I think that’s a good ethical question. Funding research is expensive. If Coke or anyone wants to contribute to unbiased research, then I don’t want to stop them. I don’t think that’s inherently a bad thing. Obviously there is a conflict of interest, and I don’t think it’s an accident that Coke seems to be targeting people who have been doing physical activity work their entire careers and not people who have been doing eating and diet work. I am not arguing that exercise isn’t important but it strikes me as a bit suspect. No respectable researcher would be part of an enterprise that hides results that do not support the Coke message, and some of these researchers are well known and quite reputable so I do not think that is on the table.

I’ve been doing very well, but still feel the whole thing is very “loose”/informal. I’m not viewing this as a diet, but as a lifestyle- but I’d still like to have some order in my life and actually know which paleo foods I can and can’t be eating to start with. For example, I read nuts and some fruits were okay, but after consuming three granny smiths over the past week and several handfulls of nuts (cashews and almonds), I read it’s ideally best to leave these things (nuts and fruits) out for the first bit of the diet. Moderation is something I never knew in my previous life so restraining myself to just a few nuts is hard so it’s for that reason I’m thinking to cut them out altogether- with me it’s all or nothing.

  1. Gosh, there are many wonderful insights here. But perhaps a little bit of biochemistry MAY clarify. Chris talks about using Paleo for weight loss. Most ‘diets’ are for weight/fat loss and the use of the word ‘diet’ means so much more than fat-loss for eg. getting-healthier thru better food choices;. Excess fat (obesity) is only one (of several) indicators that something is wrong here and we say its our food. In Paleo-times people were without any way to preserve food for extended periods of time and their method of transport meant that food variety (beyond wild-foraged) was limited. So the present-use of the word ‘Paleo’ is-a-tongue-in-cheek-bow-to-what-our-ancestors-actually did eat.
    #6 “The Paleo Diet is too restrictive and I can’t live like this.” This is the most valid criticism I personally have of the diet, as the best diet plan is the one you actually stick with and follow through on! The goal shouldn’t be to go “full paleo” for a few weeks only to go back to how you were eating before.
    Plan and prep meals and snacks in advance: This diet can be hard to follow if you’re on the go or only have time for a quick bite. Having a Paleo-friendly meals and snacks at the ready will help you stick with it.
    For example, a cross-sectional study of more than 70,000 people published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2013 found that vegans had, on average, the lowest BMI of people with different dietary habits (ranging from non-vegetarian to vegan), even though everyone ate the same amount of daily calories. And a meta-analysis published in the journal Nutrients in 2014 looked at over 100,000 study participants and found that vegan diets are linked to a lower risk of developing obesity (as well as hypertension, type-2 diabetes, and heart disease). Another meta-analysis published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine in 2015 discovered that people on a vegetarian diet—especially those on a vegan diet—saw better weight-loss results than dieters on other eating plans. Of the more than 1,000 people who followed a specific diet for nine to 74 weeks, vegans on average lost about 5.5 more pounds than non-vegetarian dieters (vegetarians lost about three pounds more than those on a diet that included meat). Still, it’s important to remember that there are so many factors at play when it comes to a person’s weight and health, so you shouldn’t take these findings to mean that adopting a vegan diet will absolutely lead to weight loss.
