Ultimately, however good our diet is, if we’re thinking too much about what we eat, we’re probably eating more than we need. The times when I feel the thinnest and healthiest are when I’m enjoying life and passionately involved in my projects. The old saying “Eat to live, not live to eat,” is really wise. People (including me at times) who spend all day planning healthy meals and grocery shopping, etc., are probably using this behavior at least partly to escape from life. And when you’re not really living, what else is there to do besides eat (and maybe spend too much time posting on blogs, lol)? For me, reducing food reward down to nothing is only an excuse to further retreat from life. Look at photos of both Guyenet and Sisson. Who do you think has a richer, more passionate existence? Simple food, YES. Purposely tasteless food, NO. Don’t do it.

4. Whole grain is not recommended on this diet, due to high caloric content and generally high glycemic index. I challenge you to find one that is not “enriched” (it is bleached, then vitamins, etc. are added back in) or that doesn’t contain high fructose corn syrup in its first five ingredients (the ingredients of the “ingredients” listing on all food products are listed in descending order of quantity). It is tempting but not good for fat loss. True whole-grain bread is better than white bread and actually tastes pretty rough, but if you’re serious about fat-loss, I discourage consuming it. Saturdays allow you to go nuts, so be strict otherwise.
Follow the diet to the letter, anything else and you’re screwing yourself and going through a hardship for less than what you can get out of it. Meaning, let’s say you lose 6-9 lbs in 7 days but you know that had you followed the plan to a “T”, you could of lost up to 17 lbs instead?
6. Go the distance. “Stop using the closest rest room, parking space, or vending machine,” says Minneapolis fitness trainer Sandra Swami. As the instructor of a program that’s designed to help working women get more active, Swami urges her clients to get in the habit of taking the longest route to the rest room (on a different floor, if that’s possible) and climb stairs to get there.
So I’m currently losing following more traditional techniques of weight loss (with weekly success) and plan to switch to a more paleo diet once I reached my target weight as I do believe in the health principals of this way of eating.
Why does this work? Because you’re only eating foods that you’re genetically engineered to thrive on: high quality, high energy REAL foods. Not from a box, not from a bag, not from a window. Food from the earth. Yay nature.
About 7 months ago I started my diet. I begin by consuming NO CARBS for two weeks to kick start things. I also fast one day a week. Fasting is no big deal and once you get used to it and you kind of look forward to your “fast” day. I went from 218 to 198 and then I kind of went off the diet.
Cauliflower Rice – Gotta serve up your stir fry with a side of Paleo-ified rice. It’s remarkably easy to make and you’ll be surprised at how closely it replicates the real thing. Instead of feeling bloated and stuffed after eating white rice, you’ll feel full and satisfied with cauliflower rice. And the bonus is you won’t be hungry again an hour later.
Make friends with good fats. Small amounts of fat can help you feel full and less like you’re on a diet. The better choices are those in fish, nuts, and seeds, and olive oil or coconut oils. Those have unsaturated fats — polyunsaturated or monounsaturated fats, specifically.
ACV can improve the body’s utilization of iron, a nutrient that acts like fire-starter for fuel. Iron is a key component in substances that carry oxygen to the cells and hold it there. It’s the ability of apple cider vinegar to increase iron utilization and energy consumption in the body that makes it such a supportive food for weight loss.
I agree that the number of calories consumed should be less than burned for weight loss and calculating, weighing, counting, tracking is the only way to be fully aware of how many you’re consuming. I’ve never allowed myself to gain more than 10-15 lbs throughout my adult life (I’m 54) except during my 4 pregnancies. I always took off weight by doing what I stated above . Something changed about 8 years ago. I find it extremely difficult and tedious to track everything I eat. I’ve tried Fitness Pal, Weight Watchers, Sparkpeople, food journals and more. Those are all great tools but very difficult/time consuming to stick with. I found myself planning every single morsel. I was not able to lose any of the 10 lbs I’d like to drop because as soon as 3 dropped, 4 came back on. I have been yo-yo-ing like this for 6 yrs!!!! So discouraging! On Paleo, I eat strictly what hunter gatherers would eat. My meals are bigger than before and i eat whenever I am hungry. The first 4 lbs have come off within 8 days without even trying. The difference? This is the easiest, tastiest, most nourishing way of eating for me since my kids were little. I track nothing. I follow the guidelines of what is allowed and what to avoid. I look forward to each meal and never feel as if I’m on a diet. To continue losing I will have to shrink my portions and not eat so close to bedtime, but compared to tracking, that is super easy to do. My body (and brain) are thanking me for no longer “abusing” them by calculating every single bite that passes my lips. Perhaps my body has been reset, as they say. Perhaps I have accepted that at 5’9″ weighing 161 lbs is not that bad because for the first time in 6 years, I feel GREAT! I encourage everyone to at least give Paleo an honest try.

Hi Tim, I have just been briefly reading through and I am doing all the Rules you have mentioned plus exeercising for at least 30 minutes a day doing walking/jogging and have been for a week now and I cannot see any results!
Sorry for the rant but calories have been documented in study after study as the factor for body composition (weight training to keep/build lean mass as well) but have such a negative stigma that I had to post it somewhere.
Those following the Whole30 diet give up sugar, artificial sweeteners, grains, dairy, legumes, and alcohol for 30 loooooong days. That means the vast majority of packaged foods—from cookies to ketchup—are out, as is your nightly glass of red wine. Foods that are typically considered pretty darn good-for-you, like quinoa, hummus, and Greek yogurt, are also no-gos.

It was great to see you, Chris. Thank you for visiting Seattle on your book tour. I thought the example of the woman in her 40s you put up in your talk was much like what I do – I really only eat from 11 am to 7 pm on a fairly low carbohydrate diet.
Those of you who are stymied by stubborn fat loss might consider seeking a practitioner in your area who can help you dig a little deeper into what might be holding up your progress. It’s certainly not all about diet. Diet is a huge issue, but if you’ve been following Chris’s work for any length of time, you’re probably well aware of the big roles that stress, sleep, natural light, functional movement, relaxation, and JOY all play in overall health as well as getting to and maintaining an appropriate weight. (And, of course, yes, hormones!)
Personally, I struggled with my weight fluctuating throughout high school and college. I tried many different diets and counted calories and would lose 10 pounds, then gain 20. I was ALWAYS hungry. It wasn’t until June or July of 2006, when I went to a doctor that practices functional medicine where I found out about my food sensitivities (gluten, dairy, eggs, and yeast mainly) It was a tough transition at first because the food industry isn’t helpful in the healing process! I was 173 pounds and am 5′-1.5″ and within several months, the weight just melted off and I was never hungry. Also, cravings went away. I have been able to keep my weight stable for over 7 years with ease. Most importantly, the way I look at food and nutrition has changed. I look at food as medicine now and love how when I eat a certain way, I feel great. What I love about the paleo diet is that it stresses eating unprocessed foods that are delicious and I am never hungry. There have been times where I have introduced grains like rice and quinoa back in my diet and have had stomach issues. Everyone is different and it is a definitely a process finding out what works for your body and what doesn’t… But feeling amazing and not being inflamed is well worth it!
