no, paleo is not a high fat diet, this is not ketogenics which is dangerous for diabetics. Paleo is a high protein (high meaning your larger macro %) moderate fats, and picky carbs (carbs from plants, particularly with high fiber content). The truth is, calories do count, even on Paleo. I don’t actually count them, but know if I’m starting to gain (I lost 80 pounds years ago) I’m eating too much, and cut back. But, I’ve found this to be an easy diet to stick to. For the first time in my life I’m not hungry all the time and my energy is great. But, that doesn’t mean I somehow know when to stop eating automatically like a regular skinny person. I’m not even skinny. I think it’s a mistake to tell overweight people they can just eat what they want as long as it’s on the diet. No. So, a little self guidance and discipline is necessary. Knowing that at the beginning eliminates surprises and a sense of failure on this diet.

I’m not eating comfort foods or any kind of potatoes. I’m not over eating and not starving. I move around a lot during the day so not sedentary. I rarely eat nuts and no seeds other than a little bit of tahini on my salad with homemade oil and vinegar dressing used sparsely. I don’t eat bacon and rarely avocado. I don’t eat a lot of fruit either. This is my second time around doing a Paleo diet and my weight is going up and down like a yo yo. I went down 2 lbs in 2 weeks and now I am up to where my weight loss is about .8 from where I started the diet. It is extremely frustrating considering my husband about 6 lbs on the diet and he is eating nuts and peanut butter with apple snacks and more food than I am.
Sandy, try taking 5 to 10 grams of BCAAs 10-15 minutes prior to your walk. I take 10 grams before my workouts MWF, and before my sprints TT. Definitely helps. Downside, plain BCAA sups taste like crap, flavored is artificial (but no calorie). For more info, go to leangains dot com.
It is called the “low carb flu” and is usually over within a few days. For me it takes 3. Adding some sodium to your diet can help with this, such as dissolving a bouillon cube in a cup of hot water and drinking it.
As far as possible, avoid the consumption of junk foods and go for a natural diet. Processed foods like cakes, cookies, sodas, chips and fast foods are not good for our health. Since these synthetic foods are in a packaged form, they are usually in storage for long periods of time and hence, are extremely unhealthy. Excess consumption of these foods often leads to weight gain. So cut them out of your diet and look for healthier alternatives.
Honestly, it was both. I wanted to be a healthy, vibrant example for my kids of what a woman should be. I wanted to be able to play with them and get down on the floor. I also wanted to look good and turn heads. As I started to feel better, I started to look better and vice versa.

I completely agree with Andy. All the sugars – honey, agave, etc.- “allowable” on Paleo trigger insulin responses and signal the body to store fat. I went low carb 2 years ago, and yes, the excess fat I couldn’t lose for 30 years just evaporated. Now if I ever feel a pound or 2 creeping back (rare), I check in on my carbs, cut back a bit, INCREASE dietary FAT (yes!), and I’m back to good in no time. No mother wants to have her children prematurely. No mother wants to have to visit her newborn in the hospital, in an incubator, connected to tubes. It was devastating not being able to hold them or breastfeed. It was horrible seeing their eyes, which were still black when they were born, being exposed to light that they shouldn’t be. Seeing their skin hanging off them in folds as they hadn’t filled out with fat yet. Their nipples hadn’t formed yet, either. I thought they were going to be reproductively damaged. The nurses fed them formula through tubes. It was a horrible, horrible time. I know I still have some anger I’m harboring over the incompetence of the hospital staff and we also went through all the physical therapy madness you did with your preemie twins; thankfully I realized my boys were “normal” early on and I could relax and just let them develop at their own pace. I know a lot of guilt I feel at not being able to produce enough milk and having to feed them formula they were allergic to is something that will take me years to get over, but knowing I’m doing the right thing now and feeding them properly makes me feel better.

I am 54 and on my 2nd week of Paleo which I adopted to feel better and eat healthfully. My biggest rave is that I’d forgotten how much I enjoy real food (as opposed to processed, fast, or prepared.) With so many vegetables to choose from, cooked or raw, and yummy protein options, every meal is a guilt free adventure. Lol.
