Apples are a great source of potassium, and likewise, apple cider vinegar, taken on a regular basis, will contribute the potassium you need to help balance the sodium in your diet. In fact, try replacing salt in your diet with apple cider vinegar. Use it to top foods you might be tempted to salt, such as vegetables or protein foods. A little vinegar over a plate of beans is a regional favorite in many parts of America.
We all have autoimmune issues with our skin and digestive tracts, so being flexible with the paleo diet really isn’t an option, unless we all want to be sick. We eat rice daily and dairy and corn on occasion, but we stick to a very strict no wheat policy and no nightshades. The kids are too young to understand that they can’t eat certain things, so things like birthday parties and celebrations at their daycare haven’t really been an option. As they get older, we’ll tell them that certain foods are going to cause a reaction in them and leave it up to them to decide, but we won’t have those foods in the house. We also don’t eat out at restaurants at all. It’s incredibly difficult not having the luxury of just ordering pizza on nights when I’m exhausted, but we feel so much better having gluten-free pizza that we make ourselves once every couple of months and it becomes a celebration for us.
Thanks for posting! I was feeling a little insane because I kept hearing how people just lost tons of weight really fast on paleo and its been a very slow process for me. I have been happier to find that is not the case for everyone. I’m in fully to this eating about 6 weeks now and its been slow going. But I’m lifting heavy weights a couple times a week and getting stronger each time, so I know the scale is not always going to go down since I’m gaining muscle. But its sometimes hard when the media (like big name TV shows) only care about how far the scale has gone down.
We are delighted to receive your comment and a BIG CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU!!! You are absolutely right on track with your realization that Paleo is more than a diet, it is a “lifestyle.” It’s been a few days since you left this comment, how are you doing? Just a heads up that the first month of Paleo is quite challenging for most people, as they break-free from addictive foods and go through “The Dreaded Detox.” Most people get past this after 4-6 weeks on the’diet.’ With regards to nuts, the general consensus is ‘a small handful a day’ doesn’t seem to cause most people any issues. Fruit is a different story. Fruits are almost entirely made up of carbohydrate, with some fruits containing more carbs (i.e. bananas) than others (i.e. granny smith apples). In general, minimizing fruits (and carbs in general) will expedite weight loss. Also, if you can save your carbs/fruit till later in the day, they will have less of a ‘roller-coaster’ effect on your blood sugar throughout the day. Dried fruit and fruit juice are some of the highest-carb foods out there, and for this reason I personally avoid them. Having said all that, everyone is unique with regards to how many carbs their bodies are optimized with, and it does take some trial and error at first to figure out what will work best for you.
Research has linked snacking on nuts with having a lower waist circumference. Nuts are rich in monounsaturated fats, making them a more satisfying pick than pretzels. Make sure you stick to the unsalted versions to stave off sodium-induced puff, and keep in mind one serving is about a small handful.
I don’t know how many of the situations above apply to you, but this is what comes to mind when I hear that people are having trouble losing weight. I have a feeling you’ll have some success if you start experimenting with these things. If you don’t, then I’d strongly suggest going to see a Paleo friendly naturopathic doctor, or “Naturopath”. You can find one in your area on www.primaldocs.com. They’ll do some testing to figure out what’s going on. Who knows – maybe you have yeast overgrowth or a parasite that’s causing weird stuff to happen to your immune and digestive systems. Maybe your thyroid is out of whack and you need to take herbal and nutrient supplements for a while (like me). Maybe your sex hormones are out of balance and need some nutrient support, or even bioidentical hormone replacement. It could be a lot of things, all of which could affect weight loss.
Americans use their cars for two-thirds of all trips that are less than 1 mile and 89% of all trips that are 1 to 2 miles, yet each additional hour you spend driving is associated with a 6% increase in obesity. Burn calories instead of gas by following this rule: your errands are less than 1 mile away, vow to walk them at a brisk pace instead of driving. Or park where you can run several errands within a mile instead of moving your car each time. Walk every day and you’ll be 13 to 17 pounds lighter next year.
Hi- My brother competed in the Ford Iron Man in Hawaii this past October. He did this after going from 400lbs to 230lbs with diet and intense exercise. He is having a hard time though keeping the weight off even though he is consistently competing in marathons, triathlons etc… Would this diet be okay for him with how much he competes?
Jonathan Bailor didn’t try to refute the observation that we’re eating more. What he said was that given that we know we’re eating more, the calorie ‘math’ would lead us to expect to be much more overweight than we are. He’s not saying we’re not eating more, but that the simplistic treatment of calories leads to the wrong predictions.
This can be true for some people, but others are just completely sensitive to sugar and need to avoid all forms. Bioindividuality is an amazing thing! I personally didn’t lose weight OR gain energy and health until I quit all forms of sugar, but some do fine with limited amounts. It’s all about knowing your own body.

I am a mother of 2 and breastfed both my kids and I can understand how frustrating it is to face yourself in the mirror each day. But you have to remember that your priority right now is your baby’s health, your baby needs all the nutrients that he/she needs in order to be healthy and strong. You can worry about losing the fat later by eating healthy food and exercise. If you still want to lose weight now, why not do it gradually, start by eating small portions and more frequent like every 2 hours with healthy snacks like fruits, veggies. Yoga also helps in toning your body.
