This is called the Food Reward Hypothesis. Basically it goes like this: the foods available in the modern world are more intensely stimulating than anything our brains evolved to deal with. Most people innately find certain tastes and textures (sweetness, saltiness, crunchiness…) pleasurable; this pleasure is called food reward. Highly processed foods overwhelm our brains with a level of food reward that they simply can’t handle, creating a kind of food addiction and throwing our natural taste for healthy foods completely out of balance.
I recommend Saturdays as your “Dieters Gone Wild” day. I am allowed to eat whatever I want on Saturdays, and I go out of my way to eat ice cream, Snickers, Take 5, and all of my other vices in excess. I make myself a little sick and don’t want to look at any of it for the rest of the week. Paradoxically, dramatically spiking caloric intake in this way once per week increases fat loss by ensuring that your metabolic rate (thyroid function, etc.) doesn’t downregulate from extended caloric restriction. That’s right: eating pure crap can help you lose fat. Welcome to Utopia.

The most obvious benefit of the Paleo diet is weight loss. This occurs naturally – and without you having to count calories or combining foods – because the diet asks you to cut sugars and processed foods. Highly-processed foods are the main culprit of today’s obesity epidemic, according to the World Health Organization.
What’s the difference? The strategy they’ve implemented to follow through on it! Sure, some people can completely overhaul their diet and go “cold turkey” on giving up processed foods, grains, and sugar, and never look back.
I am 14 years old and i weigh 190 pounds. I sometimes walk 3 miles and then sometimes i just stop getting active. I am doing fencing as a school sport though. The big problem I am having is just eating. And just when I finish excercising i would be like ok good job dont eat junk food, then i just let myself go. I also want to know what to eat at school for lunch, a sandwhich pasta or what? Because I would like to keep my diet nice and everything. Could you please help me with what to eat, thank you

I also want to say thank you for giving me the impetus to DO something. So often I read a diet book or a blog and think “yah, I should do that. Sounds hard though. Who am I kidding? I’ll never do that.” But what Tim is describing makes me think “That I could do.”
i think that approach might be needed only to a small percentage of people who hit a plateau and still needs to lose weight. for most of us it is not needed to be so strict. and you’d be surprised that enjoyment in life does not come food alone 🙂 it is very well possible to have a lot of enjoyment in life without getting it from food. especially if giving up pleasure from food gives you back your health and rids you of excess body fat. try to explain it to a drug addict that life can be beautiful without drugs too. he likely won’t believe you. but we all know it is true. same goes for enjoyment from food. Life can be good without it too.

It gave me the right motivation. I did have a question.. How much calories should I be eating some calculators tell me 2,000 some tell me 1,200. I currently weight 185 pounds 5’2″ in height. I am having a very hard time losing fat. I don’t want to say weight because it doesn’t matter but if I am losing fat my clothes should feel lose and not the same. I crossfit 4-5 times a week.

47 male. Cardio said my heart is slightly enlarged. I had high BP and cholesterol that required meds. No longer take them due to weight loss/lifestyle changes. Now both are normal. Will my heart decrease?
seriously……..4,000 calories worth of exercise per week? you’re kidding, right???? who has time to workout that much? i workout 4-5 days/week and that totals anywhere from 1800-2400 calories burned. i do a mix of bootcamp and crossfit, and it kicks my ass. i’m 5’4 and weigh about 140-145. i’m trying to get back down to 125-130 but i’m not going to kill myself by trying to burn that many calories a week. that’s insane!!!!!
My daughter had been after me to follow a Paleo eating style for GI issues. After seeing positive results with her change in her eating style, I gave it a try. I lost 12 pounds in 4 months, it was easy. I didn’t change my eating style to lose weight, but it was an added benefit. The problem I have is that I live in a small rural area and to shop for organic foods/health food stores, I have to travel 2 hours. I do the best I can to shop for my eating style in my small community. Soon, the Farmers Market will start up and I also planted a garden. I started with eliminating my morning toast – I have not eaten breads or refined sugars at all, with the exception of an occasional glass of wine. I do not miss the breads or sugars. This will be my lifestyle, my gut feels much better. I just have to learn to portion my food better.
A piece of saltine cracker contains 13 calories. So just try to use the substitute with the same number of calories. Rice cake is your best bet for this purpose. Other close substitutes are plain toast and whole grain cereal. But, be sure about the calorie count.

Thank you for this post. I typically do a modified paleo and do okay- ie I eat some raw milk cheese and those KIND bars. Recently while traveling I ballooned and had to be at a wedding and was surprised when my dress was too tight. I’d had two KIND bars 2 days in a row (4 total) Angry and frustrated as you can imagine esp since I struggle with my weight I often feel like giving up this paleo- any carbs and I balloon. But I feel better overall and want to keep doing it, I do need to find better travel solutions. Any suggestions would be great. I try to eat organic grass fed meats but I also had to eat sausage and eggs from McDonald’s at the airport one day. You just never know what hidden sugars are in these foods. Let me know what people do for Paleo when you’re traveling and can’t eat at a proper restaraunt let alone prep your own foods. Thanks
Something I’d like to point out as well is that recent studies have shown that the saturated fat in eggs and diary does NOT raise your risk of heart attack and stroke. They do raise LDL levels, but the LDL molecules are larger and don’t pose any risk.
