to take some of the thought process out of dinnertime.
A Paleo template should be based on a foundation of real food, instead of reincarnations of baked goods from the standard American diet. The popularity of sweets in our culture has resulted in a Paleo-sphere that is over-flowing with an abundance of delicious, mouth-watering dessert recipes. Although these treats are made with acceptable Paleo ingredients, they are not necessarily health-promoting or helpful to weight loss efforts. The energy-dense nut flours and large amounts of natural sugars that these treats contain can be detrimental to weight loss efforts and they leave less room for the consumption of nutrient-dense, whole foods that supply the body with nutrients that it needs. Treats can help to ease the transition to a Paleo lifestyle and it may be okay to enjoy them on an occasional basis. But if weight loss is your primary goal, you may want to consider how much of your diet is based on real food versus Paleo treats.
I tried to get pregnant for almost 10 years. It wasn’t until they finally referred me to a fertility specialist that anyone considered testing to see if my fallopian tubes were viable. Which they were not. Before I saw the fertility specialist, they tried to get me to ovulate by using Metformin. When that didn’t work, they tried Clomid. The Clomid made me so hormonal that my husband and I almost got divorced. Oh, it made me ovulate, but since no one had checked to see if my fallopian tubes were clear, it was fucking useless. The doctors instantly turned to pharmaceuticals to try and get me pregnant instead of looking at why I wasn’t getting pregnant. Thankfully, Dr. Zeringue at the Davis Fertility Clinic in Davis, California knows what he’s doing. Since my tubes were 100% filled with scar tissue, IVF was my only option. It worked the first time.

This is my fourth week on Paleo. I lost 11 pounds in the first three weeks and was so excited. I gained back 5 pounds this week. I feel so discouraged. I have to take into account that my period is coming. But 5 pounds! Praying it is water weight. I was so happy with this diet and I do feel so much better. I work out 1 hour a day for 5 days. I have one cheat day but only a dinner out with my boyfriend. The rest of the day I eat Paleo. I am sticking with the plan and just crossing my fingers that it is just hormonal. This is a long term thing so please let it work because I don’t really feel like I am dieting.
HI Chris, I am a total newbie to the Paleo Diet, but I have been doing a lot of research and I am also an avid follower of your writings and posts. I am confused….I’ve read many times where the Paleo Diet avoids dairy, yet you are a proponent of butter, milk, cream, cheese, etc. I would like to gain a better understanding of dairy’s place in the Paleo Diet and what it’s benefits are in consuming it as YOU propose, vs. the Paleo’s who say avoid it. Many thanks! Off to read more of your works…..and starting Paleo this week.
I have never been super overweight, but I have been carrying around an extra 10 lbs the last couple of years (I’m in my early 40s). Then this past summer I had a mastectomy and was a little depressed, and out of work for 8 weeks. I put on more weight and was very discouraged that my pants didn’t fit anymore. I tried a counting calorie diet with no results. I enjoy healthy foods and decided to try Paleo. After the first day, I went through my kitchen and got rid of non-Paleo foods and clarified my own butter. It’s been one week and I’m down 6 lbs! I was feeling run down on day 4, but I understand this is my body adjusting to the carb loss and every day I’m getting better. I love that I can eat a small, nutritious meal and I feel full, not bloated, and I do not get hungry two hours later. Before this diet, I only ate fish for meat, and I’m finding it hard to get more protein, so I think I may introduce chicken back in, but right now the thought of it grosses me out (It’s been 15 years since I ate it) so I’ll have to give it time. Also, I was a big wine drinker and decided I didn’t not want to give that up. I used to be able to drink a bottle and feel fine. Now though, I have two glasses and feel it. I will be most likely weaning off my “wine every evening” habit.
Great article, but could you please, oh please stop using photos of already thin, healthy, young and beautiful people for your articles on weight loss. That young woman looks like she’s never had a weight or health issue in her life. Please use real people.
The ketogenic diet focuses on manipulating the three macronutrients, which are fat, carbs and protein for those keeping score. The Paleo diet is more about the food choices. You eliminate dairy, grains and processed foods, but balance the macronutrients any way you want.
Most people who go on “low” carbohydrate diets complain of low energy and quit, not because such diets can’t work, but because they consume insufficient calories. A 1/2 cup of rice is 300 calories, whereas a 1/2 cup of spinach is 15 calories! Vegetables are not calorically dense, so it is critical that you add legumes for caloric load.

javi indy/ShutterstockIf you think of eating veggies and hitting the gym as unbearable hardships, then they will always feel that way and you’ll never do them. But if you can change your mindset to a more positive one, you can increase your chances of success. How? It’s as easy as swapping out one little word, according to Susan David, PhD, a psychologist at Harvard Medical School, co-founder of the Institute of Coaching at McLean Hospital, and CEO of Evidence Based Psychology. All it takes is reframing your thoughts from “I have to” to “I want to,” she told Business Insider. That expression puts you in the driver’s seat. It makes being healthy your choice, not your burden. Here’s how to develop a positive attitude in six easy steps.
Most of the testimonials reported that they lost about 10 pounds after a month. And the best part is, there was no need for any food plan or workout session. Garcinia Extra are also less commonly known as a pill that melts away fat and gives you a tight body.
Broccoli Egg Bake – This is like a quiche redefined, without any unnecessary ingredients, but plenty of flavor and nutrition. Broccoli is the poster child for healthy food, and supplies fiber to get your day off on the right foot and meet part of your daily fiber requirement. Eggs supply protein which powers you through till lunch.
The body perceives a sudden and drastic reduction in calorie intake as starvation and adjusts its metabolism accordingly. When humans used to hunt and gather food rather than buy it at a grocery store, a drastic cut in calories meant we would not eat for a while. Slowing down metabolic processes is the body’s way of protecting itself against long periods with little or no food. This energy saving feature is known as starvation mode.
If you begin using this somewhat unusual tip starting today you can literally expect to drop up to 3 dress sizes inside of a week, which I know may sound far-fetched to you like it did to all of these women that have done it using this tip, but I promise it’s not so just keep reading.
@einstein – Among paleo dieters, there are a lot of women that claim it the paleo diet is ineffective or causes weight gain. I suspect is because they might be making it look, taste, and feel too much like the standard american diet. Look at online forums and how many complaints there are from people seeking help. It does not look like a small percentage of people.
It is called the “low carb flu” and is usually over within a few days. For me it takes 3. Adding some sodium to your diet can help with this, such as dissolving a bouillon cube in a cup of hot water and drinking it.
Conversely, of course, if you’re not exercising at all, or doing just a little bit low impact exercise (walking – even really quickly ;), your body could just need a kick in the pants. Sometimes a bit of intense weight lifting, sprints, or some kind of high intensity interval training (CrossFit-type workouts) is just what your insulin levels and muscle fibers need to get things moving.
A second way to optimize nutrient partitioning is to manage inflammation. In the short term, inflammation is a perfectly normal immune response to injury. But when it goes on for too long, inflammation stops being beneficial and starts being downright dangerous. Chronic inflammation creates a hormonal environment that elevates hunger and impairs carbohydrate metabolism: it’s a recipe for overeating and then storing those calories as fats. To reduce inflammation…
