A study from Emory University suggests that our Paleolithic ancestors consumed approximately 30 percent of calories from protein, 35 percent from carbohydrates, and 35 percent from fats. Honey is thought to have contributed about three percent of total calories, while their fiber consumption was around 100 grams per day.

Stress is both psychological and biological. Overeating causes biological stress through inflammation due to the excess production of free radicals and what are known as reactive oxygen species that cause cell damage and an inflammatory response. The second reason for elevated inflammation is Advanced Glycation End products (AGE’s) these are the result of uncontrolled reactions between sugars and fats (sugars and amino acids as well but to a lesser degree). Fructose is 7 to 10 times more likely to cause these reactions than glucose, and polyunsaturated fats (much less stable fats) are much more likely to be subjected to these reactions than saturated fats.

In the modern world, stressors go far beyond emotional burdens and can include stimulants such as caffeine, lack of fresh air, sunshine, and natural movement, inadequate sleep and rest, environmental toxins, nutritional deficiencies, and underlying infections or disease processes. Exposure to chronic stressors leads to elevated cortisol levels, which in turn contributes to insulin resistance, promotes the storage of fat, and inhibits weight loss. Reducing chronic stress may involve techniques such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing, and massage, but it is also necessary to address the root causes. Evaluating the cause of psychological stressors in your life may require major life changes, such as deciding to end a relationship or change jobs. Physiological stressors may need to be addressed by partnering with a Paleo-minded health practitioner to discover underlying nutritional deficiencies and latent infections. It is impossible to completely eliminate all stressors when living in a contemporary society, but you can make quite a bit of headway in stress reduction simply by identifying the root causes of stress in your life and striving to make progress in each area.

If you’ve been diagnosed with Celiac, have you tried the Specific Carbohydrate diet? You might find that diet designed more for your particular body issues than anything else. There are some great websites that address this issue.

I AM, however, telling you that if you want to see results without spending hours upon hours in the gym, you need to get your diet under control, and this is the most efficient way for you to get there.

The base of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid focuses on generous amounts of healthy foods that contain a smaller number of calories in a large volume of food, particularly fruits and vegetables.

One friend of mine had dropped 15 kilos in two months with this diet that obviously worked!  This is put forward as a seven day diet, and although I am not always in favor of ‘crash’ diets, this one does merit some study.  It is reputedly from Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital and is used in their cardiac care unit for overweight patients to lose weight prior to surgery.

Try changing things up a bit by making sure you’re eating enough protein throughout the day. For instance, drinking only bulletproof coffee in the morning may not be stimulating your metabolism enough. You may find you need to make other changes as well. Look closely at the rest of the meals your eating and make sure all three macronutrients protein, carbs and healthy fats are adequate. If you’re not sure how much you need, check out the free website myfitnesspal.com and do some calorie counting just for a few days and see what happens.

That’s a time before agriculture, about 10,000 years ago. Back then, our ancestors hunted, fished and foraged for their food energy. Humans evolved by eating this way, and the idea behind the paleo eating plan is that without dairy, grain products and processed food, we’d feel and look better. Many people swear by it.

Start a calorie journal in which you write down the values of everything you eat. Creating a calorie journal and writing in it consistently will help you know when you’ve gone over your limit. It will tell you what foods worked when and whether they tasted good. It will give you a record of your struggles, which are always fun to look back on after the pain has passed!
