These are important points, Chris. Thank you. I think that weight loss is an area that has been under dealt with in paleo. Certainly any obese person going from SAD to Paleo will probably lose quite a bit of weight, but the rest of us who have been trying to eat right for a long time already may have trouble getting down to their ideal weight on Paleo (especially women, I would guess). This is something I’ve been working on myself for the past couple of years. I struggle around a BMI of 21, when I feel so much better and healthier at 19 (still fatter than the average Kitavan woman, lol!). I have also recently discovered your number one “Keep your food simple” rule. I have a theory about this. Food clearly serves both physiological and social purposes. Fancy dishes (usually calorically very dense) are reserved to special occasions in traditional societies (potlatches and other types of special feasting occasions). In the modern world where we are used to having anything we want, we have gotten used to having feast day be every day.
You said it so well! At first, it seems difficult because you have to retrain yourself to new rules. But after 3 weeks on Paleo, or clean eating, things got better for me. I am hardly ever hungry. Because it is healthy to walk, I log 10,000 steps a day. And I can do that because of increased energy on the Paleo way!!

Do this long enough, and eventually your brain will assume you’re starving (because to some extent, you are). At that point, it will trigger biological responses that tell your fat cells to start storing whatever calories they can get their hands on, which is exactly what you’re trying to prevent in the first place.

The Paleo diet is working amazingly for me. I have been on it for just under 3weeks and lost 13kgs or 28lbs. I feel fantastic, I have been very strict though, and stuck to only the wholesome foods. 3 weeks ago I weighed in at 152kgs/335lbs, now i’m down to 139kgs/306lbs. Paleo is changing my life. Infact I don’t think I am doing the Paleo diet anymore… I am simply a Paleo!
Get plenty of sleep. Lack of sleep stimulates your appetite so you want more food than normal; at the same time, it stops you feeling satisfied, making you want to keep eating. Sleep deprivation can also affect your motivation, so aim for eight hours of quality sleep a night.
To get the equal number of calories from a bag of Doritos or bread (which, as you know, you can eat all day long and never really feel full), you’d have to eat 2-3 Mack trucks full of broccoli and spinach.
Try changing things up a bit by making sure you’re eating enough protein throughout the day. For instance, drinking only bulletproof coffee in the morning may not be stimulating your metabolism enough. You may find you need to make other changes as well. Look closely at the rest of the meals your eating and make sure all three macronutrients protein, carbs and healthy fats are adequate. “What we really want to focus on is losing ‘fat’ not necessarily ‘weight’ because weight can mean muscle mass too which is not good and losing fat should be the focus – which means not an overnight fix. Losing fat in a healthy manner means you have to get healthy first! The best way to do this is to make sure that you first and foremost eating clean of course and eating enough! Believe it or not, most people, women especially are depriving themselves of calories during the day and/or often binging at night which is very stressful on the body and does not allow you to lose that stubborn body fat.Second, you have to make sure your other lifestyle components are dialed meaning sleep at least 8 hours a night, focus on management such as make sure everyday you are meditating for around 10 minutes, and finally you must exercise smart. Too much exercise is too stressful on the body and again, you’ll hold on to that body fat because your body will not be happy with what your forcing it to do every single day. You must find a happy medium of lifting heavy weights two to three times a week, throw in some sprints here and there, and walk as much as possible. Most importantly always remember you need to become healthy by choice and then you’ll end up hot by accident!”
I sleep with ear plugs in every night. I don’t know what I’m going to do if I have a kid and I need to hear him/her crying at night… I can’t sleep without them at this point. I’m an anxious, sometimes hyper-vigilant type of person, and if I hear the house creak at night I immediately think it’s a rapist coming into my room. I’m only sort of kidding. So earplugs changed my sleep forever by making all those noises go away. I can sleep through most things now, and I can’t recommend it highly enough for people like me.
Well done on the weight loss. You are 14 and you weight now about 152 pounds. That is not at all bad and it may be better just to keep it at that whilst you continue to grow. My teens (14) lost some weight and my view has been it is best to let it stabilise, change the foods you eat for life to a healthy diet with no junk food and as you grow taller and exercise any existing excess weight will disappear naturally.
Katrina, you could have been me posting this! I agree 100% with you. I also was a vegetarian, even trying veganism for a short time and teach at a public school. I eat one starchy vegetable per day, love the vegetable choices, and eat about four ounces of protein three times per day. I have lost weight, have much more energy, my inflammation issues are gone as are depression and anxiety for the most part. I also rarely get sick! This is the first lifestyle change I have made where I no longer experience cravings for junk. It is very exciting and a huge relief. If, for some reason, the only food available is something I am not willing to eat, I can refrain from eating without feeling faint. My anemia and ovarian cysts have diminished. You are right, also, that Paleo can be expensive if you let it. We just do the best we can and eat seasonally. Certain months we have more money and stock up on grass-fed foods. We are able to go hunting, crabbing, and fishing where we live. We can grow our own food. We have farmer’s markets and farm shares we can purchase. I used to work at a grocery store and was honestly repulsed by what people bought to feed their families. Even prior to going Paleo, my family ate whole foods for the most part. These poor kids have to try to learn while trying to live off of factory-made, processed, junk. I work at a lower-income school and many of the students have bags of hot fried cheese curls (not sure if we can mention brand names) for breakfast and/or snack plus a sugary drink. The school does not allow candy but it wouldn’t be any worse! I try to teach lessons that revolve around healthy lifestyles and good food choices but these children don’t have much of a choice in what their parents have available.
I have a bananas and or a apple once a day. I get by having dark chocolate at night (for my sugar crave and feel I’m being naughty). Try potatoes par boiled in water, then fried in pan with olive oil with cumin seeds and tumeric to go along with a steak. Mix it up a little. I find Paleo hard as I am always craving bread, pasta and dairy. But I am shrink far more than I have ever with any other diet. I have lost 12kgs over a year period, with absolutely no excerise. I am now at the point where I probably need to excerise to tone up. I have a further 25kgs to go. Those that are gaining weight you are eating something your body doesn’t like. Try changing what your eating and see.
Heart-healthy diet tip: Almonds rank low on the glycemic index (they don’t spike blood sugar levels, which can lead to cravings). And they’re so filling that a handful can keep you full till your next meal.
I also wanted to mention that you can buy eggs made by hens that were fed feeds high in Omega3 fatty acids. These things are passed down into the eggs the hens lay. It is a good (and relatively inexpensive) way to get additional omega3s into your diet.

You figured you were on an easy peasy downhill ride to your optimal size. So you kept doing what you did the first week, but after the 2nd or 3rd week, the weight stopped coming off. And now you’re stuck right where you were at week 3. Maybe you’ve even gained some weight.
At the table, sip water frequently. Intersperse your eating with stories for your dining partner of the amusing things that happened during your day. Your brain lags your stomach by about 20 minutes when it comes to satiety (fullness) signals. If you eat slowly enough, your brain will catch up to tell you that you are no longer in need of food. I think intermittent fasting is a great strategy with good science behind it, but many individuals who find it and look to it as a strategy, are often already in a state of adrenal fatigue. Cortisol helps to boost blood sugar during fasting states (most notably overnight)…so if you go for long periods of fasting while also being adrenal fatigued, you can exacerbate the cortisol issues. So I’m careful to address adrenals first before turning to IF.
It’s also worth noting that very few studies on the paleo diet compare its effects on weight loss to other diets’ effects on weight loss. While studies suggest that the paleo diet is superior, comparing it to more diets would strengthen this argument.
