Whether you’re considering a Paleo diet to cut out processed foods, to eliminate certain food groups associated with your dietary intolerances, or to lose weight, there’s no denying that this caveman-inspired approach to eating is hugely popular.

Hey, I have a son that’s 11 years and is the same weight as you. It would be nice to chat with you and have my son chat to I will give you my email address email me some time and we can go from there. Would be nice to have a motivator for my son.

A low-stress lifestyle may keep belly fat away, suggests research published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology. For a year, researchers from the University of California at San Francisco followed 61 healthy women; 33 were chronically stressed while the other 28 were not. All were asked to keep a record of their consumption of high sugar, high fat foods. Researchers found that eating these unhealthy foods frequently predicted metabolic risk, including a larger waistline, more belly fat, higher oxidative damage, and more insulin resistance—but only in the high-stress group. Women in the low-stress group who also ate a lot of high fat, high sugar foods did not experience the same negative metabolic effects.

I used to have a great figure without trying. But then I graduated (no more mandatory physical education), and moved out (no more Mom making me eat healthy. Now I’m getting a little squishy and I want to get back to the way I was. Maybe about 20 lbs. I’d be happy to lose even 10 lbs.

yothin sanchai/Shutterstock”It’s easy to confuse thirst with hunger, leading to mindless snacking that never satiates,” says Ashley Pettit, certified holistic nutritionist, fitness chef, and personal trainer. To make sure you’re not confusing hydration for hunger, try to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. So if you weight 140 pounds, aim for 70 ounces of water over the course of the day, she advises. These flavor tricks make it easier to drink your fill.

I cannot classify myself as Paleo, yet. I am attempting the transition. Just a month ago I’d probably scoffed and said dumb idea to do the organic natural blah blah blah, everyone dies eventually and you only live once right? Well, I stumbled onto the Paleo while searching Low carb high fiber as I want to better myself due to diabetes and other things that run in my family like thyroid issues, obesity, and bowel problems. Knock on wood nothing for me yet at age 28. My cousin at 29 was just diagnosed with ulcerative colitis after a time of wondering wtf?! Oh snap! I’m getting off my tush and improving myself now! Along with my husband and 2 young daughters. My oldest age 5 has bouts of frequent constipation and acid reflux since birth, but eats a lot of veggies. Cheese is her problem. My husband had adhesions of the bowel as a baby, and gets severe blockages that land him in the hospital about every 4-5 yrs. me, I just have a problem with convenient foods and an office desk job ugh! I’m a legal drug lord for livestock (I joke) I sell medications for cattle. So for me to be Paleo and keep my job it sounds funny, but it’s just a job.

The Paleo Diet is also known by other names, such as the Paleolithic diet, the Stone Age diet or the caveman diet. There are actually slight variations among versions of the Paleo diet, so chances are you won’t find the same exact recommendations in every book or website talking about the diet. The basics of the Paleo diet, however, are always the same – and these are the things you need to learn about.

Fill your plate with vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains and add a little fish, white meat or dairy on the side. The Mediterranean diet derives from the idyllic countries surrounding the ocean which favours healthy fats and fresh produce.

The root of the problem is not willpower but neuroscience. Metabolic suppression is one of several powerful tools that the brain uses to keep the body within a certain weight range, called the set point. The range, which varies from person to person, is determined by genes and life experience. When dieters’ weight drops below it, they not only burn fewer calories but also produce more hunger-inducing hormones and find eating more rewarding.

Thought I’d let guys know, I started this diet on Monday and I’ve already lost close to 4lbs. I am 29 years old and I started this diet weighing in at 229, now I’m close to 225. I am very active, training for a muay thai kickboxing fight in Nov. where I have to be around 185 (my goal weight). It’s imperative to me that I do not lose muscle or cardiovascular strength during my weight reduction period.

if you can’t lose weight and you’re “watching” what you eat, the most obvious reason for your condition is that you’re reactive to certain foods. Either allergic or sensitive (two different things). If that’s your case, you have to learn how to identify those offenders and eliminate them from your diet. But you can be reactive to a lot of foods and develop further reactive response as you go. Most of your body fat is “false” fat, which is fluid.

Sure, we’ve all been told we should make sure to drink enough water, but it bears repeating—research shows it can be an effective weight-loss aid. In one Virginia Tech study, overweight people who followed a low-calorie diet and drank two eight-ounce glasses of water before every meal lost an average of 15.5 pounds over three months. People who reduced their calorie intake but didn’t down the H20 dropped just 11 pounds.

Gastric bypass surgery is a procedure that creates a small stomach pouch to restrict food intake and constructs bypasses of the duodenum and parts of the small intestine to decrease one’s ability to absorb nutrients from food. There are two types of gastric bypass operations: Roux-en-Y and extensive gastric bypass. Patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery will need to take nutrition supplements due to limited absorption of certain vitamins and minerals.

Fancy coffee drinks from trendy coffee joints often pack several hundred calories, thanks to whole milk, whipped cream, sugar, and sugary syrups. A cup of regular coffee with skim milk has just a small fraction of those calories. And when brewed with good beans, it tastes just as great. You can also try nonfat powdered milk in coffee. You’ll get the nutritional benefits of skim milk, which is high in calcium and low in calories. And, because the water has been removed, powdered milk doesn’t dilute the coffee the way skim milk does. Try these other calorie-free coffee hacks to wean off the bad stuff.

One of the best substitutes for coffee is the green tea. Caffeine in coffee is all that matters. You can have sugar free hot chocolate as it consists of small caffeine content. You can also resort to an energy drink like a red bull because of its moderate caffeine content.

In general, eating Paleo means eating veggies, fruits, meats, fish, certain fats, nuts, and seeds. It means removing grains (breads, pastas, rice, etc), beans, soy, dairy, certain vegetable oils, and refined sugar from your diet. But you probably want more details than that, right?

“Two quick ideas: 1. Don’t forget to keep healthy fats as a major constituent of the diet. Too often I see the “fear of/avoidance of fat” issue come into play. That fear/active avoidance of fat is a major cultural preconditioning bias that we all have to be aware of. I work with many people who understand, logically, that good fats are “good for you”, yet, in practice (and maybe even subconsciously) they avoid them come meal time. 2. Long/slow cardio is not the answer to fat loss! This is not to say that long/slow cardio can’t be part of an overall training plan (it most certainly can!), but it is to say that it cannot be the sole tool in the training modality toolbox. To drop bodyfat, a serious resistance training regimen has to be the cornerstone modality.”

“Well, first of all, we always try to talk people out of focusing on weight loss as a goal. It’s kind of like that notion that when you stop looking for Mr. or Mrs. Right, it is usually then that they enter into your life. We kind of experience the same thing with our clients at the gym: when they focus on a goal other than weight loss (a 200lb. deadlift, their first pull-up, stringing together double unders, getting at least 7 hours of sleep, reducing stress) we find that is when the magic usually happens and they tend to drop some inches! (We try not to focus much on the scale – Jason Seib and Dallas and Melissa Hartwig and Summer Innanen have some great posts on why using a scale as your measure of success might not be in your best interest). And even if the scale doesn’t change, very often we have people talking about how good they feel, how great they are sleeping, and so many other positive changes that the scale becomes secondary. Focusing on really smart food and lifestyle choices and NOT letting perfection get in the way of ‘really good’ usually seems to work well too. All that said, at the end of the day everyone’s baseline is a little bit different from another person’s… So it might take some experimenting and personal tailoring to really start to see the weight-loss changes some people strive for.”

Dmitry Polonskiy/ShutterstockTaking a hike through the mountains is certainly good exercise but you don’t have to break a sweat to take advantage of Mother Nature’s health package. Simply being outside in “green areas” has been linked to having a lower body weight, according to research done by the American Diabetes Association. And good news: The vast majority of Americans already live within walking distance of some type of park, so get out there and explore your neighborhood.

Maybe 124 isyour “natural” healthy weight? I am finding that I lose weight much more slowly on this diet, but also my whole body composition has changed to be more muscular , and muscle weighs more than fat. Also I find that I put on a little weight naturally in winter, and I think this is normal & healthy as we need more padding to keep us warm. I am 16lbs overweight but feel the healthiest I’ve ever felt & I’m in great shape. I will continue on this diet and focus on my strength & health & happiness, numbers don’t mean as much as we think.counting cals is not in keeping with the philosophy of paleo for me

Salsa is outstanding, especially chunky medium spice salsa with corn, beans, etc. I can’t stand egg whites by themselves, as it’s too boring even for me, but if you just add a few spoons of salsa on top, it’s a delicious little meal (just don’t put the salsa and lentils in the same bowl, as the mix is disgusting).

Monkey Business Images/ShutterstockEat-in kitchens are great for convenience but may be not so great for your waistline, according to a study published in Environment and Behavior. Researchers found that people who ate in open concept areas—like the kitchen/great room in most new homes today—ate more food than those who ate in a separate room. Being able to see the extra food and having such easy access to it encourages people to eat more, even if they’d already eaten until they were full. My daughter had been after me to follow a Paleo eating style for GI issues. After seeing positive results with her change in her eating style, I gave it a try. I lost 12 pounds in 4 months, it was easy. I didn’t change my eating style to lose weight, but it was an added benefit. The problem I have is that I live in a small rural area and to shop for organic foods/health food stores, I have to travel 2 hours. I do the best I can to shop for my eating style in my small community. Soon, the Farmers Market will start up and I also planted a garden. I started with eliminating my morning toast – I have not eaten breads or refined sugars at all, with the exception of an occasional glass of wine. I do not miss the breads or sugars. This will be my lifestyle, my gut feels much better. I just have to learn to portion my food better.

These days, when even instant cereal isn’t fast enough, we want weight loss now, not later. And who could argue with dropping the weight of a large laptop in just one long weekend? The 3 Day Diet promises exactly that.

Because apple cider vinegar stimulates digestion, it also reduces the amount of time that fats remains in the digestive tract. It’s important that your body gets a chance to remove key nutrients from your food, and conditions that contribute to diarrhea can be life-threatening.

Hey man I’m kinda new at this diet and it seems like you have a pretty good handle on how to apply it. I was wandering if I could get some contact information, so I can send you some of my questions. Just need some help getting my feet underneath me here.

Thanks for getting back with a reply. I am going to give the diet a shot, except maybe expand the list of veggies a bit for variety’s sake. I’ll start in two weeks when I finish school for good. It would be virtually impossible right now, as I routinely put in 80-100 hour weeks between grad school and work. I wish you absolutely the best in your quest to stay healthy!

Body composition can change as well. You can meet people who are super fit but weigh more than you could think possible. Would you rather be healthy, fit and weigh more, or weigh less with fewer composition results? Keep up the great work Debbie! Consistency is key!

The best way to give your body the balanced nutrition it needs is by eating a variety of nutrient-packed foods every day. Just be sure to stay within your calorie needs. For more information, check out www.mypyramid.gov.

This diet has been one of the best experiences of my life. I didn’t have to starve myself, I didn’t have to take any unhealthy diet pills, I didn’t have to work my butt off at the gym, and I didn’t have to eat bland boring food!

Many typical lunch foods—cold cuts, cured meats, pizza and soup—are high in sodium, so keep that in mind. You probably want to pack your own. These are a few delicious lunch ideas you’ll want to whip up:
