Those following the Whole30 diet give up sugar, artificial sweeteners, grains, dairy, legumes, and alcohol for 30 loooooong days. That means the vast majority of packaged foods—from cookies to ketchup—are out, as is your nightly glass of red wine. Foods that are typically considered pretty darn good-for-you, like quinoa, hummus, and Greek yogurt, are also no-gos.
When you’ve kicked the soda habit or simply made it through the day without overeating, pat yourself on the back. WAYHOME studio/ShutterstockTaste, smell, and sight are all considered hugely important when it comes to eating, but another sense could be making a difference in whether or not you overeat, according to a study done by Brigham Young University. “Sound is typically labeled as the forgotten food sense,” explained Ryan Elder, PhD, an assistant professor of marketing at BYU’s Marriott School of Management and co-author of the paper. “When you mask the sound of consumption, like when you watch TV while eating, you take away one of those senses, and it may cause you to eat more than you would normally. The effects many not seem huge but over the course of a week, month, or year, it could really add up.” His advice? Turn off the TV, radio, music, and other noise, and focus on the melodic tones of crunching, slurping, and satisfied sighs.
The paleo diet is an amazing place to start on a journey to the best version of yourself, but there is SO. MUCH. MORE. that goes into it. It’s not just about the diet, here. The paleo lifestyle encompasses so many facets of life, and all those habits could be the reason you’re not seeing the results you’d like to see.
The big one is exercise. Nobody’s saying you have to run marathons or do Crossfit to lose weight or exercise properly. For example, in my 4-Week Paleo Reset, I get people to stick to simple fitness challenges every week. It could be as simple as a quick 20-minute work out at home or some cycling and a few squats and push ups. You could easily boost weight loss with daily, low-impact movement as simple as walking! Another big contender is sleep. If you’re not sleeping enough, your body simply isn’t performing at its peak, and it might resist shedding extra weight. Finally, it’s important to manage stress. Feeling run-down all the time encourages our desire to eat for comfort, and it raises cortisol levels which might aid our bodies in resisting weight loss.
