Hi Laura. The potential problem with reducing carbs and increasing healthy fats is the caloric increase. If you do really low carbs you’d go into ketosis and burn fat. But if you go for healthy fats while continuing with carbs, the insulin (that drives you blood sugar into your cells) will keep you from efficient fat-burning. So, one thought is that you’d want to consider either further carb restriction (to make you a better fat burner) or going a bit easier on your fats (to decrease overall calories until you reach that tipping point where you start to lose weight), IF you can do that and still feel satiety from your diet.

I have also modified the diet somewhat. For example I do not limit myself to the veggies that are recommended above… I eat a salad with oil and vinegar mainly. For my post workout meal I like to eat a peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread, and a chocolate chip cookie (so I do crave it later) or some fruit (I really feel that fruits are vital to good nutrition… and I happen to really love mangos)and cottage cheese (all small proportions).

Choose foods with less sodium and prepare foods with little or no salt. To lower blood pressure, aim to eat no more than 2,400 milligrams of sodium per day. Reducing daily intake to 1,500 mg is desirable because it can lower blood pressure even further. If you can’t meet these goals right now, even reducing sodium intake by 1,000 mg per day can benefit blood pressure.

Your total daily energy expenditure, or TDEE, is the number of calories you need daily to maintain your current weight. A health-care professional can accurately determine your TDEE with calculations based on your gender, age, weight, height and physical activity. According to Kansas State University, though, a quick estimate of your TDEE is 15 to 16 calories per pound of body weight. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should consume between 2,250 and 2,400 calories per day. Track the calories you eat on your paleo diet to ensure you’re eating within your TDEE range to prevent weight loss. If you notice your weight dropping, increase your caloric consumption by 100 per week until you quit losing weight; do the opposite if you notice the numbers on the scale increasing.

“The food is more rewarding and satisfying and it probably creates this reinforcing cycle—you eat and then you want to eat more,” St. Onge says. Add to that the reality that a tired brain is less able to control its impulses, and you can see that a well rested person is much better able to moderate his or her eating.

The scale is a nasty devil sometimes. While you may actually be losing fat, the scale may not show it because you’re simultaneously gaining muscle, leaning out, and getting some tone like you’ve always wanted it. I’m about to start paleo, but was wondering is there a way to go completely without anything nut and coconut based, and still make paleo fried chicken and such? So no almond flour or milk no coconut flour or milk.

Why 30 days? That’s the amount of time it takes for your body to reset and start the healing process, the authors say. It’s also enough time to change your tastes and improve your relationship with food, so you naturally begin to prefer whole foods to their highly processed counterparts. After the 30 days are up, you’re encouraged to slowly reintroduce off-limits foods to see what works for you and what doesn’t. (This is what happens to your body when you quit eating processed food.) 

A lot of people are in “fat denial,” says Irene Rubaum Keller, R.D. author of Foodaholic: The Seven Stages to Permanent Weight Loss. “They don’t get on scale, they buy stretchy clothes, they hide in the back of pictures—things that stop them from owning up to their weight.” Getting on the scale can stop the denial. “It may not help you lose weight, but may really stop you from gaining weight,” she says.

That’s funny! Seems to me it would be best to get advice from someone who has been successful at something rather than someone who has not succeeded! So logically, if you’re fat and don’t want to be… you should be getting advice from people who aren’t fat! The fatties won’t be able to help you, since they haven’t been able to help themselves.

can you make like stir-fry’s? the day you’re supposed to eat all those tomatoes and vegetables can I make like a spaghetti sauce and have it over baked spaghetti squash? or is it best to keep it to raw veggies?

Make sure you’re getting 8 hours a night (seriously) in a dark room with no noise. If you need to, wear ear plugs and/or an eye mask. Or sleep in a room where there’s no snoring spouse. If you don’t get enough sleep, you tax your adrenals and your cortisol levels can get out of whack, which can in turn inhibit weight loss, like I mentioned in the last point.

I have used this diet to get me “back on track” for the first week when I get “off track” with eating healthy and have found it useful for that purpose. It makes me laugh when I read things about this diet that say its bad because you will gain the weight back after you stop the diet and will have to repeat it. This is true of any diet in the world including “changing your eating habits as a lifestyle change”. Most people who make lifestyle changes have periods where they get off track (particularly during the holidays) and no matter what diet, change or lifestyle you choose, if you stop doing it you will gain the weight back. So if you’re looking for any diet that will make you lose weight and keep it off forever no matter what you do afterwards, it does not exist.

And good GRIEF stop trying to zero carb yourself into weight loss. I am exhausted reading about this. It is not going to work. It may for a while, then you will start to wonder what is wrong when it doesn’t work anymore and you feel awful. If you really want or need to do low carb, watch Phinney and Volek’s youtube video to be sure you haven’t missed all the important points in the book. A low carb diet should have plenty of vegetables, some low carb fruit, a little omega 3, some salted bone broth….unless you are living like, say, an Inuit eating the whole animal (yep, all of it, organs and all, some of it fermented too…) you should not be eating just meat and fat!
