Here’s a hard truth: it’s not gonna happen! Most good things happen when you’re patient, and weight loss is a prime example. You have to work for it, and you have to wait for it. So, wait! Some people see instant results within a week or two with a huge drop-off then they plateau. This is normal! The body drops a lot of water when you give up refined carbohydrates and processed foods.
Fill your plate with vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains and add a little fish, white meat or dairy on the side. The Mediterranean diet derives from the idyllic countries surrounding the ocean which favours healthy fats and fresh produce.
Weight gain doesn’t happen overnight, and neither does weight loss. In order to see Paleo weight loss results, you have to be in it for the long haul; it has be a lifestyle rather than a diet. Unfortunately, diets generally put the focus on forbidden foods, rather than permitted ones. In the Paleo world, most of us can recite the mantra, “No grains, beans, dairy, sugar or industrial seed oils” with our eyes closed, but the thing that makes Paleo a true lifestyle is the plethora of produce, the multitude of meats and the vast cornucopia of spices, herbs and other flavors that are 100 percent Paleo approved. By looking at your plate of Paleo food options as “half full” rather than “half empty,” you’re much more likely to feel enthusiastic, optimistic and excited about sticking with the Paleo approach, and with this consistency will come results. On the contrary, if you’re always thinking about all the things that are excluded in Paleo, chances are you’re going to feel pretty miserable. You might think that you can no longer go out to dinner with friends, enjoy family meals or celebrate the holidays. The truth, however, is that your Paleo weight loss plan can actually open up an entirely new world of eating experiences if you simply focus your attention on what you can eat rather than what you cannot.
Weight loss is hard… while I’m a big fan of Chris’ and appreciate his wisdom and knowledge (and attended his book signing here in Boston), I think the tagline “without trying” is a bit of a stretch and misleading.
First of all, this theory doesn’t distinguish between calories that are nourishing and calories that are harmful. Yes, you’ll lose weight on 1,200 calories of Doritos every day, but you’ll also develop severe digestive problems and micronutrient deficiencies that do much more damage to your health than the weight loss repairs.
Eating leafy greens is a great way to increase the volume of your meals, without increasing the calories. Numerous studies show that meals and diets with a low energy density make people eat fewer calories overall (5).
Two-a-days, hitting the Crossfit gym six days a week, and hours of cardio a day are not sustainable and not healthy. Like mental and emotional stress raises cortisol levels, which contribute to hormonal imbalance and weight loss resistance, over-exercising creates a lot of physical stress. Our bodies respond to physical stress in a very similar way. We need to recover in order to function optimally.
Plan Ahead: Cook a chicken breast for tomorrow’s lunch or substitute precooked chicken or sliced chicken or turkey breast from the grocery store. When choosing deli items, go for low-sodium, preservative-free options.
@RobinH- I’m combining them due to my difficulty in weight loss. Seth Roberts actually says things like he can counter the effects of eating chocolate by taking more oil later. I am not miserable, but I have been pretty darn miserable doing things like JennyCraig in the early 90s when people were dropping with gallbladder attacks. I, at least, had the sense to quit that diet when my hair fell out at an alarming rate.
i think your problem is the fruit. in the book it is one thing that is forbidden, fructose has many negitive effects and fruit is non-essensial for your diet as a whole, pick up the protien levels and drop the fruit should help you out
I think that what is attracting me to this diet is the simplicity. You really can’t argue that a diet free of processed foods is better for your body! I like that there really is no complicated formula or point system to follow, no tracking – just eating the right foods! The way nature intended. The Paleo Diet has been interesting to me for a while, the notion of relying less on processed and packaged foods is liberating!
Both the ketogenic and Paleo diets will promote weight loss, but keeping it off is a different story. Once you start eating carbs again, you run the risk of weight gain. The better dietary solution is a balanced meal plan that includes healthy foods and smaller portions.
Banana Nut Muffins – Want an easy breakfast? Make these muffins the night before and they’ll be waiting for you when you wake up. It’s handy to have breakfast ready when you wake up, and if you have a busy morning or a lazy morning, having a muffin ready to greet you is a treat. Never underestimate the power of a breakfast that makes you feel good, even if it’s “just a muffin”.
Dinner should consist of lots of vegetables, a small amount of lean protein, a starch such as a yam, rice, or whole grain bread or pasta, and a piece of dark chocolate, some fruit or yogurt for dessert.
Thanks for your advice Katherine. I’ve been intrigued by the Roberts/Guyenet approach, but honestly what they are suggesting sounds like punishment. it’s one thing to eat simply, but no salt on your meat? Getting your fat from plain MCT oil? Going this far to reduce palatability sounds really depressing and reminds me of how I used to treat myself when I had a severe eating disorder many years ago. Are you able to still feel joy and delight in life while eating like this? Because if not, I don’t think it’s healthy regardless of whether you lose weight. I’m curious about your experience though, so thanks for posting.
The dish below is a modified version of Bi Bim Bab (Pi Bim Bab). You can see the Korean style by putting “Bi Bim Bab” into the search enging and click “image”. It is one of the healthiest dishes in the world, almost nobody who eats right in S. Korea is overweigth! I added some of my favorite vegetables because it is hard to find theirs in the USA.
