Katrina, you could have been me posting this! I agree 100% with you. I also was a vegetarian, even trying veganism for a short time and teach at a public school. I eat one starchy vegetable per day, love the vegetable choices, and eat about four ounces of protein three times per day. I have lost weight, have much more energy, my inflammation issues are gone as are depression and anxiety for the most part. I also rarely get sick! This is the first lifestyle change I have made where I no longer experience cravings for junk. It is very exciting and a huge relief. If, for some reason, the only food available is something I am not willing to eat, I can refrain from eating without feeling faint. My anemia and ovarian cysts have diminished. You are right, also, that Paleo can be expensive if you let it. We just do the best we can and eat seasonally. Certain months we have more money and stock up on grass-fed foods. We are able to go hunting, crabbing, and fishing where we live. We can grow our own food. We have farmer’s markets and farm shares we can purchase. I used to work at a grocery store and was honestly repulsed by what people bought to feed their families. Even prior to going Paleo, my family ate whole foods for the most part. These poor kids have to try to learn while trying to live off of factory-made, processed, junk. I work at a lower-income school and many of the students have bags of hot fried cheese curls (not sure if we can mention brand names) for breakfast and/or snack plus a sugary drink. The school does not allow candy but it wouldn’t be any worse! I try to teach lessons that revolve around healthy lifestyles and good food choices but these children don’t have much of a choice in what their parents have available.

So, less carbs = less glucose in your system, which means your body will have to start burning fat as your fuel source. In other words, decreased fat storage and decreased body fat percentage and increased good-lookingness. Win!
Very briefly these hormones are produced in response to blood sugar, and free fatty acid levels. Fructose (sugar is 50% fructose) disrupts the operation of this system reducing the feeling of fullness and makes us eat more.
hi tim i saw this diet and i think it looks pretty cool so i started and today is my second day. i live in trinidad and don”t work since im seventeen , and go to school, therefore i don’t really have access to these books so i’m basically following the diet based on what is on this page. Its my second day and i simply cant wait for saturday. its going well so far but i have some concerns:
Breadie, If you’re ‘lean and fit’ (and don’t need to lose weight) and you think the Paleo way of eating is too restrictive…I’m wondering why you’re on this site…and as to your comment above about Paleo being restrictive if ‘you LOVE grains’ – the Vegan and Vegetarian diets would be ‘too restrictive’ to someone who likes to eat meat – so whats your point?
It’s probably worth noting that when I’m at the gym, I have the bike at a such a high level I struggle to finish – usually heart rate is about 180 – 185 per minute towards the end. I’m not very good at running, so on the treadmill I tend to do 5 mins on a fast run (14km/ph for me) and then for the remaining 15 mins, I will put it on a high incline and run for 2 mins (10km/ph) and then walk for 1 min or vice versa depending on how I feel.
Congrats on taking steps to improving your health! Your initial weight loss is awesome, but keep in mind that the body needs to adjust to sudden changes. It may take you a few weeks before you lose more weight, and eating super low calories to force weight loss isn’t sustainable. So I would encourage you to eat to meet your nutrition and hunger needs, and not focus entirely on calorie count. Also, as you know, a sedentary lifestyle is hard, so just make every effort to move when you can. Here is more information on how to lose weight when you have a plateau: http://www.paleoplan.com/2015/07-07/14-tips-to-overcoming-weight-plateaus/
The Paleo Diet does NOT revolve around meat and little else! Plenty of Fresh Organic Vegetables should be 3/4 of your meal every time. The mainstay of the Paleo Diet is the elimination of all processed foods, grains, sugar, and legumes. I’ve been on the diet for 8 months and lost over 25 lbs, and I’m NEVER hungry. Do I crave foods I can’t have, or ‘fall off the wagon’ now and then? Of course I do, but I get back on track ASAP!
So I’m currently losing following more traditional techniques of weight loss (with weekly success) and plan to switch to a more paleo diet once I reached my target weight as I do believe in the health principals of this way of eating.
The holy grail of weight loss, then, is an approach that naturally and spontaneously leads to lower calorie intake. In other words, eating less without trying to eat less. Many diets promise this, but there’s only one diet I’ve seen that actually delivers over the long-term: the Paleo diet.
As far as the protein goes, I am eating fish, eggs, and protein powder. I don’t eat chicken, beef, pork… so those are my swaps, hoping it wont mess anything up. I just had my gall bladder out, so my system is a bit touchy. I had beans all week, and it’s been rough. I have a hi protein, hi fiber, low carb, organic whole grain bread that I may try swapping for the beans a few times this week. (only 2 net carbs) I hope it goes alright, I don’t see why not?
Alcohol: Not part of a true Paleo diet. Following “The Paleo Diet,” though, you can have the occasional glass of wine or beer during a cheat meal. (Alcohol only adds empty calories anyway, and if you’re trying to lose weight, every calorie counts.)
Go easy on the starches: If your Paleo prescription includes starchy veggies, remember to eat them in moderation. Similarly to sugars, they’re digested relatively quickly and have a greater impact on blood sugar and insulin than other foods on the Paleo diet.
You figured you were on an easy peasy downhill ride to your optimal size. So you kept doing what you did the first week, but after the 2nd or 3rd week, the weight stopped coming off. And now you’re stuck right where you were at week 3. Maybe you’ve even gained some weight.
I’m not Tim, but the benefit of the beans is that traditional low-carb diets are lower in fiber and very low in carbs. Beans, becuase of their high fiber content and high protein are not going to cause a massive spike in blood sugar. You’ll need a food that delivers something similar. I.E. complex carbs, fiber, and protein.
Many people prefer to have a set of rules to follow when dieting. Others may crave the emotional support from attending counseling sessions or meetings. Diet products, fitness and nutrition books, and health services have become a billion-dollar industry, so there are obviously many people looking for help with weight control. Before you jump on the latest diet bandwagon, remember that organized diet plans and programs can only result in weight loss if you burn more calories than you consume. No dietary supplements, exercise devices, combinations of foods, or specific patterns of eating will change this fact.
I have Celiac Disease. I have to eat a gluten-free diet. No wheat, rye, barley, malt. I can eat fruit, vegetables, meat/seafood, veggies, anything NOT containing gluten. I do have options for gluten-free pasta. Is there a Paleo Diet Meal Plan that includes gluten-free foods and ingredients where I can eat right AND lose weight? If so, where can I find it? I have high blood pressure and need to lose weight, about 30 pounds, but most gluten-free foods contain so many calories and fat, and are expensive! Also, I want to do this safely. HELP!! I want to be foxy at 50!
An estimated 20 million Americans have thyroid disorders, but more than half don’t know it. Find out why thyroid problems are so often mis-diagnosed, what really causes them, and how to heal them naturally.
I’m about to start paleo, but was wondering is there a way to go completely without anything nut and coconut based, and still make paleo fried chicken and such? So no almond flour or milk and no coconut flour or milk.
Find a cheering section. Social support means a lot. Programs like Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers use group support to impact weight loss and lifelong healthy eating. Seek out support—whether in the form of family, friends, or a support group—to get the encouragement you need.
Modern man faces many chronic diseases that didn’t plague them in prehistoric days, so hypothetically, eating the same way should improve your health. Time magazine reports that most nutritional experts think it’s a gross oversimplification:
There are other simple means to get rid of the excess fat from your body, which always seems to become a cause for low self-esteem and loss of confidence. But, when you give your body a makeover by shedding those extra pounds, then that would really be the best thing you are giving to yourself.
I agree… Its nothing but a jumpstart to motivate you to lose weight and keep going…and trust me… 10 pounds in a week was alot of motivation for me. I did the cabbage soup diet. They are all the same. But i do it for a week then off for two weeks… Maintaining well!!!
I cannot classify myself as Paleo, yet. I am attempting the transition. Just a month ago I’d probably scoffed and said dumb idea to do the organic natural blah blah blah, everyone dies eventually and you only live once right? Well, I stumbled onto the Paleo while searching Low carb high fiber as I want to better myself due to diabetes and other things that run in my family like thyroid issues, obesity, and bowel problems. Knock on wood nothing for me yet at age 28. My cousin at 29 was just diagnosed with ulcerative colitis after a time of wondering wtf?! Oh snap! I’m getting off my tush and improving myself now! Along with my husband and 2 young daughters. My oldest age 5 has bouts of frequent constipation and acid reflux since birth, but eats a lot of veggies. Cheese is her problem. My husband had adhesions of the bowel as a baby, and gets severe blockages that land him in the hospital about every 4-5 yrs. me, I just have a problem with convenient foods and an office desk job ugh! I’m a legal drug lord for livestock (I joke) I sell medications for cattle. So for me to be Paleo and keep my job it sounds funny, but it’s just a job.
One fat binder: It is an extract from Chitosan, a typical ingredient for weight loss in Japan as well as Europe. If the metabolizers reduce fat, Chitosan will lock it and make it produce at the minimum rate. Moreover, it contains a significant amount of fiber, which assists your digestion to function better. If you want to lose weight but have problems with digesting, these pills are perfect for you.
I would suggest a good gym and less low quality foods. Eat more veggies, fruits in combination with lots of cardio and plenty of water. In 3 weeks you will get a different look and you do not need any special diet.
Another 2014 study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition compared the effects of the Paleo to those of a standard low-fat diet on 70 obese, postmenopausal women. After six months, the Paleo group lost 14 pounds on average, while the other group lost nearly 6 pounds. After a year, the Paleo group had lost 19 pounds on average, and the low-fat dieters had dropped 10 pounds. A year later, both groups had regained some weight: The Paleo group was still down 10 pounds, while the low-fat group had dropped an average of more than 6 pounds.
