Danielle – you may be experiencing what they call the carb-flu its basically your body detoxing from the carbs and sugar that we are no longer eating. How long have you tried eating this way? Usually the carb-flu will last about a week or so but for some it can take a couple of weeks before you start feeling really good – hard to deal with but is so worth it once you get over that hump! Another suggestion would be upping your fat intake and make sure you are getting plenty of sleep. research is showing more and more how very important the sleep aspect is for our health! I am getting a bit discouraged here since I feel like I am doing everything right and I am still struggling to lose weight and keep it off…I know these last 10 pounds are the hardest to lose but I am wondering if something else is to blame for the plateaus and recent weight increase after a weight loss.
Hi! It’s been a while since this post, so I hope you were successful. As a nurse, I had a few questions and concerns when I read this. Here is the thing- it is never a good idea to go “only” anything. You husband needs to first adapt to the lack of processed food and so forth. Add in more green vegetables(not iceberg lettuce) and the occasional whole fruit. He should cut back on his carbs in general, but as a diabetic, he should not eliminate them entirely, especially right at the beginning. This can be quite a shock to the system and can really mess up his blood sugar. I am actually surprised the doctor told him this, or maybe he misunderstood? An all protein diet is hard on many body systems, especially the kidneys, and a diabetic frequently already has compromised kidney function. What he should concentrate on is fiber rich, low sugar foods and a balanced plate. He also needs to increase his activity level. It might just mean getting up and walking around the house more at first, but I would definitely recommend weight training for diabetics and 20-30 minutes of cardio about twice a week, as this will address both insulin resistance and elevated cholesterol, which is also common in type 2 diabetics. I would encourage you to look at this as a marathon, not a sprint. Once his blood sugars and insulin levels even out, the weight loss will come more easily and quickly. That will take some time, so don’t give up!

I have been a very faithful Paleo follower for over 2 years now. I kept a constant weight for all but the last 6 months where I have gained 10 and no matter how much I walked it did not take the weight off. So just last week I changed things up a bit. I call it the Paleo Zone where I try to balance each meal and snack with protein, healthy carbs and fats. I lost 4 lbs the first week. Now I’m wondering if my daily walks 2.5 to 4 miles a day could be causing some inflammation. @einstein – Among paleo dieters, there are a lot of women that claim it the paleo diet is ineffective or causes weight gain. I suspect is because they might be making it look, taste, and feel too much like the standard american diet. Look at online forums and how many complaints there are from people seeking help. It does not look like a small percentage of people.
Limit saturated fat and trans fat and replace them with the better fats, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. If you need to lower your blood cholesterol, reduce saturated fat to no more than 5 to 6 percent of total calories. For someone eating 2,000 calories a day, that’s about 13 grams of saturated fat.
Follow the diet to the letter, anything else and you’re screwing yourself and going through a hardship for less than what you can get out of it. Meaning, let’s say you lose 6-9 lbs in 7 days but you know that had you followed the plan to a “T”, you could of lost up to 17 lbs instead?
I do agree that our food nowadays is crap! Its a shame that it takes a part time job to afford high quality organic foods but its now getting to the point that with GMO we might not even be able to avoid it even with our best intentions. Yea, its scary scary stuff and its all based on greed.
I also want to say thank you for giving me the impetus to DO something. So often I read a diet book or a blog and think “yah, I should do that. Sounds hard though. Who am I kidding? I’ll never do that.” But what Tim is describing makes me think “That I could do.”
Case in point: my wife has a nutrition and weight loss clinic. Completely natural, with its basis in a grain-free, sugar-free, low carb diet (thank you Davis and Perlmutter). Not freaky low carb, just smart. Everyone, and I mean everyone, loses weight and keeps it off. Everyone feels better. This isn’t “most” of her clientele, this is 100%.
A calorie isn’t always a calorie. Eating 100 calories of high fructose corn syrup, for example, can have a different effect on your body than eating 100 calories of broccoli. The trick for sustained weight loss is to ditch the foods that are packed with calories but don’t make you feel full (like candy) and replace them with foods that fill you up without being loaded with calories (like vegetables).
With respect to amanda, regarding fruit “being good for you” it is a matter of the timing the amount and other factors. Fruits, all of them, do spike your blood sugar. They are more healthy than candy of course, full of necessary nutrients, vitamins, and fiber, but at the end of the day they are also full of sugar.
