I don’t think that I would do very well with this diet. I prefer to eat the majority of my calories through bread, pasta and rice. I have about a 5.5% body fat, and weigh about 140-145 pounds most of the year. I do run a lot, as well as cross train a lot; any time that I stop workout out, I lose weight too fast and have trouble getting it back. I like the concept, though, and will certainly plan some meals around it.
And if there’s something not-so-healthy you find that you just don’t miss very much? No one says you have to eat it again. Getting to know your body better is one of Whole30’s biggest benefits. So go ahead and reap those rewards.
Except paleo is not a diet but a lifestyle. And a very individual one too. My paleo is different from yours is different from his/hers. Diets inevitably fail on the long. No such threat on paleo. Paleo should be called the “Don’t eat foods that harm you, only eat foods that nourish your body and support your health” diet. Which ones are those? Nobody will give you a ready made free answer, because there is none. Everybody has to put in some effort and time to educate himself and find his answers. Or pay someone to guide him if he can’t do it alone. There is no free lunch and no free health either. If it was that easy, we’d all be healthy and beautiful, right? No matter what the individual specifics of each person, most ill health and excess weight has a common cause – ignorance. The only way out is through self improvement and education. This site is a good place to start.

I love bread too! And I still eat it sometimes- albeit gluten free- (also Hashimotos) and I live in Portland which is apparently the gluten free capital of the world, so I eat delicious GF french bread, that tastes like real french bread…but I digress. What I really wanted to say is: that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, we are all really different and it works for some people to eat grains, etc. I would suggest soaking them in an acid (like lemon or vinegar in the water) to get the most nutrients out of your grains. Remember that the people who lost weight in the study were the people who were highly motivated and committed to the plan. So can you lose weight without a diet? You may be able to if you really stick to your program.

Unfortunately, this advice rarely works because the brain has powerful mechanisms for overriding our efforts to lose weight. If you consciously reduce the number of calories you eat, your body responds by lowering your metabolism to match your reduced intake. So as you purposefully eat less calories, your body finds ways to use less calories. All while ramping up hormones that raise your appetite and drive you to eat more at every meal to regain the fat you’ve lost.
I also gained weight on Paleo and I was hungry all the time. I felt miserable and had no energy for my workouts and yoga. As soon as I added grains back in, the symptoms and the weight went away. I am accustomed to being fit, so this was not acceptable to me. I think if we base our diets on whole, real foods and get away from mainstream processed junk, the particulars of what we eat simply vary depending on each person’s own unique physiology.
Other staples to stock up on include: milk alternatives (coconut and almond milk) and healthy fats, such as avocado oil, coconut oil, walnut and sesame oil and olive oil – especially cold-pressed olive oil. Aside from obvious fresh meats, you should also look for additional sources of protein. That will keep things interesting so you have more options when it’s time to cook.

I have decided that every other weekend I am going have a paleo treat food. A paleo chocolate cake tasted l like heaven to me, though my husband and kids had to put real icing on it to enjoy. I froze the rest of the cake.
no, paleo is not a high fat diet, this is not ketogenics which is dangerous for diabetics. Paleo is a high protein (high meaning your larger macro %) moderate fats, and picky carbs (carbs from plants, particularly with high fiber content). Sylina is correct about protein breaking down into glucose if there is too much of a surplus though.

There’s a funny thing that happens during my paleo reset programs. Most people start off with an initial goal to shed weight. Maybe it’s just a few kilos, maybe it’s a few stone. Regardless, it’s a wildly popular goal. That’s not the funny part, though.
