Hi Chis, I just turned 13. I know about this diet because my dad lost 45 lbs from it and I stay on low-carbs because of “sugar reasons”…eat proteins such as all the: steaks, eggs, chicken, salads, veggies, pork grinds (kind of like chips), cheese sticks, hot dogs (pork) you want! Then always count the carbs and calories on your food item. Remember, NO SUGAR! Many say to eat fruits…..don’t! Also, make sure you drink water, crystal light, diet soda and teas (or anything else you find that is diet). When you want a little something sweet to….let’s say coffee….add Splenda and less milk.

And yeah, counting calories–actually monitoring everything you can about what you’re putting into your body and how your body responds–is a *really* good idea! (But psst! “fewer” calories. 😉 They are notoriuosly counted, after all.)

慢食:平時就餐時減慢進食速度,可以達到減肥目的。日本研究者中村經過觀察,發現同樣的食物同樣的量,肥胖男子用8~10分鐘吃完,而消瘦者卻用13~16分鐘吃完,另外他還對食物進行了咀嚼次數調查,肥胖男子需要7.7次,肥胖女子需要8.1次,而普通男子需要8.9次,普通女子需要9.4次。隨後他又用減慢進食速度進行減肥試驗,結果發現,肥胖男子經過19周,體重減輕4公斤,肥胖女子經過20周,體重減輕4.5公斤。因此中村指出,食物進入人體,血糖就要升高;當血糖升高一定水平,大腦食慾中樞發出停止進食信號時,往往已經吃了過多的食物。所以快食會引起肥胖。若減慢進食的速度,則可有效地控制食量,起到減肥作用。所以在吃飯時要細嚼慢咽。

值得一提的是,推廣限醣飲食減肥的日本作家桐山秀樹,他著有《不吃主食,一週速瘦六公斤》,但是於2016年年頭,卻因急性心肌梗塞猝死!而根據美國心臟學會指出,如椰子油、牛油等高飽和脂肪酸的食物,看來好像健康,但其實會會增加動脈粥狀硬化、心肌梗塞甚至中風的風險,而桐山秀樹的死是否直接與此有關,當然未有明顯證據,但是在控制飲食方面,最好也要留意自己的身體狀況,一句到尾,老土一點說,無論實行甚麼類型的減肥法,都應該同時向你的家庭醫生咨詢意見,及定時監察身體狀況!

And while some say Paleo is expensive because of the cost of organics and pastured raised animal protein, I do what I can do. If I can’t afford organic, then I don’t buy organic. It’s still a better choice than sugar laden, processed garbage that destroys my gut health. You have to make the best choices you can, and for me, an autoimmune former vegetarian, I have found Paleo to be a godsend. I’m healthier now than I was being a vegetarian. My allergies have subsided, my waistline has shrunk, my inflammation is under control, my cholesterol has dropped, and I haven’t had a cold, sore throat or the flu since I started eating this way. And I teach at a public school! I averaged 2-3 illnesses a year prior to Paleo. So don’t buy into the misconceptions out there about Paleo. Do the research yourself & make the best decision for YOU. Everyone is different. We have to remember that a one-size-fits all approach doesn’t work.

I’ve been on this diet for about a week now, but the biggest problem I have is the no beer rule. I know Tim does have wine, but I’d love to know exactly why beer is off limits? Not to mention the fact that dark beer is also rich in anti-oxidants. So I guess I’m just trying self-justify drinking Guinness in place of red wine. Both options are hard to swallow for a craft beer nut like myself, but Guinness is the lesser of both evils to me. Does this pass muster, chemically/nutritionally?

Aah. Good question. No one ever talks about this one. Honestly, I lost a lot of friends. I’m sure my mother-in-law thought I had an eating disorder at the time and I know some of my girlfriends were talking about me behind my back, saying that I was compulsively exercising and anorexic. Since they had never been able to sustain any type of healthy weight loss themselves, I had to be doing something illicit. When someone has amazing success in an area that you yourself have not, it can highlight your failures and make you feel bad about yourself. A lot of people – okay a lot of women (let’s be honest) – will revert to subversive measures, i.e. gossip and backstabbing, to make themselves feel better about themselves. It was hard, but I lost a lot of friends. Also, those people who were happy for me now found me to be a huge pain in the ass when it came to outings, like going out for dinner. I can’t just grab a burger anymore. There needs to be attention paid to what restaurants I frequent and that requires planning. I don’t think that I would do very well with this diet. I prefer to eat the majority of my calories through bread, pasta and rice. I have about a 5.5% body fat, and weigh about 140-145 pounds most of the year. I do run a lot, as well as cross train a lot; any time that I stop workout out, I lose weight too fast and have trouble getting it back. Hi! I’ve been eating Paleo for 5 weeks now. I’m 5’6 and weighed 144 when I started and now weigh 137. I am breastfeeding and I eat just 1 fruit a day. I want to lose more weight but I’ve been stuck at 137 for 3 weeks now. I have lost 1 inch each week off my waist but the scale doesn’t budge. Could it be that my body is just toning up and I don’t need to be much thinner? I still have some fat around my mid section I’m not happy with.

It’s high in protein and fiber—and anyone who’s ever tried to lose weight has been told that the secrets to slimming down are protein and fiber, which take longer to transit down the digestive system making us feel fuller longer. Processed carbohydrates, on the other hand, zip through our system making us hungry seeminly minutes after we’ve put down the fork.

Is the Paleo plan okay if you are breastfeeding? I think calcium is one of the things you are supposed to get alot of and since no dairy, what would you suggest? (sorry i’m still new to this) I think i am going to start this plan this week!

This is my fourth week on Paleo. I lost 11 pounds in the first three weeks and was so excited. I gained back 5 pounds this week. I feel so discouraged. I have to take into account that my period is coming. But 5 pounds! Praying it is water weight. I was so happy with this diet and I do feel so much better. I work out 1 hour a day for 5 days. I have one cheat day but only for a dinner out with my boyfriend. The rest of the day I eat Paleo. I am sticking with the plan and just crossing my fingers that it is just hormonal. I follow a strick paleo diet. However I have drank a little. Lately I have stopped drinking thrown my body back into detox but I still can’t loose my last 10 pounds I gained. Could it be paleo cooking? I bake quite a bit to keep sugar cravings down because I have a sugar handling disorder and I sometimes still get bad cravings. Help! I feel like I’m stalled.

The diet encourages up to 13lb a week weight loss in the first 2 weeks, which is not sustainable, and is likely to be a lot of water loss rather than true fat loss, which you will regain as soon as you come off the diet.

Here is my story. First of all I apologize for my poor english. I was 290 pounds 2 months ago now as in April 19 i ve managed to get down to 253 with help of paleo.I am an Uber driver do I rarely get out the car mesing that no exercise. Last 2 weeks no matter what i do i cant loose any weight i am stuck at 253-55. I track my foods in MyFitnessPal and i am way under my calorie intake usually 1300 to 1700 cal per day. So i dont know what to do. Any thoughts?

I love your regimen. I am 5ft 6ins and weighs 140lb. Most of the weight is in my stomach. I do not know if this diet would help my stomach or will it take fat off of my entire body. I don’t want to loose weight from any other part of my body because I am skinny as people would say. Do you think that I can loose the fat off of my stomach from this diet? Please advise.

Just remember, it’s suppose to be a soup and not a meal, so you must have enough liquid. Best way, look where your veggies end up before adding the water, then make a visual mark 2 inches higher than the veggies and add your water accordingly to hit that 2 inches above the veggies. Make sense?

Thank you for posting this. I just started paleo 2 weeks ago, but am already getting nervous about hitting a plateau. I have always been an active person, but have laws struggled to be the perfect weight. Now I have an infant, and paleo helped me lose the last couple of pounds to get to pre baby weight, 124 lbs. Today I stepped on the scale and it read 123! I do not think people should look at paleo as a diet, but as a life style change. I wonder why there are so many negative comments on here. Paleo is very realistic and it will definitely help you battle disease..from what I have heard from a lot of people! Keep posting great things and merry Christmas! 😉

Let’s say your daily calorie maintenance level came out to be 3000 calories. To lose 1 pound per week, you need to eat 500 less calories a day. So, in this example you would start to eat 2500 calories per day from now on. Doing so would create a total deficit of 3500 calories a week and therefore cause a weight loss of about 1 pound per week.

I have been a vegetarian for almost three years and few days ago I spoke to a friend that has been on the paleo diet for a few months now. After speaking with her about all of the positive results she has seen so far I decided to change my whole lifestyle and transition into the paleo diet. But if you’re not hungry, then it’s not very “more-ish:” it’s not like a bag of chips, where you can just keep reaching into the bag again and again without ever realizing what you’re doing. I am not miserable, but I have been pretty darn miserable doing things like JennyCraig in the early 90s when people were dropping with gallbladder attacks. I, at least, had the sense to quit that diet when my hair fell out at an alarming rate.

My breakfast this morning was 3 eggs scrambled in tablespoon of butter, Pan fried turkey and 1/4 cup of cheese on the eggs. It really was a large pile. (I know the cheese isn’t a great Paleo input but I was hard pressed to find calories. In the future I’ll add lots of fried greens and cabbage.

If you are already fit and have a low body fat percentage, losing 17 lbs is not advised or healthy. And much tougher to achieve. Meaning, if you’re a woman who’s height is 5’8″ and 125 lbs, don’t expect to lose 17 lbs to fit that little spaghetti black dress better, because you don’t need to do this diet, I’m sure you already make that dress look great at 125 lbs and honestly you could gain a few more lbs in my opinion. Like me for example, if I was 190 lbs and do this diet, I would probably lose 9-11 lbs max because my body fat would not be as high as it is at 220 lbs.

I never eat wheat. Ever. Or anything with wheat in it. I don’t care if it’s sprouted, fermented, fried in tallow or surrounded by cheese. That is the only hard and fast rule I have. You’d be amazed at how many unhealthy options are off the table if I stick to this. I don’t need to have any other rules.

I don’t know why everyone assumes Paleo means high fat. It doesn’t prescribe macro-nutrient percentages. That is highly individual. Some writers get a little prescriptive (like the Jaminets), but they are only one voice among many, and there is a lot of controversy even within Paleo. I think that people are used to diets being clearly defined. If you read a typical diet book, you will know exactly what you need to eat after about ten minutes. Then it either works out for you to eat that diet, or it doesn’t. Paleo shouldn’t be looked at that way. Rather than being a specific diet, it’s an approach to evaluating and designing your diet based on what your body evolved to eat. It isn’t nearly as specific or defined as a lot of people would like to think (which is highly inconvenient, granted, but such is life). Yes, a lot of people somehow equate Paleo to bacon (please), but I think those people are newbies and will probably soon move on to the next sparkly thing that comes along. Paleo demands that you put time and energy into figuring out what works for you, with the excellent guidance of people like Kresser, Sisson, the Jaminets, et al. Personally when I say I eat Paleo, what I mean is that I eat healthy, and that I invest time in figuring out what that means for me. It just happens that the writers who seem to reason the most persuasively in this area identify with the Paleo movement. Don’t throw out the baby with the bathwater if eating the way one blogger recommends doesn’t work for you. Just understand that you might need to tinker with it some more.

I used to eat big complex salads or prepared meat and vegetable dishes. These were pretty high in fat, so I wouldn’t be hungry for a few hours. Eating simple tends to lower the overall fat content, so I find myself munching a lot more. It’s a little annoying, but keeping fruit and snackable veggies around helps lot.

Low-fat foods are often processed foods or what I call “frankfenfoods,” filled with sugar and unnatural ingredients designed to make low-calorie foods taste like their full-fat counterparts. These added ingredients can actually cause weight gain.

As a neuroscientist, I’ve read hundreds of studies on the brain’s ability to fight weight loss. I also know about it from experience. For three decades, starting at age 13, I lost and regained the same 10 or 15 pounds almost every year. The other exciting breakthrough this week was, for the first time in years, I finally felt light enough, and fit enough, to jog a little bit. I was walking home. I felt no pain in my ankles or knees so I just went for it! I jogged around the block without stopping. It was amazing. I can actually imagine getting back to being a fit and active woman.

I have to ask (and am surprised after 63 posts nobody has yet) but if we can at least agree that weight loss is primarily an equation of calories in versus calories spent, (we can, right?) why isn’t there a limit on the number of calories one should limit themselves to? Is it because it’s expected you can’t eat beyond the limit of the calories you need to lose weight when you’re eating 10 cups of spinach to match that old 1/2 cup of rice?

Surprisingly, I have found Mexican food, swapping out rice for vegetables, to be one of the cuisines most conducive to the “slow carb” diet.

Start a calorie journal in which you write down the values of everything you eat. Creating a calorie journal and writing in it consistently will help you know when you’ve gone over your limit. It will tell you what foods worked when and whether they tasted good. It will give you a record of your struggles, which are always fun to look back on after the pain has passed!

If you like citrus, the news gets better. Replacing some of the tea brewing water with citrus juice, such as lemon, lime, orange, or grapefruit, allows your body to use more of the tea’s catechins. I got to my goal weight of 117 and stayed for a while, this year though, after to many “cheats” with popcorn, gluten free crackers, and chocolate for a few months – 6-7 pounds have now creeped back on me, and it seems like no matter what it won’t budge. Following Paleo, no fruit, no sweeteners, no starchy veggies now, i have tried many different combos though, adding back in more starchy carbs and removing them further adding in more fat ect. I don’t understand why at first with Paleo my body responded right away with weight loss, now I that I regained some (I lost 40) it won’t budge! Is it possible our bodies become use to the Paleo and hence are not stacked into weight loss anymore when we stick to it? Is it possible I am to impatient? At first the weight flew off, I mean every week I lost 1-2 pounds.. now after 4 weeks no change on scale HELP.. annoyed 36 year old female.

I know that, “You’re exercising too much to lose weight” may sound counterintuitive, but I actually see this phenomenon a lot, and it happens to me personally. If I exercise too much, I gain weight. It happened when I started doing CrossFit last year, and as soon as I stopped CrossFit, I lost the weight. If you’re exercising more than 3 days a week, I’d ratchet it down to 3 days a week – or even less if you have diagnosed adrenal issues – for a while and see how that goes.

So I’m great at following the rules. I do allow myself one exception – tea with milk but surely that couldn’t stop the whole thing from working? All I drink is tea (milk, no sugar) & water – otherwise lentils, veg, chick peas, soup (without potato), meat, fish, eggs – nothing else (p.s. Are nuts allowed?)

How to Fix It: Think of the Paleo diet as more of a lifestyle change and philosophy. The Paleo food list is full of foods that nature provides and humans used to eat plenty of. The list of foods that are off limits are foods that man invented and that aren’t natural to the body.

I think what you’re not getting is the article is saying the *weightloss* part of eating Paleo is often effortless, because a lot of people lose weight when the cut out the processed junk – I don’t think the article is implying that eating Paleo is easy (though for me it is!!) it is saying that the weight loss part once you make the switch is often without additional effort (calorie counting, exercising etc.). I think you are the one caught up on the semantics!

I was diagnosed with RA as well at age 32. We just lost a full term pregnancy as well due to a complication of identical twins and I don’t want to go on meds due to the toxicity to the body for when we start trying to conceive. I was in a horrible flare right after pregnancy and now (3.5 months later) with all the diet modifications I am doing much better. Still very stiff in the morning and after sitting. But actually just start as well and have seen results. I am making bone broth as well. Dr Mercola speaks of great benefits for RA. This is really a life overhaul going gluten, grain, dairy and soy free. I am walking though so that is improvement!

Now, let me preface this with the notion that adding exercise to a weight loss diet and routine will certainly help you lose some extra pounds, and it will certainly make you more muscular. I found that making simple but tasty Paleo food helps me stick to Paleo and I have lost 12 pounds but want to lose 5 more and can’t seem to lose the last 5. I’ve given up dairy already and find intermittent fasting too hard. I do chi gong to control stress but probably not enough. Will either try less carbs or more movement.

You might even keep a food diary at first to help you learn how much you are eating and whether you’re eating out of habit instead of real hunger. When you are aware of your roadblocks you can plan alternative choices.

I am gaining weight even though I am trying very hard to adapt to paleo. What am I doing wrong? A typical daily menu is 1 tablespoon psyllium husks with 1 tbsp coconut oil, coffee with 2 tbsp cream, 1/2 cup coconut cream with 1 tbsp chia seeds, tea with 2 tbsp coconut cream, 8 almonds, 1 date, 110g ham, 1 piece fruit, 200g salmon, 1/2 cup beans, 1/2 cup cauliflower all with butter, 1/2 cup milk kefir with 1/2 tbsp flaxseed oil, 1/4 cup coconut milk with 1/4 cup milk with cinnamon and nutmeg, 4 glasses of water. Lastly, losing weight takes a lot of focus, time and dedication to accomplish. I’ve seen so many people give up because after a few workouts they aren’t getting the results they want right away. It doesn’t happen overnight!!!!
