I’m doing basically phase I of Atkins currently and recently broke through a plateu. I’ve lost 20 pounds in the last month, giving me a grand total of 37 pounds lost in the last 6 months. I’ve only been going at it serious for the last month, though.

I do get a bit ticked at the “You didn’t gain it over night” remark. Three out of the four times I’ve gained/regained weight it was to the tune of 40lbs in three months. This is just a bit over 3lbs a week. Yes, I really did gain it over night.

Avocados, nuts, seeds, coconut oil and other sources of fats add significant calories to paleo diets. Fat has nine calories per gram, as opposed to the four calories per gram in carbohydrates or protein. Adding fat to every meal is easy and often makes them tastier. For example, cook chicken in coconut oil, sprinkle nuts and seeds on salads or eat an avocado with breakfast; a whole, 7-ounce avocado has 322 calories, 4 grams of protein and 29.5 grams of mostly heart-healthy fats.

All of this sounds intruiging, but what about substiuting the bread for a corn or flower tortilla, making a wrap or a buritto or sorts, and eat with tomato based salsa? I do not know about you, but A diet with tortillas and salsa could never get boring.

Hi Jessie – it’s hard to say because it does depend on what else you eat. I would suggest tracking your meals for a few days to see how much fat, protein, carbohydrates (as well as calories) that you’re taking in as we often estimate our own food intake badly. You might also get an idea about your vitamin and mineral intake too, which is really important!

I eat a paleo diet, but I eat a lot of vegetables. In fact, I eat more vegetables than the vast majority of “vegetarians” I know. I also eat a fair amount of starches. I can walk into darn near any restaurant and find plenty to eat while still staying on plan.

On my cheat day I don’t go crazy with the cake and ice cream, but I just eat the carbs I like the most. This Sunday I had oatmeal, bananas and raisins and a bagel for breakfast. For lunch I had a sandwich, and for dinner sushi.

Another major benefit of the Paleo diet is that it contains lots of healthy, omega-3 rich fats. These are the fats found in nuts, seeds and fish. Unsaturated fats are good for your heart, and can help lower the levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Although you’ll be eating saturated fats (from eggs and meats) as well, chances are you won’t be consuming as much as most people do. Why? Because dairy is one of the main sources of saturated fat in the American diet, and the Paleo diet bans dairy products.
