You might feel silly, but it works. When Alan R. Hirsch, MD, neurological director of the Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation in Chicago, tried this with 3,000 volunteers, he found that the more frequently people sniffed, the less hungry they were and the more weight they lost—an average of 30 pounds each. One theory is that sniffing the food tricks the brain into thinking you’re actually eating it. Use these other tricks to become a more mindful eater.

This is week 7 for me on the plan.. with a few minor cheats along the way. I am taking 70% less of my pain meds for arthritis, feel more energy and mental focus.. and losing a pound a week.. slow and steady. This plan is a keeper for me.

Vegetables and fruits are good sources of vitamins and minerals. Vegetables and fruits are also low in calories and rich in dietary fiber. Vegetables and fruits, like other plants or plant-based foods, contain substances that may help prevent cardiovascular disease. Eating more fruits and vegetables may help you cut on higher calorie foods, such as meat, cheese and snack foods.

I have not read it nor will I ever try to cut grains out of my diet. I like grains and they give me no problems. I’m not one to jump on every bandwagon that comes along just because it’s all the rage.

We are constantly brainwashed by pseudo-science and even the most intelligent of people can end up believing that the government guidelines are the healthiest way to be when they see the same messages consistently.

Water’s not the only metabolism booster in town. Studies have shown that drinking green tea can give your metabolism a tiny increase — which can add up to over 400 extra calories burned a week! Not only that, the beverage has got some major antioxidant power, so drink up.

“The Paleo Diet” suggests a similar approach and offers tips to sneak in exercise throughout the day (i.e., getting off the subway a stop early) while reminding you exercise can be fun – if you’re doing something you like.

Soft drinks, fruit juice, muffins, white rice and white bread are technically low in fat, for example, but the low-fat group was told to avoid those things and eat foods like brown rice, barley, steel-cut oats, lentils, lean meats, low-fat dairy products, quinoa, fresh fruit and legumes. The low-carb group was trained to choose nutritious foods like olive oil, salmon, avocados, hard cheeses, vegetables, nut butters, nuts and seeds, and grass-fed and pasture-raised animal foods.

The diet wasn’t developed by nutritionists or medical personnel and there is no gluten free option. Those who decide to try the three-day diet should consult with their medical professional before embarking on it.

I’ve finally hit phase three of the Metabolic Balance diet, which is not that different from phase two apart from now I have a bigger list of food to choose from. It’s like Christmas! I’m free to add oil, broccoli, asparagus and pork to my repertoire and I’m allowed one “cheat” meal once a week of whatever food I want. Seriously, it’s crazy how satisfying a tablespoon of oil can be.

I have been using the Paleo Lifestyle for last 9 months along with Crossfit and running. In that time I have lost and kept off 40 pounds. One of the biggest keys for me has been meal prep, every Sunday I set aside a few hours to get all my meals ready for the week. Having good food around me has help a lot and keeps me from making bad food decisions during my work day.

Advocates of the diet believe it can reduce the risk of modern health issues, pointing out that hunter-gathers did not face the same diseases that people today do, such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Regardless of whether or not grains should be vilified, I love this diet because I know it WORKS. I know people that have lost incredible amounts of weight and changed their lives within a matter of months.
