The Paleo diet should be founded on the basis of real food, instead of the re-embodiment of certain baked foods from the usual American Diet. In our culture today, many sweets have emerged which now give rise to this Paleo-world that is teeming with tasty dessert recipes. Though these foods are composed with Paleo ingredients, they however are not good health-wise and isn’t useful to weight loss*. Ingredients such as energy-dense nut flours and natural sugars are unfavorable to an individual’s weight loss* effort.

Case in point: my wife has a nutrition and weight loss clinic. Completely natural, with its basis in a grain-free, sugar-free, low carb diet (thank you Davis and Perlmutter). Not freaky low carb, just smart. Everyone, and I mean everyone, loses weight and keeps it off. Everyone feels better. This isn’t “most” of her clientele, this is 100%.

Thank you so much for this article. I truly believe that messages come to me when I most need them. I was feeling particularly down today about my results since going Paleo several months ago. What hit me most was what you said about exercising too much (and about eating 1,000 calories of cashews in a day — glad I am not alone!). As a six day a week exerciser I’m not sure I can go down to 3 days a week, but I will experiment for the next 30 days cutting down my workouts to 4x a week. Now, what to do with all that free time?

Yeah, I’ve found that by following a few simple overall strategies one doesn’t have to be paranoid about the details like counting calories everyday. It’s not like our ancestors would or could have tracked their calories, or would have even known what a calorie was.

If you need to remind yourself to stand tall, a few strategically-placed sticky notes should do the trick.

This is good advice. I generally follow the 80/20 rule. Be good Monday through Friday, but allow myself a little indulgence on Saturday/Sunday. I don’t hold myself hostage to weight loss; it’s happening, just slower. But more importantly, most of the time I’m good food for good health.

I had the same problem when I started paleo but I did notice how my clothes were fitting and by comments from others about how much weight I’ve lost, so maybe don’t focus on the numbers on the scale go by measurements and clothes.

Systolic and diastolic are the two readings in which blood pressure is measured. The American College of Cardiology released new guidelines for high blood pressure in 2017. The guidelines now state that blood normal blood pressure is 120/80 mmHg. If either one of those numbers is higher, you have high blood pressure.

Remember: anything is better than nothing. Start off slowly with small amounts of physical activity each day. Then, as you start to lose weight and have more energy, you’ll find it easier to become more physically active.

Since we are talking about setting a meal plan, we need to talk about how many calories you should plan to eat. If your goal is to lose weight, all you need to know is your goal weight. The equation is easy; add a zero to the end of your goal weight to find your daily calorie goal. Just be sure not to go under 1200 calories per day as this will send your metabolism into preservation mode, which may cause your body to hold onto weight instead of releasing it.

On Saturday I ate my typical breakfast of 4 egg whites, 2 whole eggs, and 6-8oz cooked baby spinach. 2.5 hours later I drove through Taco Johns and ordered a grilled burrito, small potato ole’s, and a small Mountain Dew. (I actually had a hard time finishing it whereas this would have almost been an appetizer before). 3 hours later I ate mixed fruit and some veggies and dip (cocktails), and finally ate chicken breast, dinner rolls, and a few M&Ms at the end of the evening. I will also note that all day I drank about a gallon of water or more.

I am just starting Paleo. I have Reheumatoid Arthritis. Have had it for 15 years. I am not on any perscription meds as all my doctor wanted me on was the hard meds and I refuse to use them. I been controlling it with diet and over the counter meds for pain. I am trying Paleo because I read about the autoImmune Paleo diet and was very interested to see if it will help me. Would really like to put my RA in remission. I have just started a water aerobics class to get my exercise and help me with pain. I will also be riding my stationary bike twice a week along with the 2 day a week water class. I am not a big meat eater, but I love veggies and I pretty good at making simple meals (my favorite). There are many different ways to increase your movement throughout the day, and I outline several of them in my article about the dangers of sitting excessively. Getting into the habit of moving throughout the day can not only benefit your weight and promote fat loss, but it can also improve your overall health and reduce your risk for chronic disease.

If you’re a coffee, green/black tea, decaf, etc drinker, consider giving caffeine up to see if it improves your situation. Since caffeine is a stimulant, it affects your adrenals and therefore your cortisol levels (and thyroid and sex hormones, and on and on), and again, messing with your cortisol can inhibit weight loss. Caffeine can also affect your sleep, even if you only have one cup a day. And not getting enough sleep, well, I already went over that in point 3.

I see a lot of your diets here, unfortunately most of you will experience the same problem, once your body gets used to the diet plan you are on, it will stop burning fat, so if you can work out 2 meal plans stretching over 2 weeks each, one that you are on now (consisting of beans ect.) and then a stricter one that you have to also cut the following food out, NO beans, corn, Patatoes, any high sugar fruits (best to eat is watermelons, grapefruits ect, NO bananas, apples, grapes ect).

In a study by Cornell researcher Brain Wansink, Ph.D., people who went to a fast food restaurant where the lighting was softer and the music was more soothing ate, on average, 175 fewer calories than those who ate in the same place with bright lights and blaring music.

Ultimately, however good our diet is, if we’re thinking too much about what we eat, we’re probably eating more than we need. The times when I feel the thinnest and healthiest are when I’m enjoying life and passionately involved in my projects. The old saying “Eat to live, not live to eat,” is really wise. People (including me at times) who spend all day planning healthy meals and grocery shopping, etc., are probably using this behavior at least partly to escape from life. And when you’re not really living, what else is there to do besides eat (and maybe spend too much time posting on blogs, lol)? For me, reducing food reward down to nothing is only an excuse to further retreat from life. Look at photos of both Guyenet and Sisson. Who do you think has a richer, more passionate existence? Simple food, YES. Purposely tasteless food, NO. Don’t do it.

Don’t ban any foods from your weight loss plan, especially the ones you like. Banning foods will only make you crave them more. There’s no reason you can’t enjoy the occasional treat as long as you stay within your daily calorie allowance.

  1. Don’t get me wrong — exercising at any time is good for you. But evening activity may be particularly beneficial because many people’s metabolism slows down toward the end of the day. Thirty minutes of aerobic activity before dinner increases your metabolic rate and may keep it elevated for another two or three hours, even after you’ve stopped moving. What that means for you: You’re less likely to go back for seconds or thirds. Plus, it’ll help you relax post meal so you won’t be tempted by stress-induced grazing that can rack up calories, quickly.
    Darryl – This advice is on an individual basis, as everyone has their own threshold for how much exercise they can do without overtraining (and therefore potentially gaining weight, among other things). I don’t really care what a research paper has to say about that, since it seems to me like it’s common sense. You may be able to train hard 6 days a week and be fine. Another person may only be able to train moderately 2 times a week, depending on their health status. Everyone needs to find their own threshold. That is not irresponsible advice, in my opinion. Do you disagree?
