I really believe that in a few years, the medical and nutritional community will come around to the low-carb/slow-carb way of thinking. Its all about insulin and blood sugar control. Its not about how much fat you eat. Butter never killed anyone. Stress and white bread? Now that’ll kill ya…
Anyway, slower is better, and as you say, eating enough fat and protein calories in order to keep the metabolism burning fat (which cannot happen in the presence of starches that become sugar once digested) is the way to do that.
1. Can you suggest any other foods that will work in the place of the beans? I really don’t like beans very much. Is the purpose of them in this just to get the caloric content up? If so, would I be ok in substituting more protein and fat in place of the beans?
I also found it really important not to have 100% off-limits foods. While I did move toward a paleo-esque diet, too much black-and-white thinking and rules derailed me in a hurry! They still do. I can do ultra-strict diets for health reasons, but I tend to put on a little weight from feeling deprived.

I just signed in to answer your question. I have been where you are and one thing that helped me enormously was being prescribed metformin by my dr. My weight literally went from not losing one week to losing the next, that’s how fast it changed for me. It took me six months of not losing to do anything about it, I should not have wasted that time. So if you know you have been low carbing in a way that should lead to weight loss, perhaps a drs visit might be necessary. I hope that helps.

Hi Chris, I have been on a paleo diet for 3 years now. Initially i lost 65lbs. I’m down to 220 now. I hike or mountain bike 6 days a week. 6 months ago I decided to start running. I’d double check the carb content on that Muscle Milk. It looks like it has about 10 grams of carbs per serving (not counting fiber). That’s 30 grams per day you probably don’t need on this diet, but depending on your goals, it shouldn’t be a big deal.

if you can’t lose weight and you’re “watching” what you eat, the most obvious reason for your condition is that you’re reactive to certain foods. Either allergic or sensitive (two different things). If that’s your case, you have to learn how to identify those offenders and eliminate them from your diet. But you can be reactive to a lot of foods and develop further reactive response as you go. Most of your body fat is “false” fat, which is fluid.
Bread, cereal, pasta, fried food, rice, bagels, doughnuts, waffles, chips, tortillas, candy etc. – these things are all loaded with carbs (and if they’re processed – refined carbs and sugar), and I’ll bet a million Monopoly dollars they’re the cause of 99% of the population’s weight problem.

Hi Laura. The potential problem with reducing carbs and increasing healthy fats is the caloric increase. If you do really low carbs you’d go into ketosis and burn fat. But if you go for healthy fats while continuing with carbs, the insulin (that drives you blood sugar into your cells) will keep you from efficient fat-burning. So, one thought is that you’d want to consider either further carb restriction (to make you a better fat burner) or going a bit easier on your fats (to decrease overall calories until you reach that tipping point where you start to lose weight), IF you can do that and still feel satiety from your diet.
Research out of the University of Texas at Austin found that people who drank diet soda tended to have larger waists.
