Sorry, but somebody had to say it. Even when following the Paleo diet, calories still count. The caveat, however, is that Paleo calories generally count less because they primarily come from whole, unprocessed foods. The reason for this is that whole foods require more energy to digest than their processed counterparts. Take, for example, a stalk of celery. By the time you chew, swallow, digest and absorb it, you’ve actually expended more calories than the celery contains, meaning that it’s actually providing negative calories! By comparison, a Twinkie requires almost no energy to chew, digest or absorb, but if you were going strictly by the listed caloric content, you would think that a calorie from a Twinkie is the same as a calorie from celery. In other words, a calorie is not a calorie. What Paleo folks have to keep an eye out for are the Paleo “loopholes,” Paleo foods that are technically allowed, but are still calorie dense and easy to eat. To be sure, Paleo treat foods made with sugar from dates, honey and maple syrup, and fat from coconut oil or other nuts are certainly better options than Twinkies and Ding Dongs, but they are still treats. Save them for special occasions to avoid overloading on healthy but excessive calories.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), and leaky gut are all gut health problems. They might not seem like they are important for weight loss, but they are some of the most important. Without a healthy gut, you cannot absorb nutrients well, or have a healthy hormonal response to food.

Switch to Lighter Alternatives. Whenever you can, use the low-fat versions of salad dressings, mayonnaise, dairy products, and other products. “You can trim calories effortlessly if you use low-fat and lighter products, and if the product is mixed in with other ingredients, no one will ever notice,” says Magee. More smart substitutions: Use salsa or hummus as a dip; spread sandwiches with mustard instead of mayo; eat plain roasted sweet potatoes instead of loaded white potatoes; use skim milk instead of cream in your coffee; hold the cheese on sandwiches; and use a little vinaigrette on your salad instead of piling on the creamy dressing.

You’re absolutely right, think about your statement and what the diet goal is. This diet is saying that you can lose between 10 and 17 lbs in 7 days, if it was that easy, everyone would do it. Not giving you grief, just answering in all honesty to help you out.

“When cardiologists see obese patients with coronary artery disease, we routinely recommend that they lose weight,” Dr. Bangalore says. “But the irony of that is that we know patients don’t just lose weight—they often gain it back quickly. We know this adds significant stress on the body, so we need to figure out how we can prevent that.”

If you eat your dinner restaurant style on your plate rather than family style, helping yourself from bowls and platters on the table, you’ll lose weight. Most of us tend to eat an average of 150 percent more calories in the evening than in the morning. You’ll avoid that now because when your plate is empty, you’re finished; there’s no reaching for seconds. Check out these other sneaky ways to get your family to eat better.

Weight Watchers – a plan that uses a point system to encourage followers to choose healthy, filling foods – claims you can shed up to 2 pounds a week. Our experts back its ability to deliver quick results. Better yet? Those results are likely to last, thanks to the program’s emphasis on a balanced diet with no restrictions, as well as its built-in support system. Why not prepare for next bikini season as well?

I understand that life is not just about food. But emotionally I would rather take some sort of nutrition pills and not eat at all. There is something very demoralizing and humiliating about forcing yourself to eat cardboard. Maybe this is just me with my history of eating disorders. I also cook a lot for others, and for me preparing delicious and healthy food is an act of love. Purposely making something to be tasteless would feel like an act of aggression (even if it was for myself). It’s unthinkable.

4. Whole grain is not recommended on this diet, due to high caloric content and generally high glycemic index. I challenge you to find one that is not “enriched” (it is bleached, then vitamins, etc. are added back in) or that doesn’t contain high fructose corn syrup in its first five ingredients (the ingredients of the “ingredients” listing on all food products are listed in descending order of quantity). It is tempting but not good for fat loss. True whole-grain bread is better than white bread and actually tastes pretty rough, but if you’re serious about fat-loss, I discourage consuming it. Saturdays allow you to go nuts, so be strict otherwise.

Yes, there are some people out there who can just “eat whatever they want” on Paleo and still magically lose weight. But those people and you may have appetite signals in your bodies (my own appetite is very demanding, and sometimes I have to have little sit down talks with it). Or your metabolisms may be different, or you may just be more genetically prone to having fat on your body than that other person. Whatever the case may be, the amount of food you eat – and I don’t care what other people say about calories and Paleo – will have a large effect on how… large… you are. I see it all the time.

  1. I’m now 18 and 175lbs. I lost 22lbs in 2 months. Although “unhealthy” all I did was walk. In school I walked up and down the stairs with my best friend and after school I walked around the track talking to her. We never ran or jogged (we are both to self-conscious), only walked.
Congrats on going Paleo! Don’t give up!! Going Paleo means making big changes and it just might take a while longer for your metabolism to catch on and catch up. That said, as the article points out, there could be many reasons you’re not losing weight. You could be eating too much or too little, exercising too much or too little. You could be stressed, not sleeping adequately or you could have a food sensitivities, digestive issues or hormonal issues. Here’s a more recent post on the subject, http://www.paleoplan.com/2015/07-07/14-tips-to-overcoming-weight-plateaus/.
no, paleo is not a high fat diet, this is not ketogenics which is dangerous for diabetics. Paleo is a high protein (high meaning your larger macro %) moderate fats, and picky carbs (carbs from plants, particularly with high fiber content). Sylina is correct about protein breaking down into glucose if there is too much of a surplus though.
In addition to that, women tend to do better with a few more carbs. Although initially it might be beneficial to cut down on carbohydrates to kick start the weight loss process, in the long term our hormones perform better with low-to-moderate carbohydrate intake. Hormonal imbalance is often the culprit of weight loss stalling. Going too low carb, under-eating and over-exercising (read more on those below) are often the contributing factors to hormonal chaos.
