Modern man faces many chronic diseases that didn’t plague them in prehistoric days, so hypothetically, eating the same way should improve your health. Time magazine reports that most nutritional experts think it’s a gross oversimplification:
1) This diet is one of the closest I’ve seen that gets close to a “change your lifestyle” approach versus a “reach your goal” diet. However, it still has components of a “reach your goal” diet, which is destined for eventual failure for most people as it doesn’t address the behaviors or emotional reasons for over-eating. Have you written, or do you provide in your books, a “bridge” type program where you move from this diet to one that instills healthier eating habits for life? For instance, I find gorging myself on Saturdays to be a temporary diet, not a habit one should indulge in for life.
People will say that it is all about greed. That is naive thinking. They have hidden agendas to destroy the populations health. The former is more palatable because people don’t want to confront the darkness and sociopaths who rule over them. They refuse to believe the powers that be would want to poison and kill them. The evidence is all over the place.
Congrats on going Paleo! Don’t give up!! Going Paleo means making big changes and it just might take a while longer for your metabolism to catch on and up. That said, as the article points out, there could be many reasons you’re not losing weight. You could be eating too much or too little, exercising too much or too little. You could be stressed, not sleeping adequately or you could have a food sensitivities, digestive issues or hormonal issues. I would argue that cutting processed food out of your diet is a smart move, though, no-matter-what, though. And training your body to burn fat as its primary nutrient source is also good. Cooking from whole foods is good. Avoiding severe blood glucose spikes is good. But just doing that is a way to get generally healthier, not necessarily a fool-proof weight-loss system.
Certain studies have observed that when you feel sleepy, you tend to eat more. This is because sleep deprivation can cause increased production of ghrelin in the body. Ghrelin is a hormone that stimulates appetite. Lack of sleep is also associated with changes in the hormone levels in the body, particularly insulin and cortisol. Inadequate sleep can lead to increased levels of insulin, thus making weight loss more difficult. Similarly, sleeping less can trigger cortisol production. Cortisol is a hormone which regulates sugar, protein, fat, mineral and water metabolism in the body. Physical or emotional stress can also cause cortisol to react by pumping up its levels. So it is advisable to have a good night’s sleep.
This is probably a dumb question, but is it okay to have a bit of butter with the vegetables, or are they best eaten dry? Also, I do see the logic of keeping things simple. On the other hand, I usually have a nice garden every summer, so I tend to have a variety of veggies on hand.
I was having issues losing weight last year even though I thought I was being really good with my diet and avoided gluten, and dairy for example and mainly eating paleo. It was frustrating because I was feeling very inflamed. Anyways… I had an appointment with my doctor who ran some tests and retested me for food sensitivities.
Unfortunately, this advice rarely works because the brain has powerful mechanisms for overriding our efforts to lose weight. If you consciously reduce the number of calories you eat, your body responds by lowering your metabolism to match your reduced intake. So as you purposefully eat less calories, your body finds ways to use less calories. All while ramping up hormones that raise your appetite and drive you to eat more at every meal to regain the fat you’ve lost.
I am not sure how to proceed. I have a lot of weight to lose and I need to get started asap! I want to make paleo work for me…..I don’t see any other way of eating that would be sustainable for life other than eating paleo. The only thing I can think of to try is to reduce my fat and up my protein. I don’t want to be hungry all the time and I don’t know what else to do. This is so frustrating. Mentally I feel great but I have GOT to lose this weight.
Any weight loss program must be able to diagnose and address what is broken internally. Limited exercise can be an adjunct to this if they diagnose and treat correctly. The problem with most weight loss programs is that they can’t diagnose what is wrong internally. Most ignore the tainted food supply and have people stupidly focus on calories. The more healthier people will have success. The less healthy won’t.

The answer to your question is really subjective on you, your lifestyle, etc. I’m not trying to give a dodgy answer, but it’s really more trial and error than anything else. I’d like a simpler answer, but I’ve found that it really varies from one person to another.
