I just ordered your book on Amazon. I eat Paleo and have lost quite a bit of weight over the last year. I used to run a lot, but I found training for my last half marathon was taxing and stalled my weight loss. I am leaning towards strength exercise and less cardio (shorter runs). I like the Jillian Michaels Body Revolution Program. I did it a few years ago. Do you think this program will help or hurt my continued weight loss, leaning out, efforts? It is 6 days a week, 30 minutes each, consisting of 4 strength workouts and 2 cardio workouts. I tend to be the kind of person who needs a regimented routine so having a program just helps. What do you think?

The diet industry reacted defensively, arguing that the participants had lost weight too fast or ate the wrong kinds of food — that diets do work, if you pick the right one.
I agree that the number of calories consumed should be less than burned for weight loss and calculating, weighing, counting, tracking is the only way to be fully aware of how many you’re consuming. I’ve never allowed myself to gain more than 10-15 lbs throughout my adult life (I’m 54) except during my 4 pregnancies. I always took off weight by doing what I stated above . Something changed about 8 years ago. I find it extremely difficult and tedious to track everything I eat. I’ve tried Fitness Pal, Weight Watchers, Sparkpeople, food journals and more. Those are all great tools but very difficult/time consuming to stick with. I found myself planning every single morsel. I was not able to lose any of the 10 lbs I’d like to drop because as soon as 3 dropped, 4 came back on. I have been yo-yo-ing like this for 6 yrs!!!! So discouraging! On Paleo, I eat strictly what hunter gatherers would eat. My meals are bigger than before and i eat whenever I am hungry. The first 4 lbs have come off within 8 days without even trying. The difference? This is the easiest, tastiest, most nourishing way of eating for me since my kids were little. I track nothing. I follow the guidelines of what is allowed and what to avoid. I look forward to each meal and never feel as if I’m on a diet. To continue losing I will have to shrink my portions and not eat so close to bedtime, but compared to tracking, that is super easy to do. My body (and brain) are thanking me for no longer “abusing” them by calculating every single bite that passes my lips. Perhaps my body has been reset, as they say. Perhaps I have accepted that at 5’9″ weighing 161 lbs is not that bad because for the first time in 6 years, I feel GREAT! I encourage everyone to at least give Paleo an honest try.

Angela, During my first paleo challenge, I was always calling my crossfit trainer freaking out because I hadn’t lost any weight. She told me I wouldn’t lose anything until after the 30 days was up, and she was right!! Also, I was advised to take a before picture, and take measurements because it’s hard to gauge weight loss using a scale sometimes. Scales can be very misleading, especially if you are working out and gaining muscle. After the 30 days, I was shocked at how much thinner I looked! Don’t give up!! Push through, the weight loss will come.

i think that approach might be needed only to a small percentage of people who hit a plateau and still needs to lose weight. for most of us it is not needed to be so strict. and you’d be surprised that enjoyment in life does not come from food alone 🙂 it is very well possible to have a lot of enjoyment in life without getting it from food. especially if giving up pleasure from food gives you back your health and rids you of excess body fat. try to explain it to a drug addict that life can be beautiful without drugs too. he likely won’t believe you. but we all know it is true. same goes for enjoyment from food. Life can be good without it too.
Jonathan Bailor didn’t try to refute the observation that we’re eating more. What he said was that given that we know we’re eating more, the calorie ‘math’ would lead us to expect to be much more overweight than we are. He’s not saying we’re not eating more, but that the simplistic treatment of calories leads to the wrong predictions.

Most people don’t realize just how important sleep is for losing weight! For example, a 2009 study linked shortened sleep duration to weight gain, and a 2012 study linked lack of sleep with increased hunger. I personally think that getting enough sleep every night will give you a ton of other benefits too (e.g., my skin gets dramatically clearer when I continuously sleep enough, and I’m able to make better food decisions when I’m not tired).
