Add a broth-based soup to your day and you’ll fill up on fewer calories. Think minestrone, tortilla soup, or Chinese won-ton. Soup’s especially handy at the beginning of a meal because it slows your eating and curbs your appetite. Start with a low-sodium broth or canned soup, add fresh or frozen vegetables and simmer. Beware of creamy soups, which can be high in fat and calories.
Like vegetables, fruits are fabulous weight-loss foods because they’re “big” foods, that is, foods that are bulked up by lots of fiber and water. With “big” foods, you’ll be eating a lot of food (which will satisfy your hunger) but not a lot of calories.
Every few months or so, a celebrity will make headlines by adopting a vegan diet and singing its praises. This is nothing new, and most of the time it isn’t really news, either. But when several world class athletes claim that going vegan has improved their game, increased their athleticism, and (drumroll) led to modest amounts of weight loss, the world takes notice.
I came across Tara Grant last fall when she was featured in Mark Sisson’s then-new book ‘The Primal Blueprint 21-Day Transformation’ She is featured as one of the success stories. I liked her look (I love retro fashion) and she’d experienced endometriosis, IVF and had twin boys. My story and hers were almost identical in many ways…except for the little matter of the fact she’s achieved a weight loss of 115lbs. And kept it off.
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and a healthy weight loss diet cannot be complete without the inclusion of breakfast in it. It has been seen that those who skip breakfast as a precaution to limit calorie intake actually end up consuming more calories towards the end of the day.
Staying Paleo while traveling is definitely a challenge. My answer to you is simple; you have to plan ahead and bring most your own food with you! Here are some ideas: hard boiled eggs, deli meat and veggie roll ups, fruit, nuts and seeds (these can always be found at airports), jerky, and individual packs of almond butter and coconut butter from Artisana. Bringing along a few squares of 85% dark chocolate can satisfy a craving for something sweet without overdoing the carbs. I hope this helps!
What is your sourcing on bullet No. 2? The Centers for Disease Control recommends exercise in the five-day range, and as a certified fitness trainer, it seems irresponsible to suggest that people can gain weight by exercising “too much” with no data source. What is your research to validate point No. 2 beyond your own experience?
There are many different ways to increase your movement throughout the day, and I outline several of them in my article about the dangers of sitting excessively. Getting into the habit of moving throughout the day can not only benefit your weight and promote fat loss, but it can also improve your overall health and reduce your risk for chronic disease.
Who was interviewed? Here’s a very partial list: tech icons (founders of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Craigslist, Pinterest, Spotify, Salesforce, Dropbox, and more), Jimmy Fallon, Arianna Huffington, Brandon Stanton (Humans of New York), Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Ben Stiller, Maurice Ashley (first African-American Grandmaster of chess), Brené Brown (researcher and bestselling author), Rick Rubin (legendary music producer), Temple Grandin (animal behavior expert and autism activist), Franklin Leonard (The Black List), Dara Torres (12-time Olympic medalist in swimming), David Lynch (director), Kelly Slater (surfing legend), Bozoma Saint John (Beats/Apple/Uber), Lewis Cantley (famed cancer researcher), Maria Sharapova, Chris Anderson (curator of TED), Terry Crews, Greg Norman (golf icon), Vitalik Buterin (creator of Ethereum), and nearly 100 more. This list is great but just an fun to those new or unfamiliar with Paleo, several of these recipes are not paleo. Rice, quinoa, brown vegetable oil and cheese are all ingredients that are not paleo. This list would be more aptly called Primal food plan. Delicious, yes, but paleo, no.
The good news is that you’ll find yourself craving your old junky favorites less as time goes on. But that first week can be notoriously tough as your body transitions to a cleaner way of eating. Now more than ever, make sure you’re eating regular, balanced meals and keeping approved snacks like plantain chips (Buy now: 3 bags for $9.90, amazon.com) with salsa and celery sticks with almond butter on hand. It’s always easier to say no to cookies or chips when you’re satisfied from eating something clean and delicious—or have another snack or dish to look forward to. (You’ll definitely look forward to one of these 7 Whole30-friendly meals you can make in your slow cooker.)
The Paleo Diet also almost completely eradicates sugar. Unless you’re getting your sugar from a fruit, forget it. Sugar causes an energy spike and crash in your system, turns to fat unless it’s used immediately, and wreaks all kind of havoc on our bodies.
