Sure, cardio is important. I read that article about if they weren’t high the train wouldn’t have crashed?? seriously you can still test positive from smoking even if you weren’t high that day. I have yo yo’d my whole life and finally got up over 200 again this past February. I eat healthy already (like Paleo/low carb style) even being big but too much at times I will admit. After eight weeks on low carb and then cutting and then cutting again the calories I got so frustrated after barely five pound loss even with some exercise. I have been taking progesterone for about two years so I went back to my doctor. I got my lab results yesterday. No allergies, no food allergies but huge issues with adrenal function, sluggish thyroid, high estrogen, super low vitamin D, high DHEA. On day one of thyroid meds and adrenal supplements as well as vitamin D. I wanna cry finally having some answers because I have felt like a total failure. Go to someone good who specializes in hormones and get a full check up. Seeing the lab results make me realize that no matter what food lifestyle I choose, short of starvation (which I have seriously thought about being this big again) I wouldn’t have lost the weigh. I pray these are the answers for me and maybe they might be for you too Liza.

Why 30 days? That’s the amount of time it takes for your body to reset and start the healing process, the authors say. It’s also enough time to change your tastes and improve your relationship with food, so you naturally begin to prefer whole foods to their highly processed counterparts. I don’t think that I would do very well with this diet. I prefer to eat the majority of my calories through bread, pasta and rice. I have about a 5.5% body fat, and weigh about 140-145 pounds most of the year. I do run a lot, as well as cross train a lot; any time that I stop workout out, I lose weight too fast and have trouble getting it back. I like the concept, though, and will certainly plan some meals around it.

Very briefly these hormones are produced in response to blood sugar, and free fatty acid levels. Fructose (sugar is 50% fructose) disrupts the operation of this system reducing the feeling of fullness and makes us eat more.

Congrats on going Paleo! Don’t give up!! Going Paleo means making big changes and it just might take a while longer for your metabolism to catch on and catch up. That said, as the article points out, there could be many reasons you’re not losing weight. You could be eating too much or too little, exercising too much or too little. You could be stressed, not sleeping adequately or you could have a food sensitivities, digestive issues or hormonal issues. My husband and child joined the strict Paleo ( no grains, no processed foods, only good fats, lots of organic veggies, limited fruits etc) diet over a year ago based on Ramiel Nagel, author Cure Tooth Decay ideas ( so we added raw goat milk and raw milk kefir and lots of bone broth).

There has to be a way to make this diet work as vegetarian. I have been vegetarian for 25 years, I’m rather healthy and was a healthy weight for 20 of those years, until I had my daughter. I don’t like fish, but I do take cod liver oil, and eat lots of eggs and some dairy.

I had tried another anti-depressant weight loss diet from “The Road Back” – their premise being that anti-depressants activate the “JNK” gene that makes weightloss difficult once activated. I bought the supplements and followed the protocol with no luck. Even the fellow who created the approach was at a loss for what do to for me. I’ll include it here though because some people did have success and so it’s worth knowing it’s out there:

i am on day 12 of the paleo diet. no results at all yet!! i have cut out all of the items i am supposed to cut out. i haven’t even cheated. i’m 60 years old. slim build but i need to lose about 5 pounds. i have been walking several miles each week and going to the gym once or twice a week so far. my body hasn’t shrunk at all yet! i am giving it two weeks. i hope to see results. i did have some higher glycemic fruits so i will cut those out and sweet potatoes. will stick to berries.

I’m curious to know how Intermittent Fasting can play a role with this, since you mentioned eating more in the morning, especially proteins? I would love to eat food in the morning but then I will eat just as much later on in the day. So I’ve been using IF especially to keep from eating at night.

I have really great will power and love experiments so thought I’d try it. 10 years ago I tried giving up alcohol for 6 months (the year before it was 3 months) at the end I just continued & I haven’t drank alcohol since (for over 10 years now).

Staci – Yes, it’s a lot, but I don’t know if it’s too much for your particular situation, having so little to go on. But yes, if you ask most people how often they work out, it’s not 5 days a week. So compared to the general population (which isn’t saying that much), it’s a lot.

I am 75 last year went on the Paleo program lost 30 lbs felt and looked great. fell off the wagon and have put about 5lbs back on I have had 3 knee replacements and both hips replaced, can’t seem to excercise enough to feel fit like I used to, did a lot of walking but now have a bone growing in my foot and very painful any suggestions are there any Sebastopol area people around? thanks Linda

This all looks super delish! However, can anyone advise me on how easy this is to keep up whilst working full time? And how expensive? I love this kind of food, and think it really helps when you mix that with regular workouts. However I work 12 hour shifts. On my 4 days off, I can prep and be super motivated! I have found grass fed meats to be very beneficial, healing (particularly bone broth) and strengthening. Of course I don’t recommend the meat, dairy and eggs of grain-fed, inhumanely raised, sickly animals. But there are options. One size does not fit all. At some point you too may just be burdened by fatigue, hormonal dysfunction, allergies, gut problems, auto-immune disease, etc., and find that you feel better after eating meat. Many, many former vegetarians and vegans have discovered this, just so you know for the future (and the present!!!).

On the fifth day, eat two portions of lean protein (beef, chicken or fish) and six tomatoes. Day six you can eat unlimited protein and vegetables and on the final day you can enjoy unlimited fruit and vegetables and brown rice, but no protein.

7 months now and have lost almost 70 lbs. I have been fighting weight issues all my life and have lost well over 300 pounds off and on, but always comes back. With Paleo the weight has stayed off and I am continuing to lose weight. Now I do lift weights every morning for about 45 – 60 minutes so I’m sure that helps too. All I can say is that for the first time in 21 years since I decided to start losing weight, it truly feels like I don’t have to stress about the weight coming back. I do fell hungry at times, but I just eat more Paleo foods… I was 335 lbs and now I’m looking pretty good at 265!

Dr. Lichtenstein recommends not only stocking your fridge and pantry with healthy foods but your freezer too. That’s because many fruits and vegetables spoil quickly. Raw lean meat may only be usable for a few days in the fridge. But frozen items can last for month. If you always have some foods that fit your cardiac diet in the freezer, you’ll be able to easily whip something up, even when you’re in a rush.

So my daughter is helping me to change the way my husband and I eat. We each keep a journal of what we eat, but this is how we track it. 4-5 proteins, 1 fat, 2 carbs, 4 veggies, 2 fruits, 2 snacks, 1 condiment, 1 dairy, and 8 12oz glasses of water. You must follow portion amounts. We started 9/1/14 and I have lost 25 lbs in about 6 weeks. We plan our meals for the week and make our shopping list. Remember to shop on the outer parts of the store. We don’t buy processed foods. We prep our food on Sunday and get lunches made up for the week. Example: baked or grilled chicken w/veggie or grilled turkey burger w/veggie. We use the frozen veggies. We might do eggs w/turkey sausage for breakfast. You always want to get your protein, veggies, fruit and water in every day. You want be hungry. Remember your fruit is not a snack. We use the snack baggies and do grapes, carrots, veggie chips, or almonds. The more prep you do, the better.. You don’t have to think about what to have. Everything is ready to grad. No mother wants to have her children prematurely. No mother wants to have to visit her newborn in the hospital, in an incubator, connected to tubes. It was devastating not being able to hold them or breastfeed. It was horrible seeing their eyes, which were still black when they were born, being exposed to light that they shouldn’t be. Seeing their skin hanging off them in folds as they hadn’t filled out with fat yet. Their nipples hadn’t formed yet, either. I thought they were going to be reproductively damaged. The nurses fed them formula through tubes. It was a horrible, horrible time. I know I still have some anger I’m harboring over the incompetence of the hospital staff and we also went through all the physical therapy madness you did with your preemie twins; thankfully I realized my boys were “normal” early on and I could relax and just let them develop at their own pace. I know a lot of guilt I feel at not being able to produce enough milk and having to feed them formula they were allergic to is something that will take me years to get over, but knowing I’m doing the right thing now and feeding them properly makes me feel better.

Few things are more discouraging to someone on a weight-loss plan than the oft-cited statistic that 95% of people who lose weight will regain it within a few years. The difficulty in sticking with a long-term weight-maintenance plan is one of the main reasons that weight-loss programs fail. To uncover clues to successful weight loss, researchers have been collecting information on people who have lost weight and successfully kept it off for many years. This project, known as the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), records what these people did to achieve their goals.

Staying away from these beverages entirely can provide enormous long-term health benefits. However, note that you should not replace soda with fruit juice, as it can be just as high in sugar (35, 36).

I want to comment on your pot chile recipe. I make practically this same recipe, ingredient for ingredient, but I do the whole thing on top of the stove and just let it simmer on low till much of the liquid evaporates or until I’m so hungry I just have to dig in. So, less carbs = less glucose in your system, which means your body will have to start burning fat as your fuel source. In other words, decreased fat storage and decreased body fat percentage and increased good-lookingness. Win!

Hi, I am an Inn Keeper and love different foods for breakfast. I eat all of the things you talk about in this diet, AND sometimes serve breakfasts just like this. I was wondering, you say not to drink your calories. I can’t eat much dairy, but crave soy milk. Can I have soy milk on this diet? I don’t drink sodas or tea. Coffee once in a while. Soy milk is like a snack to me, so I would hate to give it up.

If one looks around the world’s population you will notice that in the last 10 years, France had the lowest obesity rate at 10%. What is different about France – they have the highest quality food supply in the world. Their food supply will eventually go to crap.

4. This diet is great for gaining muscle. Just up volume and ensure you get a good amount of low-GI starches (organic whole-grain brown rice or quinoa; the latter is my favorite) after training sessions. Macaroni mixed with tuna is also a great bulking meal.

In reality, we need people to stop drinking sugary beverages like soda. Soda is the one consumable beverage that is repeatedly cited as having the biggest impact on obesity rates. From a public health standpoint, we want soda out of schools and we want cities to really decrease intake of soda—and Coca-Cola knows this and knows they are being proactive and defensive against taxes on soda and other limitations.

I am just starting Paleo. I have Reheumatoid Arthritis. Have had it for 15 years. I am not on any perscription meds as all my doctor wanted me on was the hard meds and I refuse to use them. I been controlling it with diet and over the counter meds for pain. I am trying Paleo because I read about the autoImmune Paleo diet and was very interested to see if it will help me. Would really like to put my RA in remission. I have just started a water aerobics class to get my exercise and help me with pain. I will also be riding my stationary bike twice a week along with the 2 day a week water class. I am not a big meat eater, but I love veggies and I pretty good at making simple meals (my favorite).
