What does your paleo diet look like? If it has been molded to look like cheese cake, tacos made out of bacon, pancakes made out of almond flour, yeah, guess what, you have made it too tasty and calorie-dense and you are probably not going to be dropping any weight, especially if weight loss is hard for you like it is for me. If it looks like voluminous salads, bone broths, reasonable servings of meats balanced with plenty of vegetables, and berries and no more than a handful of nuts per day and maybe a square of dark chocolate for a treat, and if you tolerate them, some PLAIN potatoes or sweet potatoes, then you have a fighting chance.

It is not that fat that can wreck your diet and makes you gain weight. It is the good fat that is essential for your health. Omega-3s, a good fat, is important for your mental and physical health. It protects your heart and brain. If you add the correct amount of fat in your diet, then you will get a reduced waistline.

So which habits should you change if you want to lose weight without a diet? I asked Dr. Wansink which habit changes are likely to provide the best results. I have been using the Paleo Lifestyle for last 9 months along with Crossfit and running. In that time I have lost and kept off 40 pounds. One of the biggest keys for me has been meal prep, every Sunday I set aside a few hours to get all my meals ready for the week. Having good food around me has help a lot and keeps me from making bad food decisions during my work day.

I have lost so far 13.5kgs or 30 pounds in just 7 weeks, the last few weeks I have been fasting all day long with a coffee or 2 in the morning to midday and eating quite a large dinner with 250 to 300 grams of fatty protein and a load of broccoli and cauliflower and some days I add peas to that or spinach.

Though I really thought I would have a difficult time adjusting to this new lifestyle. My daughters and myself have already a noticeable difference in our weight without feeling food deprived. I realized last night I haven’t been feeling achy or lethargic. My circulation feels so much better!

I am 54 and on my 2nd week of Paleo which I adopted to feel better and eat healthfully. I have struggled with losing 10 lbs for the past 6 years after trying EVERYTHING. 3 lbs would come off, 4 would go back on. I would find myself thinking about food all the time and sticking to a weight loss plan was suddenly so hard at this age. I’m not yet menopausal. Since going Paleo, I am never hungry anymore, have tons of energy, enjoy my food AND dropped 4 lbs. I can no longer imagine eating any other way. No breads, rice, pasta, potatoes, legumes, peanuts, refined sugars, bad oils, dairy, fake sugars. Lots of lean protein at every meal, variety of veggies, and occasional fruit. Nuts for snacking plus Chia seeds. I eat when I’m hungry and skip when I’m not. To lose more weight I will cut my portions a bit and start exercising. Also, I’ll try to move more throughout day. My biggest rave is that I’d forgotten how much I enjoy real food (as opposed to processed, fast, or prepared.) With so many vegetables to choose from, cooked or raw, and yummy protein options, every meal is a guilt free adventure. Lol.

I really need to change my eating habits the problem I won’t eat 95% of the food on this list. I don’t eat a lot of veggies and I don’t eat fish at all. I’m not sure there is a diet that would really work for me. This diet sounds like it helps with pain and inflammation which 8 have a lot of. Do you have any recommendations as to how I can find foods that I will eat that will help?

I don’t care how incorrect current measures are, its about consistency more than accuracy. Plug in your weight to a online calculator (or multiply lbs by 15 for a rough rule of thumb) for your maintenance level of calories and slash 500-1000 off of that to start losing (tweak the number to stablize fat loss at 1-2lbs a week for a healthy pace). Count everything that is consumed, every veggie, every snack.
