I started Paleo 3days ago. They call the first week “hell week” but I am loving it. I have no cravings and feel fantastic. I have already lost 4 lbs! No sugar. No grains. No coffee! Lol I replaced it with chai tea with vanilla almond milk I’m excited and plan to stay on it as a lifestyle change!

If you are at a plateau, try and cut out the things that have a lot of sodium, such as cottage cheese, deli meats (probably the worst) and red meats. Substitute alternatives like fresh turkey (not ground) or chicken. You would be surprised what happens in a week with lower sodium diet.

Directions: Rinse 1 cup of quinoa in cold water. In a medium saucepan, combine quinoa with 1 tablespoon curry powder and 1 teaspoon turmeric. Add 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer until the water is absorbed—about 15 minutes. Stir in 1 cup shredded carrots and 1 cup cubed firm tofu. Makes about 4 one-cup servings. Refrigerate remaining servings for an easy, healthy snack or meal later in the week.

Except paleo is not a diet but a lifestyle. And a very individual one too. My paleo is different from yours is different from his/hers. Diets inevitably fail on the long. No such threat on paleo. Paleo should be called the “Don’t eat foods that harm you, only eat foods that nourish your body and support your health” diet. Which ones are those? Nobody will give you a ready made free answer, because there is none. Everybody has to put in some effort and time to educate himself and find his answers. Or pay someone to guide him if he can’t do it alone. There is no free lunch and no free health either. If it was that easy, we’d all be healthy and beautiful, right? No matter what the individual specifics of each person, most ill health and excess weight has a common cause – ignorance. The only way out is through self improvement and education. This site is a good place to start.

You are absolutely right on track with your realization that Paleo is more than a diet, it is a “lifestyle.” It’s been a few days since you left this comment, how are you doing? Just a heads up that the first month of Paleo is quite challenging for most people, as they break-free from addictive foods and go through “The Dreaded Detox.” Most people get past this after 4-6 weeks on the’diet.’ With regards to nuts, the general consensus is ‘a small handful a day’ doesn’t seem to cause most people any issues. Fruit is a different story. Fruits are almost entirely made up of carbohydrate, with some fruits containing more carbs (i.e. bananas) than others (i.e. granny smith apples). In general, minimizing fruits (and carbs in general) will expedite weight loss. Also, if you can save your carbs/fruit till later in the day, they will have less of a ‘roller-coaster’ effect on your blood sugar throughout the day. Dried fruit and fruit juice are some of the highest-carb foods out there, and for this reason I personally avoid them. Having said all that, everyone is unique with regards to how many carbs their bodies are optimized with, and it does take some trial and error at first to figure out what will work best for you.

Phase out one food group at a time: Rather than eliminating everything all at once, consider a step-by-step approach. So, start by cutting out refined sugars, then move on to dairy, grains, and legumes, one at a time.

A late reply to a wayy old post but from experience I’ve noticed that you really have to have, (at least in my case), been on your diet for at least two weeks. I’ve tried the once per week cheat day and strictly gone right back to business the following six days and found that my weight loss stalled. However, I’ve stuck to the diet for 14 days straight, then massive cheat day, then 14 days etc and the weight has tumbled off.

And the few of us who do succeed to lose some weight by surviving a restrictive diet, will not have any clue on how to maintain it so that they don’t return to their previous size. Here’s the thing with this Diet. Its a great boost to get you back on track or lose weight fast. And that’s where people mess up. Do the week,but get on a fresh fruit and vegetable low salt,low sugar, low carb change of life way of eating. Diets are temporary and that’s what we seem to forget…

Be careful of falling into the same trap I did. I started Paleo twice, both times stopping short of where I needed to be. I found out (now a few years later) that it was because I stopped eating enough carbs. if you limit carbs too much your body will adapt by storing what it can when it can. this was may problem so I would lose 20 lbs the first few months, stall then get frustrated. It took alot of research to figure out what I did wrong. Know what are good carbs and make sure your including them in the amount that reflects your lifestyle. My other problem was not getting myself checked out. I found out recently my food sensitivities (tomatoes and nightshade veggies, eggs, milk products, almonds to name the bog ones) were causing me to stay inflamed. My gut also needed to be healed so I need to take a probiotic (not yogurt because there not enough and too many people are sensitive) and enzymes to get my stomach rebooted. Find a good functional nutritionist who can help you figure it out. It certainly helped me, my journey to 10% body fat is restarted and not nearly as hard on my stomach (in terms of eating what I want)

I’ve been primarily Paleo for over three years and my allergies are much better (basically gone – they flair if I don’t eat as clean). I used Chris’s autoimmune protocol and in 6-12 months put my Hashimoto’s in “remission”…. it is autoimmune disease so I will have to manage it my entire life, but the antibodies are not present in my blood, nor have they been for over a year and a two years. I think if we look at this as “getting back to wellness” and NOT a diet, it is much more achievable. Gluten is a HUGE no-no for me, I have had (to my knowledge) none in 3.5 years and I no longer miss it (which, by the way, didn’t happen overnight!). Grains are rough stuff if not prepared really carefully (look to Westin Price literature if you want to still eat grains).

2) You mention grass-fed beef in your article, but don’t mention why grass-fed is important (grain-fed has a higher, hidden caloric/carb content due to the corn feed, and consuming the antibiotic soup required to keep grain-fed cattle from exploding is probably also unhealthy; I’m sure there are other reasons). Is this also something you mention in your books?

I’ve not heard this about dairy fat before. I’ve only heard that medium chain fatty acids (coconut oil) could be used almost immediately for energy. Would this not have a similar effect? I would really like an excuse to eat cheese though, so thank you (?).

On Saturday I ate my typical breakfast of 4 egg whites, 2 whole eggs, and 6-8oz cooked baby spinach. 2.5 hours later I drove through Taco Johns and ordered a grilled burrito, small potato ole’s, and a small Mountain Dew. (I actually had a hard time finishing it whereas this would have almost been an appetizer before). 3 hours later I ate mixed fruit and some veggies and dip (cocktails), and finally ate chicken breast, dinner rolls, and a few M&Ms at the end of the evening. I will also note that all day I drank about a gallon of water or more.

Ornish may be the same kind of “Scientist” as Ancel Keys – a man seeking proof of his ideas, rather than objective knowledge. Some “scientists” cherry pick the data to provide “proof”. It is a constant problem with fame and money involved.

    come on, 128 is a dream weight for most women turning to paleo for weight loss. you are no way overweight. matter of fact you were probably way to skinny earlier and put on weight for a good reason. overweight people loose weight on paleo, underweight people put on some. don’t be so strict with yourself 🙂
