The reason being that protein can be converted to glucose (from what I understand). Fat however, cannot. Your body can burn fat directly. This is why some diets (like atkins) stress lots of fat in the beginning. This may very likely be unpleasant at first, but you get used to it, and its temporary to fix your body’s insulin resistance. Contrary to some folks’ opinion (probably all carb addicts by the way), this state (ketosis) is not dangerous to a healthy individual. They mix up ketosis with a dangerous state caused by kidney failure called ketoacidosis. Not the same thing. Also, there has been no record of a low carb, high protein diet causing kidney failure in a previously healthy individual, ever.

I started a Primal?Paleo diet about two weeks ago. I am still STARVING all the time and am not losing weight. Thank you for this article. It was very timely for my spouse, who started eating “Paleo” with me a couple of months ago but wasn’t seeing the weight loss he was hoping for. I think he may have taken the “don’t count calories” aspect of ancestral nutrition a bit too far and went crazy eating avocado and tons of nuts. Even nutrient dense foods like that will put the weight on if consumed in excess.

Ideal body weight is just a rough guide. A more accurate gauge of ideal weight is body fat composition. Body fat norms vary by age and gender. At any age, a woman’s body is composed of more fat than a man’s.

What does your paleo diet look like? If it has been molded to look like cheese cake, tacos made out of bacon, pancakes made out of almond flour, yeah, guess what, you have made it too tasty and calorie-dense and you are probably not going to be dropping any weight, especially if weight loss is hard for you like it is for me. If it looks like voluminous salads, bone broths, reasonable servings of meats balanced with plenty of vegetables, and berries and no more than a handful of nuts per day and maybe a square of dark chocolate for a treat, and if you tolerate them, some PLAIN potatoes or sweet potatoes, then you have a fighting chance.
