Also, someone who is extremely overweight/highly metabolically resistant might still not lose weight on a high-protein/moderate fat/slow carb diet. The reason being that protein can be converted to glucose (from what I understand). Fat however, cannot. Your body can burn fat directly. This is why some diets (like atkins) stress lots of fat in the beginning. You don’t want to be eating lots of lard, though. 🙂 When your body no longer has any glucose left (this can take from two to six days because your muscles store a form of sugar for energy called glycogen), it will switch to fat burning mode full time. This may very likely be unpleasant at first, but you get used to it, and its temporary to fix your body’s insulin resistance. Contrary to some folks’ opinion (probably all carb addicts by the way), this state (ketosis) is not dangerous to a healthy individual. They mix up ketosis with a dangerous state caused by kidney failure called ketoacidosis. Not the same thing. Also, there has been no record of a low carb, high protein diet causing kidney failure in a previously healthy individual, ever.

Yes, there are some people out there who can just “eat whatever they want” on Paleo and still magically lose weight. I weigh 114 and 5’2 and im trying to burn 13 pounds in a month, is it possible? and how many calories should i cut off per day, is it still possible if i only exercise every other day? and im simultaneously doing other things to help such as sweating it all out or staying in a room that’s 17 degrees celsius
Katrina, you could have been me posting this! I agree 100% with you. I also was a vegetarian, even trying veganism for a short time and teach at a public school. I eat one starchy vegetable per day, love the vegetable choices, and eat about four ounces of protein three times per day. I have lost weight, have much more energy, my inflammation issues are gone as are depression and anxiety for the most part. I also rarely get sick! This is the first lifestyle change I have made where I no longer experience cravings for junk. It is very exciting and a huge relief. If, for some reason, the only food available is something I am not willing to eat, I can refrain from eating without feeling faint. My anemia and ovarian cysts have diminished. You are right, also, that Paleo can be expensive if you let it. We just do the best we can and eat seasonally. Certain months we have more money and stock up on grass-fed foods. We are able to go hunting, crabbing, and fishing where we live. We can grow our own food. We have farmer’s markets and farm shares we can purchase. I used to work at a grocery store and was honestly repulsed by what people bought to feed their families. Even prior to Paleo, my family ate whole foods for the most part. These poor kids have to try to learn while trying to live off of factory-made, processed, junk. I work at a lower-income school and many of the students have bags of hot fried cheese curls (not sure if we can mention brand names) for breakfast and/or snack plus a sugary drink. The school does not allow candy but it wouldn’t be any worse! I try to teach lessons that revolve around healthy lifestyles and good food choices but these children don’t have much of a choice in what their parents have available.

you drop weight really quick with this diet due to water loss in the first week. Carbohydrates are stored as glycogen in the liver. An easy way to think about it is glycogen ‘holds’ water. So, if you eat fewer carbs, you store fewer carbs as glycogen and your body ‘holds’ less water. Which means…you’ll lose a lot of weight the first few days and then it levels out to a lb or 2 a week (more if you’re more disciplined and have a good fitness plan or have an easy body type for losing weight). don’t lose more 3 or 4 a week at that level chances are you’re dropping muscle.
Since the Paleo diet doesn’t require calorie counting or the measuring of portions, you can basically eat as much as you want as long as you stick to the approved foods. The other exciting breakthrough this week was, for the first time in years, I finally felt light enough, and fit enough, to jog a little bit. I was walking home. Like vegetables, fruits are fabulous weight-loss foods because they’re “big” foods, that is, foods that are bulked up by lots of fiber and water. With “big” foods, you’ll be eating a lot of food (which will satisfy your hunger) but not a lot of calories.
So I’m currently losing following more traditional techniques of weight loss (with weekly success) and plan to switch to a more paleo diet once I reached my target weight as I do believe in the health principals of this way of eating.
