*But you’re actually eating MORE FOOD. You’re just eating Less Calories because weight loss foods have a ‘low calorie density’ meaning they pack a small amount of calories in a lot of food (see rule #4 for below more info)
I began the Paleo “lifestyle” just two weeks ago and I dropped six pounds thus far. I have what they call “skinny fat”. The weight is melting off and that’s with no exercise. I have five more pounds to drop and then I will get into a cardio routine. I have so much more energy. I nixed the bedtime sleep aids and fall asleep each night like a little baby. I’m also less hungry from all the high fiber content. My nighttime snack is now a plain, herbal tea of which I sip on. I did the Paleo plunge and went in cold turkey. Why drag the process on. Once on it, the clean eating is so rewarding, less mess and we throw out less trash as everything is fresh with zero packaging. I’m helping keep my system clean as well as the environment. I don’t see this as a “diet” but a “lifestyle”. Oh, and my stomach is as flat as a board! My hubby also commented today on how my legs look leaner! If you are second guessing this way of eating–DON’T. It is as natured intended. That’s why I feel so great!
Funny enough, the most weight loss I ever experienced was when I switched off the “SAD” (standard american diet) to Macrobiotics–about 15 years ago–giving sugar and dairy–and meat–but focusing on lots of grains and legumes. It’s strange to me that with THAT diet, I shed 25 pounds in a few months without trying…and yet, with Paleo, Nothing.
If you’re trying to lose weight, as you probably do, a healthy person should consume at least 1,200 calories per day, regardless of what their diet is. If you eat 1,200 calories, you’ll have 4,000 calories to burn a day to meet your goal.

The lap band worked great. Lost about 115 pounds in 2 years. I’m doing this diet b/c my normal diet had become really crappy. I started eating food that was “easy” to eat due to the lap band. Not complaining but ther are a few inconveniences. I was really huge and now just want to get off the last 40 or so pounds. This new way of eating has got me back to following the “eating rules” of a lapband aswell as improving my diet. I have lost about 15 pounds in the first month, feel much better and I can tell I am stronger in my golf game-distance, stamina, etc due to the kettlebell workouts. By the way, I didn’t gain the weight back from the lap band, just was really big and had let my choice of food be dictated by convenience and not what I should be eating. Anyway, I waould have the lapband done again in a heart beat- literally added years to my life.
Another huge reason why you might be fighting an uphill battle with weight loss is nutrient partitioning. Remember that this refers to whether an individual calorie gets burned for energy or stored as fat, and it requires healthy levels of hormones like insulin and leptin. For weight loss, you’re obviously hoping it gets burned for energy. Here’s how to make that happen:
I don’t know why everyone assumes Paleo means high fat. It doesn’t prescribe macro-nutrient percentages. That is highly individual. Some writers get a little prescriptive (like the Jaminets), but they are only one voice among many, and there is a lot of controversy even within Paleo. I think that people are used to diets being clearly defined. If you read a typical diet book, you will know exactly what you need to eat after about ten minutes. Then it either works out for you to eat that diet, or it doesn’t. Paleo shouldn’t be looked at that way. Rather than being a specific diet, it’s an approach to evaluating and designing your diet based on what your body evolved to eat. It isn’t nearly as specific or defined as a lot of people would like to think (which is highly inconvenient, granted, but such is life). Yes, a lot of people somehow equate Paleo to bacon (please), but I think those people are newbies and will probably soon move on to the next sparkly thing that comes along. Paleo demands that you put time and energy into figuring out what works for you, with the excellent guidance of people like Kresser, Sisson, the Jaminets, et al. Personally when I say I eat Paleo, what I mean is that I eat healthy, and that I invest time in figuring out what that means for me. It just happens that the writers who seem to reason the most persuasively in this area identify with the Paleo movement. Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater if eating the way one blogger recommends doesn’t work for you. Just understand that you might need to tinker with it some more.
The incredible piece here is that this diet actually seems to treat epilepsy very well, but there is a catch; it’s incredibly difficult to tolerate. According to WebMd, the diet prescribes that dieters to consume three calories of fat for every calorie of protein or carbohydrate. That’s a lot of fat. WebMd explains:
When did you start noticing the weight loss? I’m on day 3 tomorrow and I’m still at the same weight. I did fry mushrooms onion asparagus broccoli colliflower and peppers tonight, no butter just Braggs seasoning which is like a soy sauce but not… and of course the soup.. it definitely filled me up because I forgot to eat the baked potato. I’m curious if I should only be eating raw vegetables though.. I can get creative to make it easier but maybe it shouldn’t be easy to get the results I want?
Co enzyme Q10: Many people take coenzyme q 10. There is insufficient data for me to recommend it. Niacin is used to lower cholesterol and raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol but, again, the data is mixed. The recent “aim-high” study showed no benefit in pts adding it to a statin. Eating fish is beneficial. Taking fish oils may be helpful but remains unclear. Be choosy about carbs. You can decide which ones you eat, and how much. Look for those that are low on the glycemic index (for instance, asparagus is lower on the glycemic index than a potato) or lower in carbs per serving than others. Whole grains are better choices than processed items, because processing removes key nutrients such as fiber, iron, and B vitamins. They may be added back, such as in “enriched” bread.
If you’ve been diagnosed with Celiac, have you tried the Specific Carbohydrate diet? You might find that diet designed more for your particular body issues than anything else. There are some great websites that address this issue.
Regardless of how it starts, though, chronically high insulin can overwhelm the body’s “set point” and cause weight gain. Problems with insulin also affect another hormone called leptin, which regulates appetite and metabolism. The ultimate result is that your body is now “defending” a higher weight, making it very difficult to get (or stay) lean. If you want to lose weight like this, you’ll have to eat an astonishingly tiny amount of food, and you’ll constantly be hungry and cranky – realistically, it’s almost impossible.
