When people try to diet, they try to restrict themselves, which often leads to overeating. They cut out food groups which make those food groups more desirable to them. They think too much about short-term goals and don’t think about sustainable changes. But if you are going to lose weight, you have to change your behaviors for the rest of your life or otherwise you gain it back. That’s not a sexy message because it seems daunting.
Sounds great, but eating the same 3-4 meals cycle after cycle is going to get BORING! Also, what do you have to say about the idea that men’s metabolic rates generally allow them to lose weight faster/easier? Thanks.
I’ve been doing very well, but still feel the whole thing is very “loose”/informal. I’m not viewing this as a diet, but as a lifestyle- but I’d still like to have some order in my life and actually know which paleo foods I can and can’t be eating to start with. For example, I read nuts and some fruits were okay, but after consuming three granny smiths over the past week and several handfulls of nuts (cashews and almonds), I read it’s ideally best to leave these things (nuts and fruits) out for the first bit of the diet. Moderation is something I never knew in my previous life so restraining myself to just a few nuts is hard so it’s for that reason I’m thinking to cut them out altogether- with me it’s all or nothing.
Next, this is not an all meat diet or uber-low carb diet like Atkins. The biggest component of the Paleo Diet? Vegetables! Every meal in a true Paleo diet has a moderate amount of healthy (properly raised chicken, grass-fed beef, hormone free, etc.) meat combined with nutritious veggies or a moderate amount of fruit.
Angela, During my first paleo challenge, I was always calling my crossfit trainer freaking out because I hadn’t lost any weight. She told me I wouldn’t lose anything until after the 30 days was up, and she was right!! Also, I was advised to take a before picture, and take measurements because it’s hard to gauge weight loss using a scale sometimes. Scales can be very misleading, especially if you are working out and gaining muscle. After the 30 days, I was shocked at how much thinner I looked! Don’t give up!! Push through, the weight loss will come.
If you sit down and take the time to plan out your meals you are more likely to stick to it, because you took the time to do it. You’ll find it’s easier to stay on plan knowing you have a yummy meal coming up later today, and you’ll be less likely to splurge knowing you have a plan to follow.
Plan Ahead: Make the Maple-Nut Granola for tomorrow. You can also buy granola, to make things easier. Aim for a granola that has around 130 calories or less and less than 6 grams of sugar per 1/4 cup.
You could also “make your own version” of the Paleo diet. you don’t want to, don’t exclude grain products but try to limit processed foods like fake meats, pizzas, maybe white bread? Just bring more variation by adding more vegetables and fruits to your diet (eggs if you’re not vegan) and limiting added sugar, instead of limiting grain products. No one says you have to be 100% strict Paleo to see positive results, there’s a lot of people who don’t exclude dairy or beans from their Paleo diet
I’m not going to lie. I spend a hell of a lot of time in the kitchen. So much so that I have set my laptop up on the kitchen counter so I can watch episodes of The Voice while I cook. I try to do as much work ahead of time as possible, for example, when I make dinner I usually make enough for 4 meals. Then I freeze the rest and can pull it out and defrost it another time.
Spaghetti Squash Shrimp Scampi – Enjoy the full flavor of shrimp scampi without worrying that you’re ruining your diet plan. This is a way to have a restaurant quality dinner in the comfort of your home and not wonder what’s in your food or how it was made. Quality control is an important part of the Paleo diet concept, and learning to make delicious food is key to your success.
well these are all of my concerns at the moment i hope you can answer these questions soon because i really want to lose weight , and if you dont think this diet is suitable please recommend 1 that is
Fancy coffee drinks from trendy coffee joints often pack several hundred calories, thanks to whole milk, whipped cream, sugar, and sugary syrups. A cup of regular coffee with skim milk has just a small fraction of those calories. And when brewed with good beans, it tastes just as great. You can also try nonfat powdered milk in coffee. You’ll get the nutritional benefits of skim milk, which is high in calcium and low in calories. And, because the water has been removed, powdered milk doesn’t dilute the coffee the way skim milk does. Try these other calorie-free coffee hacks to wean off the bad stuff.
Popularized by Dr. Loren Cordain, who wrote The Paleo Diet in 2002, Paleo aims to get rid of all things processed including grains, dairy, legumes and refined sugar. The only items on the menu are foods that can be “hunted and gathered” like meat, poultry, fruits and vegetables.

What is a low carb diet, really? When can a low carb diet be beneficial? Should everyone follow a low carb diet? Or, can a low carb diet ruin your health? After reading this eBook, you’ll be able to understand the many factors that play into how a person handles a low carbohydrate diet, and whether or not their health will improve on such a plan.
I hope the results are still positive. I also weight train and would like to preserve as much muscle as possible during my cut. I’m 190 now, looking to be around 175…then build up with excess calories using the modified mass building side of this program…we’ll see how it goes.
Carbohydrates are also a source of energy. But that doesn’t mean you keep taking sugary foods as they are high in calories as well. To add carbohydrates you need to take it from unrefined and complex carbs such as fruit, whole grains, and non-starchy vegetables. It maintains a healthy weight and stabilizes blood sugar.
I’m puzzled about “eating enough” vs. “intermittent fasting”. Since the advice to lose weight with Paleo is always to make sure you’re eating enough, yet on another front, experts say intermittent fasting is helpful for weight loss, how does your metabolism not slow down when you’re fasting versus just eating less when it’s the same thing? Definitely confusing.
You’ve heard of a self-fulfilling prophecy? If you keep focusing on things you can’t do, like resisting junk food or getting out the door for a daily walk, chances are you won’t do them. Instead (whether you believe it or not) repeat positive thoughts to yourself. “I can lose weight.” “I will get out for my walk today.” “I know I can resist the pastry cart after dinner.” Repeat these phrases and before too long, they will become true for you. Try these other daily mantras that can help you reach your goals.
Hi! It’s been a while since this post, so I hope you were successful. As a nurse, I had a few questions and concerns when I read this. Here is the thing- it is never a good idea to go “only” anything. You husband needs to first adapt to the lack of processed food and so forth. Add in more green vegetables(not iceberg lettuce) and the occasional whole fruit. He should cut back on his carbs in general, but as a diabetic, he should not eliminate them entirely, especially right at the beginning. This can be quite a shock to the system and can really mess up his blood sugar. I am actually surprised the doctor told him this, or maybe he misunderstood? An all protein diet is hard on many body systems, especially the kidneys, and a diabetic frequently already has compromised kidney function. What he should concentrate on is fiber rich, low sugar foods and a balanced plate. He also needs to increase his activity level. It might just mean getting up and walking around the house more at first, but I would definitely recommend weight training for diabetics and 20-30 minutes of cardio about twice a week, as this will address both insulin resistance and elevated cholesterol, which is also common in type 2 diabetics. I would encourage you to look at this as a marathon, not a sprint. Once his blood sugars and insulin levels even out, the weight loss will come more easily and quickly. That will take some time, so don’t give up!
Skip the fad diets. This won’t be long lasting results for you. There are many options for this. Like an example, if you take in 1,050 to 1,200 calories a day, and then exercise for 1hr/day, then you could lose 5 pounds in the 1 week or 2nd week, or more if your weight is more than 250 pounds. Don’t cut the calories too much, it is dangerous, and could get into trouble long-term.
You most certainly can! All you have to do is eat enough food. Make sure you’re eating enough fat from healthy sources such as coconut oil, avocado oil and olive oil as well as nuts and seeds. Eat plenty of high quality protein and enough starchy carbs such as potatoes, plantains, winter squash and parsnips, to maintain your weight. Here’s an article that goes into more detail, http://www.paleoplan.com/2011/03-23/qa-gaining-weight-on-paleo/.
