Wow, I have heard a lot about people cutting gluten and other foods to which they’re sensitive seeing weight loss. (My mom, for example… hmm.) The problem is I haven’t been eating a lot. In fact, for the past three years I’ve eaten a lot less than I did before. It doesn’t matter what I do, or how much I work out, nothing is shifting the weight. I’ve tried dieting, calorie counting, personal trainers, blood tests. Nothing has worked.

I had a thyroidectomy in Oct 2013. I’m 45 and was told that I had hosimotos an autoimmune disease then a few weeks later told I had Hurthel cell cancer. I agreed to have my thyroid removed and found out weeks later that it was no cancerous. Now I’m dealing with extreme fatigue and I’ve gained approx 20 lbs since October. I’m afraid to step on the scale to see for sure. I use to run 5 and 10 km races and also run 1/2 marathons. Now it takes everything for me to get energy to do anything I just want to sleep. The doctors are playing the lets adjust your medication game and it could take awhile before they find the right dosage. Without a thyroid I basically have no metabolism which makes it very hard to lose weight. I’m hoping by cutting out all the bad carbs and sugars from my diet it will help build up some sort of energy for me. A friend from work was talking about the Paleo diet so I decided to do some research. It looks like something I could do . I’m looking forward to picking up your book later today, cleaning out my cupboards/ fridge and starting my new journey. 30 days to a cleaner healthier me 🙂

Hi. Jeff and Kim here. We’ve lost 35 lbs each since Feb! We both have clothes in our closets that we can’t wear anymore…this time they’re too loose to fit! We did it by cleaning out the cupboards of anything that wasn’t on the approved list. Seriously. Then, we decided that we would only take advice and recipes from Jess and the paleo grubs website…6 months later it’s great to feel good and know that it’s from having a paleo lifestyle.

Katherine, you’ve missed the point. Chris’ and Einstein’s comments aren’t intended as stand-alone advice. They’re both assuming that hormonal factors are already being addressed by a Paleo style diet.

Paleo doesn’t always mean “just meat” its eating whole foods – vegetables, berries , nuts and meat. Actually, you should restrict the amount of meat you eat and focus more on eating healthy fats like olive oil, coconut oil and avocados. The whole “Meat Only” tag that has been attached to this diet is a misnomer. Wheat (specifically gluten) consumption is the main cause of weight gain in society today.

That’s why the Paleo approach to weight loss is different. Instead of just trying to starve your body into submission, the goal is to fix the underlying problems. It’s about working with your body, not working against it.
