I agree that if you’re not achieving your weight loss goals, you should definitely take the time to reevaluate current patterns and try new things, as the article suggests. I disagree with your assumption that all diets are equally effective and that the onus for success rests solely on now hard an individual is willing to work. This thinking is outdated. We know now that our ability to burn fat is highly individual and some of us need to minimize insulin and other lipotrophic hormones as much as possible in order to lose weight. Have you read Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It by Gary Taubes? It’s fascinating and I bet you won’t be able to put it down.
brip – I don’t think I state anywhere on the site that I have anything against fatty meats or animal fats in general. In fact, I just cooked my eggs in duck fat. I totally agree with what you said about fats. As for fiber, I think it’s a little over rated, especially the stuff in beans, corn, and potatoes/rice/pasta. The Paleo Plan wouldn’t be the Paleo Pland if you were eating those foods (except the potatoes), in fact. You can get a ton of fiber in fruits and veggies – no need for those foods with all the anti-nutrients in them.

I gained quite a bit from having children (twins) etc. My naturopathic dr put me on the paleo diet and one year later I’m down 80lbs! It’s honestly quite easy when you’re on it long enough because you’re getting what your body needs and the cravings for sugar and carbs don’t taunt you because of this. I’m not even trying to lose weight anymore and am working on just getting in shape but the pounds are still coming off. It’s fantastic!

thank you Katherine for your input. I’m in a similar situation… I’m 49 and about 80 lbs overweight. I’ve been slowly moving toward eating paleo for the past year… some life challenges resulted in times where my diet went out the window… now for the past month I’ve been doing well and cooking more than I ever have (LOVE bone broths!). I saw about a total 7 lb weight loss and then had a major slip weekend and gained back 5 (sigh).
I have lost so far 13.5kgs or 30 pounds in just 7 weeks, the last few weeks I have been fasting all day long with a coffee or 2 in the morning to midday and eating quite a large dinner with 250 to 300 grams of fatty protein and a load of broccoli and cauliflower and some days I add peas to that or spinach.
nuts are very very fattening simply because they are so easy to eat too many off. I’ve had to ban them, as I can’t control my eating, so easier to just not have them. Also, the concept of ‘weight’ is very old fashioned. The thing to measure is waist. Forget scales. You can build muscle and lose ‘fat’ and that’s what’s important here. The more muscle the better for your health. WE are still to ‘weight’ focussed rather than just seeing if our clothes are fitting better or measuring waist. chuck the scales out, eat healthily, don’t worry. Building a better body takes time. I don’t know what country you are writing this from, but go to a doctor and have those tests for hormone/parasites/etc, I respect the right of people to spend their money where they like, but seriously, science has more than amply discredited things like kinesiology and iridology, but naturopathic schools are still teaching them. So I’d go to a doctor or a dietician if you are keeping a good exercise and food intake diary and are not losing weight, it’s normally just too much food and a requirement for longer kind of exercise (five hour walking through bush kind of thing). By the way, science means that you can duplicate and effect to control for a placebo effect, unfortunately many dodgy ‘evidence’ is still using in vitro or in vivo, but not human studies.
