Yes, you need to explain that. Because usually losing weight implies counting calories, or limiting fat, or “watching” what you eat, or exercising more. Which isn’t the case with a paleo-type diet. I’ve been on a diet since I was 13 years old….I am now 60. I went paleo 3 months ago and for the FIRST time I am NOT on a diet. I eat anything I want, as much as I want, anytime I want, and still lose weight. That is what Chris is saying when he says “without trying”!!
According to Well Being Journal Jan/Feb 2013, pg 4 an article titled Diabetes, Fats, and Carbohydrates, the sidebar article states “A healthy amount of good (saturated and olive oil) in a daily regimen of 2,000 calories would consist of at least eight tablespoons of these fats in order for you to get JUST HALF (caps mine) of your calories from fats. One tablespoon of coconut oil or other healthy fat generally equals about 130 calories”.

You can take antacids or over the counter acid blockers as a trial, avoid alcohol and very acidic or greasy foods and don’t lie flat (use pillows) to keep acid in your stomach. I have to say that since going paleo the weight loss has been significant. Not only have I lost weight around my waist, I really feel far more energetic – I don’t have the allergic reactions, especially hay fever or heavy head and I have so much more energy.

I think everyone is unique and some snippet of my DNA makes me less efficient at burning fat. After living in my body 50plus years I see what works for me. Personally I don’t full sated when I eat fat. I just want to eat more. But a whole plate of steamed brocolli or cauliflower. Then I feel full.
The Paleo diet consists of “wild foods” – foods that would have been eaten by hunter-gatherer tribes. This means fish, grass-fed meats and game meats are all acceptable, but farm-raised animals should be excluded. Vegetables and fruits are also acceptable, but there are variations on which ones are acceptable – some versions of the Paleo diet say you’re only allowed “wild fruits” such as berries, while others make more concessions. Some versions of the Paleo diet recommend raw eating, but cooking your foods is perfectly acceptable. Eggs, nuts, seeds and anything else you could pick up (gather), such as roots and fungi, are also acceptable foods in the Paleo diet.

My husband and I starting following a paleo eating style in September, 2014. I have lost about 20 pounds and have maintained that since early December. Early on, during my research, one author suggested to follow and 80/20 plan, striving to eat clean at least 80% of the time. I think this mind set has really helped me stick to the program. Knowing that I have limited, not eliminated foods makes it much easier for me. I find that I don’t even want the foods that are not part of the plan. But, hey, if I want to have a cookie I have one and don’t beat myself up over it.
I have always been what most would consider a “big girl”. In January 2016, I weighed 222 lbs (around 95 kilograms), which is quite overweight for a woman my height. I wasn’t always this weight though. In my teenage years, I weighed only 140 pounds and I felt much healthier and happier.

This is called the Food Reward Hypothesis. Basically it goes like this: the foods available in the modern world are more intensely stimulating than anything our brains evolved to deal with. Most people innately find certain tastes and textures (sweetness, saltiness, crunchiness…) pleasurable; this pleasure is called food reward. Highly processed foods overwhelm our brains with a level of food reward that they simply can’t handle, creating a kind of food addiction and throwing our natural taste for healthy foods completely out of balance.
Once you’ve decided to switch to the Paleo diet, you need to spend some time rebuilding your pantry. That means throwing away all processed snacks and replacing them with unsalted nuts and seeds, dried fruits, nut butters, banana and plantain chips (no sugar added). If you miss potato chips, you can get a similar texture from cassava root or taro root chips. They available at most health food stores.
I’m not eating comfort foods or any kind of potatoes. I’m not over eating and not starving. I move around a lot during the day so not sedentary. I rarely eat nuts and no seeds other than a little bit of tahini on my salad with homemade oil and vinegar dressing used sparsely. I don’t eat bacon and rarely avocado. I don’t eat a lot of fruit either. This is my second time around doing a Paleo diet and my weight is going up and down like a yo yo. I went down 2 lbs in 2 weeks and now I am up to where my weight loss is about .8 from where I started the diet. It is extremely frustrating considering my husband lost about 6 lbs on the diet and he is eating nuts and peanut butter with apple snacks and more food than I am.
For example, almond flour and coconut flour are allowed in the Paleo diet. You’ll have to learn how to bake with them (they require different preparation and cooking times than regular white flour), but once you get used to them, they’ll be a great substitute. While you can’t have white sugars, you can use agave syrup and maple syrup in baking. Applesauce is also a great natural sweetener and can be used in cooking but also as a sweetener in sauces or as a “dip” for fruits or veggies.
Decide on some nonfood rewards for yourself when you reach interim goals. For examples, at the end of the first week of healthy eating or after the first 5 pounds lost, buy yourself a new DVD, app, or book.
I’d love to know more about the nitty gritty behind weight loss and paleo. I see many people say how the pounds just melt off…. Not for me. I’ve been following a Paleo diet for almost a year, and I have not lost any weight. Before switching to Paleo, I was already sugar and gluten-free, so giving up grains and legumes was not such a big deal.

I respectfully disagree. No one is saying paleo is easy for everyone. But it’s not as difficult as it sounds. I eat lots of fruit, vegetables, potatoes (white and sweet), white rice, eggs, some dairy and meat. I cheat occasionally (mostly at family gatherings), but I feel so MUCH BETTER. That alone makes it easy to stay on this diet. When you’re eating enough fats, protein and safe starches you don’t crave all the sugar, flour and junk foods of the past.
I am changing my entire family to paleo, two teens and my boyfriend as well as myself. They miss bread and sweets, but these recipes will really help. Only issues, one daughter hates coconut, so I will disguise that and see if she notices the taste and he doesn’t like curry, so I will make alternatives and my other daughter misses her sugar and chips. This shall be an adventure to say the least.
