I have to confess, the soup gets a little boring after a while. I took 1/4 of it and pureed it in a food processor, then added curry to that batch to create a completely different soup to help me get through the week. The soup is full of vegetables, so I don’t think there is any risk to this diet. I drank lots of water and herbal tea as well. I felt satisfied and was very motivated to complete the week.
Congratulations on an interesting and stimulating post, Tim! Your weight loss plan is very effective because it makes sense biochemically and you have succeeded in customizing it to your needs and tastes. I agree that the slow carb approach is much more effective than just eating the typical American diet and counting calories. Controlling insulin is a key principle to remember when trying to lose weight. Automating your food choices is a great plan. It obviously worked for you! I’m looking forward to reading more of your posts and “life experiments. I’ve ordered your book since it looks intriguing.
Hi Neely, a couple years ago I had gall bladder surgery and it was a mess. Initially, I tried to eat well and eventually fell into poor habits. I have been looking into the paleo diet and I am wondering how helpful it would be. At the time of the surgery my triglycerides were pretty high. I have recently started working out again and after getting back into it I am feeling better ( CROSSFIT), i have cut sodas from the diet completely and drink unsweetened tea and water with some milk and juice but not much. Looking for a place to start and get things rolling. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
After that there is a concoction called Fat-Burning Soup (FBS) which you make up and keep in the fridge. You gobble FBS any time you feel hungry and have as much as you want. You are also advised to drink plenty of water suggesting 6 – 8 glasses a day along with tea, coffee, skim milk, unsweetened juice or cranberry juice.
For the last six weeks I’ve been challenging and significantly reducing my portions. I’ve not been weighing and counting calories, nor have I changed what I eat. I’ve simply been eating a lot less. For example, where I’d have had three serving spoons of soup or bean’-less chilli, I now have two – and I don’t have seconds. Where I’d have had three rashers of bacon and two eggs, I now have two rashers of bacon and one egg. When I Intermittently Fast, I’m careful not to expand the size of my first post-fast meal to compensate.
Going again back to our evolutionary history, we didn’t always have the luxury of going to a vending machine or drive-through window to pick up food. Sometimes we’d go all day long, or even days at a time, without finding any food. Luckily, we’re designed to use our excess fat stores as energy in these situations.
I gained quite a bit from having children (twins) etc. My naturopathic dr put me on the paleo diet and one year later I’m down 80lbs! It’s honestly quite easy when you’re on it long enough because you’re getting what your body needs and the cravings for sugar and carbs don’t taunt you because of this. I’m not even trying to lose weight anymore and am working on just getting in shape but the pounds are still coming off. It’s fantastic!
I don’t paleo restrictive at all. It seemed like it at first, but I now feel that my paleo meals are so much more flavorful and enticing than eating bread and pasta. They seem so bland to me now. My diet revolves mostly around veggies with meat on the side. Maybe one or two fruits a day and a handful if nuts. I feel better than ever! My fourteen year old daughter Is a vegetarian that eats eggs and dairy, but limits grains. She’s very happy and healthy. Of course, she still eats pizza with friends, but I think that’s fine.
Try this strategy to permanently reduce cravings: Portion out one serving of your favorite treat, taking a minute to smell it, look at it, and think about it. Take one small bite. Chew slowly, moving it around your mouth and focusing on the texture and taste, then swallow. Ask yourself whether you want another bite or if that satisfied you. If you still want more, repeat, this time chewing the food 20 times. Continue this eating exercise for as long as you want or until you finish the serving (it should take about 10 minutes).
at 5’9 I was weighing 137 lbs, I went on Paleo and quickly lost 12lbs without even trying. Now at 125 lbs I have to ensure I keep muscle mass so my BMI does not drop into an unhealthy weight..Perhaps a lot of it still has to do with genetics.
I think that is why so many people trust it to assist them in their weight loss process. Moreover, it is also claimed to be one of the best diet pills that work fast without exercise by users. That is fascinating, right?
I’ve been on this diet for about a week now, but the biggest problem I have is the no beer rule. I know Tim does have wine, but I’d love to know exactly why beer is off limits? My thought would probably be 1) Tim says he prefers wine to beer 2) Beer tends to be high in calories (hence don’t drink your calories) 3) Beer tends to be high in carbs. Unfortunately for me, I’m an avid beer fan, and wine won’t cut it (light beer doesn’t either). Sooo what about something like Guinness Draught? It’s only 126 calories for a 12 oz serving and only about 10g carbs. There is some misleading information about beer containing a lot of maltose (very hight on the GI scale) however, maltose is mostly metabolized by the yeast during the fermentation process. Not to mention the fact that dark beer is also rich in anti-oxidants. So I guess I’m just trying self-justify drinking Guinness in place of wine. Both options are hard to swallow for a craft beer nut like myself, but Guinness is the lesser of both evils to me. Does this pass muster, chemically/nutritionally?
nuts are very very fattening simply because they are so easy to eat too many off. I’ve had to ban them, as I can’t control my eating, so easier to just not have them. Also, the concept of ‘weight’ is very old fashioned. The thing to measure is waist. Forget scales. You can build muscle and lose ‘fat’ and that’s what’s important here. The more muscle the better for your health. WE are still to ‘weight’ focussed rather than just seeing if our clothes are fitting better or measuring waist. chuck the scales out, eat healthily, don’t worry. Building a better body takes time. I don’t know what country you are writing this from, but go to a doctor and have those tests for hormone/parasites/etc, I respect the right of people to spend their money where they like, but seriously, science has more than amply discredited things like kinesiology and iridology, but naturopathic schools are still teaching them. So I’d go to a doctor or a dietician if you are keeping a good exercise and food intake diary and are not losing weight, it’s normally just too much food and a requirement for longer kind of exercise (five hour walking through bush kind of thing). By the way, science means that you can duplicate and effect to control for a placebo effect, unfortunately many dodgy ‘evidence’ is still using in vitro or in vivo, but not human studies.
Yet the new study found that after one year of focusing on food quality, not calories, the two groups lost substantial amounts of weight. On average, the members of the low-carb group lost just over 13 pounds, while those in the low-fat group lost about 11.7 pounds. Both groups also saw improvements in other health markers, like reductions in their waist sizes, body fat, and blood sugar and blood pressure levels.
Curried Paleo Cauliflower Soup – Have a bowl of this soup as a precursor to dinner, or serve it alongside the salmon and green beans. It’s the sort of soup that will get you salivating as it simmers, and will signal your digestive juices that it’s time to eat. It also provides you with a serving of cauliflower, a cruciferous vegetable with several health benefits.
A squeeze of lemon adds instant freshness to everything from drinks to salads to fish without additional calories, making it an ideal way to flavor food if you’re watching your weight. Plus, the pectin fiber in lemons can help fill you up and fight off hunger cravings. And while it hasn’t been scientifically proven, some experts believe that the citrus fruit can aid in weight loss, as well.
How to Fix It: Give yourself at least 30 days before you start looking for measurable results. Instead, focus on how you’re feeling, your energy levels, and how your clothes are fitting. Often you’ll notice these changes before the number on the scale starts moving.
When our surroundings cool down, a particular type of body fat gets activated which actually burns calories. Adults mostly have white fat while infants primarily have brown fat. This brown fat is known to burn calories to generate heat in the body in order to combat the cold temperature.
The truth is there is no “one size fits all” solution to permanent healthy weight loss. What works for one person may not work for you, since our bodies respond differently to different foods, depending on genetics and other health factors. To find the method of weight loss that’s right for you will likely take time and require patience, commitment, and some experimentation with different foods and diets.
I am on my 2nd day. I lost 106lbs with weight watchers through a course of 2 years. I got into a snowmobile accident and nearly killed myself, since than I went from very active and healthy for the first time in my life. Now 3 years and 50lbs heavier I felt like I was out of luck, because I have had hip surgery and they want me to have hip replacements and told me I would be crippled by the time I was 40. My brother in-law told me about paleo and how it can help with inflammation and pain, these two things are chronic. I feel like now there is hope, however I am really scared about doing a diet that is a 180 degrees from the one I did do and had hug success with. I am not able to work out no where near the way I used to. Is there anything encouraging you can tell me about what this will do for my health? I’m reading the books, visiting web sites trying to be informed as much as I can, I just want someone who knows what they are doing to give me a pep talk. Sincerely, Hillarie
Straighten up and your figure look better right away, advises The Biggest Loser trainer Kim Lyons. “When your posture is good, you’re automatically engaging and toning your stomach muscles,” she says. If you need to remind yourself to stand tall, a few strategically-placed sticky notes should do the trick.
I could recommend several hard-core thermogenics like ephedrine hydrochloride, but the trade-off in liver and kidney damage (not to mention things that few people realize, like sinuses) isn’t worth it.
In addition, refined carbohydrates (and grains, in general) have a very negative effect on your blood sugar balance. When you have spikes in your blood sugar (the cracked out feeling you get after eating a box of candy and then the crash you feel afterward), you’re contributing to weight gain because of the insulin and cortisol spikes you create in your body. More on that in another post, though.
The idea behind this diet is that by ditching the carbs, your body will switch into fat-burning mode. With a daily allowance of 20-25g of carbohydrates, the diet encourages your body to tap into fat stores for energy.
If you eat your dinner restaurant style on your plate rather than family style, helping yourself from bowls and platters on the table, you’ll lose weight. Most of us tend to eat an average of 150 percent more calories in the evening than in the morning. You’ll avoid that now because when your plate is empty, you’re finished; there’s no reaching for seconds. Check out these other sneaky ways to get your family to eat better.
I have a Polar Heart rate monitor that shows calories burned while I’m working out. I am wanting to know how many calories I am burning throughout the day. Would you recommend the Bodybugg, FitBit or perhaps another that I am not familiar with. Thanks for your input.

I just started a Paleo diet this week so I can’t say much about weight loss but I am praying that this diet helps me lose weight. Yesterday I was shopping at Old Bavy in the workout gear department and a woman told me I will lose all my weight once I have my baby. I’m not pregnant… But it confirms what I have been telling family… I look 4-5 mo pregnant and feel disgusting. So far I began working out at the gym again both in classes and using equipment called TechnoFit (idiot proof equipment). I have only been doing this for a week or so but can already tell that my digestive system is getting better and I gave more energy. I hope I can lose about 40 lbs in the next 2-3 months since I move to FL in July. If anyone has exercise or food advice please help me at firstname.lastname@example.org or just to be a Paleo buddy. I can use one.
No mother wants to have her children prematurely. No mother wants to have to visit her newborn in the hospital, in an incubator, connected to tubes. It was devastating not being able to hold them or breastfeed. It was horrible seeing their eyes, which were still black when they were born, being exposed to light that they shouldn’t be. Seeing their skin hanging off them in folds as they hadn’t filled out with fat yet. Their nipples hadn’t formed yet, either. I thought they were going to be reproductively damaged. The nurses fed them formula through tubes. It was a horrible, horrible time. I know I still have some anger I’m harboring over the incompetence of the hospital staff and we also went through all the physical therapy madness you did with your preemie twins; thankfully I realized my boys were “normal” early on and I could relax and just let them develop at their own pace. I know a lot of guilt I feel at not being able to produce enough milk and having to feed them formula they were allergic to is something that will take me years to get over, but knowing I’m doing the right thing now and feeding them properly makes me feel better.

Exercise is key to most weight loss plans because it helps you burn more calories, and more calories burned equals more pounds lost. But what if you hate exercise? Is it required to lose weight? It certainly helps you stay healthier (by revving your heart rate and building your muscles.) But it is not mandatory. There are ways to lose pounds without exercising.
Lentils also boast twice as much iron as other legumes and are especially good sources of vitamin B and folate. One variety, called Beluga black lentils, even contain a pigment that acts like an antioxidant, helping to fight heart disease, cancer, and signs of aging.
