If you really want to drive yourself mad, go read a mainstream article that’s either pro or against the Paleo Diet. In the comments, you’ll find a bunch of dietitians yelling back and forth at each other citing different studies and sources and then calling each other wackjobs.
But within five minutes of speaking with Petronella Ravenshear (the Metabolic Balance nutritionist advising me on my #StellaShapeUp plan) she was able to the problem: my metabolism doesn’t work.
I believe in a different approach, and that’s having a strategic blueprint to follow that allows you to SLOWLY adapt your diet in specific ways so that your body adjusts comfortably to a new lifestyle.
Re. exercise: not entirely necessary, but if you feel the need, focus on a combo of 80% low-intensity (i.e. walking) and 20% high-intensity (bodyweight training, all-out efforts (whether it be running, swimming, cross-trainer, cycling)). Should see good results.
Some experts argue that instead of dieting leading to long-term weight gain, the relationship goes in the other direction: People who are genetically prone to gain weight are more likely to diet. To test this idea, in a 2012 study, researchers followed over 4,000 twins aged 16 to 25. Dieters were more likely to gain weight than their non-dieting identical twins, suggesting that dieting does indeed increase weight gain even after accounting for genetic background. The difference in weight gain was even larger between fraternal twins, so dieters may also have a higher genetic tendency to gain. The study found that a single diet increased the odds of becoming overweight by a factor of two in men and three in women. Women who had gone on two or more diets during the study were five times as likely to become overweight.

A lot of people are in “fat denial,” says Irene Rubaum Keller, R.D. author of Foodaholic: The Seven Stages to Permanent Weight Loss. “They don’t get on scale, they buy stretchy clothes, they hide in the back of pictures—things that stop them from owning up to their weight.” Getting on the scale can stop the denial. “It may not help you lose weight, but may really stop you from gaining weight,” she says.
DASH was invented by the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and promotes six to eight servings of grains, four to five of vegetables or fruits, six of lean meat (chicken or fish), nuts or seeds, and two to three servings of fats. Each serving is small; for example, 1oz (28gm) of meat or 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil. Sodium is capped at around half a teaspoon. Studies show that the diet, particularly when accompanied by exercise, reduces weight and blood pressure. The experts say it is easy to follow and you will feel full on it.

Get involved in a sport. The great part about sports is that they’re competitive. Competition makes us push ourselves harder than we would have by ourselves, for the most part. You may be thinking: I’m not good at any sports, or I’m not comfortable doing any sports. Just remember that people respect other who try hard and who respect themselves. If you think doing soccer, basketball, or swimming would be fun and keep you engaged, then go for it. Let your competitive streak burn the calories for you.
About 7 months ago I started my diet. I begin by consuming NO CARBS for two weeks to kick start things. I also fast one day a week. Fasting is no big deal and once you get used to it and you kind of look forward to your “fast” day. I went from 218 to 198 and then I kind of went off the diet.
Not trying to be anti-paleo – I’ll probably try that some day too. But for now, I was just way too intrigued by a diet that seems geared toward anti-depressant weight loss. It’s different than basic weight gain.
Thank you so much for this article. I truly believe that messages come to me when I most need them. I was feeling particularly down today about my results since going Paleo several months ago. What hit me most was what you said about exercising too much (and about eating 1,000 calories of cashews in a day — glad I am not alone!). As a six day a week exerciser I’m not sure I can go down to 3 days a week, but I will experiment for the next 30 days cutting down my workouts to 4x a week. Now, what to do with all that free time?
Having grown up in France, where bread is its own food group, I got very depressed when I was told that, in order to address my auto-immune condition, I had to go gluten-free, and beyond that, grain-free, dairy-free, and starchy vegetables-free… It most certainly is a very restrictive diet, and I thought I’d never be able to enjoy food again. I went into it kicking and screaming. No joke. NO ONE was more surprised than me that, after following this diet for 8 months, not only do I feel much better, but I do not feel deprived *at all*! It really is possible to make very tasty food on this diet. It did require discipline at the beginning, and it is more expensive and more time consuming, but I’ve always cooked anyway (I’m French, after all!) and my efforts are repaid ten-fold in improvements in my health. I consider it an investment of sorts 🙂
I do agree that our food nowadays is crap! Its a shame that it takes a part time job to afford high quality organic foods but its now getting to the point that with GMO we might not even be able to avoid it even with our best intentions. Yea, its scary scary stuff and its all based on greed.

One easy way to put a speed bump between you and your plate is to try different utensils. Chopsticks will slow most Americans down, but if you don’t have pair handy, try simply switching your fork to your non-dominant hand. You’ll have to concentrate harder before each bite and will pay more attention to your food. Try these other mindful eating tricks to further draw your attention to what’s entering your mouth.
Most American plates are 11 or 12 inches wide. If you stick to a plate that is nine or 10 inches wide, however, Dr. Wansink says you can cut about 23 percent off the amount you serve yourself (and eat.) “It’s a mindlessly easy way to cut things down,” he says.
For example, many grains and lentils use phytates; oxilates and phylates kind of like storage walls to keep the oils, the minerals and the proteins – in separate compartments. These chemical families are destroyed by water allowing the compartment-held nutrients to mix …. we call this germination of seeds during spring rains. Our Paleo ancestors ate only seasonally based food … ate their animal-based-foods, gestated during winter months and like-all-animals often nearly starved and ate a mild ketosis-type diet. Life is so much different!!! Our ‘oils-in-diet was only fat/blubber/ from-marine-animals and only from avocadoes walnut, tree-nuts … there were no cold-pressed organic anything.. For many folk those three can cause digestive trouble … and kill-the-plant-enemy(us and we call these staples)) … by introducing a food that will cause fat deposits.
Root vegetables will be your primary source of carbs on a paleo diet. They help fill the caloric deficit left by off-limit foods like bread and grains. Sweet potatoes, taro, cassava and potatoes are ideal choices. Add root vegetables to any meal that’s lacking calories. For example, adding 2 cups of sliced taro gives your meal 375 calories, 13 grams of protein and 91 grams of carbohydrates. Cooking root vegetables is effortless if you use a steamer, pressure cooker or slow cooker. Steaming will cook most root vegetables in less than 20 minutes and pressure cooking in even less time. Alternately, you can put them in a slow cooker for several hours with broth and seasonings.
