I have been a very faithful Paleo follower for over 2 years now. I kept a constant weight for all but the last 6 months where I have gained 10 pounds and no matter how much I walked it did not take the weight off. So just last week I changed things up a bit. I am 14 years old and i weigh 190 pounds. I sometimes walk 3 miles and then sometimes i just stop getting active. I am doing fencing as a school sport though. The big problem I am having is just eating. And just when I finish excercising i would be like ok good job dont eat junk food, then i just let myself go. This diet is very clearly an unsustainable fad diet but is not as nutritionally unsound as similar diets. Most of these diets claim some magical fat-burning science is involved, or that there is something special about the combination of foods. 5 years ago I followed this soup 7 days and lost 10 kg I’m under active thyroid and it was the very first time I lost after several attempts. Now with festive days gone I gained 5 and will do this fit just five days.

I think that’s a good ethical question. Funding research is expensive. If Coke or anyone wants to contribute to unbiased research, then I don’t want to stop them. I am 60 years old, 5 feet tall, and weigh 220 lbs. I weigh this much due to 3 spinal cord surgeries and 1 hernia surgery in the last 4 years. Me and my husband just started this diet and I had a question regarding a few things you are and are not allowed to consume. 1st – is it ok to use vinegar on salads as well as olives? These are important points, Chris. Thank you. I think that weight loss is an area that has been under dealt with in paleo. Certainly any obese person going from SAD to Paleo will probably lose quite a bit of weight, but the rest of us who have been trying to eat right for a long time already may have trouble getting down to their ideal weight on Paleo (especially women, I would guess). I have also recently discovered your number one “Keep your food simple” rule. I have a theory about this. Food clearly serves both physiological and social purposes. Fancy dishes (usually calorically very dense) are reserved to special occasions in traditional societies (potlatches and other types of special feasting occasions). In the modern world where we are used to having anything we want, we have gotten used to having day be every day.

I have been doing the low carb lifestyle for serveral years now, I cannot seem to lose weight, I am post menopausal, I am insulin resistant, I use around 30grams a day, I am a carb addict, I just dont know what else to do. I’m not Tim, but the benefit of the beans is that traditional low-carb diets are lower in fiber and very low in carbs. Beans, becuase of their high fiber content and high protein are not going to cause a massive spike in blood sugar. You’ll need a food that delivers something similar. I.E. complex carbs, fiber, and protein.

I also gained weight on Paleo and I was hungry all the time. I felt miserable and had no energy for my workouts and yoga. As soon as I added grains back in, the symptoms and the weight went away. I have to admit that I first started a Paleo diet because I thought it would help me shed the stubborn pounds I had put on during law school (there were a lot of free pizza parties and way too much drinking).

I started looking what was up and I found the slightly more extreme Bulletproof diet of 70% fat, 20% protein and 10% vegetabley carbs. So I tried that out, made some of the “Fat Bomb” treats and kept them in my freezer and I continued to loose an additional 40 lbs over a few months. No exercise, although that would have helped. The diet claims its not necessary to exercise to loose weight if you are on this diet, which turned out to be completely true. Now if anyone is like me, I did not want to go to a gym as an excessively flabby person (or EFP if I may) so it was great to first loose weight sitting at home, doing collegely study-like things, reading, video games, etc and then be able to start exercising (I chose swimming because its fun and I have large breasts that make it hard to run in public, not bragging but very true nonetheless. They are all submerged when you swim). I gained confidence and even competed in the cosplay contest in Salt Lake City ComicCon 2015 as a Borg drone and won second place (that is bragging). I continued on the diet simply because my BRAIN WOKE UP! I could think so much clearer on a carbless diet and I swear grades went up because of it. The greatest difference was my ability to focus on things. I went from focus-of-a-knat to focus-of-a-cat (I assume they are good focusers?). So that was, after the weight loss, the reason I kept on the diet. But I often break from it for icecream. Hopefully that’s not going to turn the tides on me…

Thanks Chris for addressing this topic. While I listened to PaleoCon I noticed so many of the “I lost 12 lbs without trying” were people who switched from SAD to Paleo. Makes me wonder if the simple act of -intervention- to their diet was 75% of the catalyst to their weight loss? Another driver to their weight loss is of course the satiating food on Paleo, as compared sugar highs and lows on SAD.

Despite what the Paleo community says, calories do matter and you do have to count your calories if it is your intention to lose weight. This is even more so the case if you’ve already lose a lot of weight. Being that you’re on your last 10 lbs., it could be that even though you’re eating as you always have, you might be eating at what is now your calorie maintenance level.

Erika – Not sure. Have you done a body fat analysis? Maybe you’re gaining muscle? Could be that you’re eating too much food in general. Are you drinking anything besides water? For very long time i believed, like most of us, that more calories in more fat you are, but it’s wrong. I have tried to change my diet and i have verified that’s wrong. Like you said the weight loss is spontaneous, even without doing sport if you eat right you loose weight.

Don’t come anywhere close to starving yourself when you’re on Paleo. This is a diet that has you following the classic three meals a day, and eating meals that fill you up and keep you full till your next meal. Since you’re not limited on how much you can eat, you shouldn’t be worrying that you’ll be super hungry before the next meal time.

Hey there Tim. I stumbled across this and it seems promising. I have 30 days until a much anticipated vacation, and though it has been planned for months my attempts for weight loss have failed. I have printed your rules and plan on getting on the serious boat first thing. However I was wondering about having that combination each time in a meal. Such as the eggs, beans and veggis. Wow, I have heard a lot about people cutting gluten and other foods to which they’re sensitive seeing weight loss. (My mom, for example… hmm.) I started paleo on December 26th ( 50 days ago) and i have lost 8.2kilos. I had tried I thought, everything to loose weight, but couldnt. Paleo changed that. I found portion control is a main issue even on paleo, so have cut back as well. I had it a bit harder than most I feel, as I also owed and ran a bakery…yep, now you can understand, why I couldnt loose weight, as cakes / pies/ bread ( god I loved bread)….but now I own a hotel instead, and Im not much of a drinker, so a change in business has helped. I went in cold turkey to Paleo, as I am a all or nothing girl, and its worked for me. IM down 2 dress sizes, which is wonderful. The down side in this for me, is that my husband liked me fatter, as now Im getting compliments from others, and he doesnt like that at all……..sounds like some ugly issues appearing for sure, but personally nothing tastes better than being a smaller size, thanks Paleo.

Tim, my husband and I are struggling with vegetarian options for breakfast according to your slow carb diet since we don’t eat eggs/fish/meat. Please do suggest options. My husband started Kettle Bell training after it was recommended in your book, he loves it. He complains of low energy from time to time and I have no idea how to restructure our meals. Currently started a homemade fig+dates+banana+yogurt smoothie to replace cereal and toast in the morning. Otherwise ghee, lentils and veggies for meals and lots of spinach. But there is still whole wheat flour and wholemeal bread as part of our diet which I haven’t been able to shake off yet simply because it’s traditional food and I don’t know what to substitute it with that will still fill the stomach and not make us feel hungry all the time. Help!

Congrats on taking steps to improving your health! Your initial weight loss is awesome, but keep in mind that the body needs to adjust to sudden changes. It may take you a few weeks before you lose more weight, and eating super low calories to force weight loss isn’t sustainable. So I would encourage you to eat to meet your nutrition and hunger needs, and not focus entirely on calorie count. Also, as you know, a sedentary lifestyle is hard, so just make every effort to move when you can. The calorie deficit can be created by consuming less calories and burning more. When we burn more calories than we consume, then our body starts breaking down the stored fat with the help of a series of complex metabolic pathways.

Although many fad diets that create rapid weight loss have come and gone over the years, it is encouraging to note that the apple cider vinegar diet leads to gradual weight loss. It would be nice if we could shed pounds quickly and never see them again, but experience has shown that weight that leaves easily comes back easily.

I don’t paleo restrictive at all. It seemed like it at first, but I now feel that my paleo meals are so much more flavorful and enticing than eating bread and pasta. They seem so bland to me now. My diet revolves mostly around veggies with meat on the side. Maybe one or two fruits a day and a handful if nuts. I feel better than ever! My fourteen year old daughter Is a vegetarian that eats eggs and dairy, but limits grains. She’s very happy and healthy. Of course, she still eats pizza with friends, but I think that’s fine.

Add More Steps. Get yourself a pedometer and gradually add more steps until you reach 10,000 per day. Throughout the day, do whatever you can to be more active — pace while you talk on the phone, take the dog out for an extra walk, and march in place during television commercials. Having a pedometer serves as a constant motivator and reminder.

Today the diet restricts you to only eating soup and fruit. They only fruit off limits today is bananas. Berries, oranges, apples and any type of melon are encouraged. You can eat unlimited quantities of the soup or fruit, but try to only eat until full. Don’t forget to drink lots of water. The sweetness of the fruit should keep you satisfied. I ate a small watermelon!

To make hummus Paleo friendly you’ve got to get rid of the chickpeas, which requires a little creativity, and we’ve seen everything from zucchini to cauliflower to macadamia nuts or cashews used to replicate the taste and texture. It may take a bit of trial and error on your part, but if you’re a big fan of hummus and have been missing it on the Paleo diet it’s worth the extra effort.

I’d focus on her diet first. I wouldn’t jump to calorie counting yet. Instead, I’d first have her log everything she currently eats for a week. Then, I’d start making very small changes to her diet that she can handle. Maybe that means a few less sodas (don’t eliminate yet), or maybe that means adding veggies to one of her meals. Small changes until they become habit. Then repeat.

Because playing games distracts your laser focus on about that pint of ooey-gooey chocolate ice cream sitting in your freezer.

There are so many factors that can impact your ability to lose weight, such as the amount of weight you have to lose in the first place, pre existing conditions, sleep patterns, hydration, stress levels, and amount of food consumed. I would recommend that you keep a food and activity journal for a few weeks and see if you notice any patterns (i.e. Consuming a lot of carbs, skipping breakfast, not drinking enough water, drinking too much caffeine, eating too much sugar, not exercising enough, etc) and then adjust as needed. Katherine, you’ve missed the point. Chris’ and Einstein’s comments aren’t intended as stand-alone advice. They’re both assuming that hormonal factors are already being addressed by a Paleo style diet.

Focus on eating fresh produce, whole grains, lean protein, low-fat dairy and small amounts of healthy fats. Eat lower-calorie foods that are rich in fiber, protein and/or water to help you fill up and stay full longer.

If you’re going to work out, don’t do anything extra from day 1 through day 4. You metabolism cannot sustain it because of the low calorie and protein intake. You’ll burn muscle rather than body fat. Implement cardio exercise from day 5 through 10 , after you’ve eaten your meat proteins.

Diet plans range from 1200-1800 calories, which is the low end of calories to sustain energy, satisfy hunger, and help weight loss. The once-weekly cheat meal or treat allows dieters a little flexibility and the option to splurge a little on a glass of red wine or some chocolate.

Hi. I am a diagnosed Celiac. Have been gf for ten years. Although I am feeling SO much better, my weight was still an issue. At 5’6 and 220 lbs size 18, I was looking to make a change. At a friends suggestion I tried the Atkins Diet. I lost 15 lbs but felt TERRIBLE! My skin constantly felt like it was crawling and my hot flashes/night sweats were beyond acceptable! Looking for a healthier version I went Paleo. Absolutely NO sugar NO processed foods NO caffiene NO MSG NO grains or legumes and very little dairy and fruit. I started cooking with coconut oil but not too much. I have GAINED not just the 15 lbs back, but an additional seven lbs on top! I am SO discouraged! My husband, who by the way, has lost 35 lbs just by MY healthy changes, is just as confused as I am. We have nothing unhealthy left in the house! I am active. I garden and I work retail. I so want the Paleo way to work for me and feel that if this is not working then the only thing left is Bariatric Surgery. HELP!

Size doesn’t matter: I’m in sports training right now and my heart’s big once again. The size of the heart is not a concern. I’m an autopsy pathologist, and 100% of obese people have enlarged hearts simply from carrying the weight. Ditto if you’re doing serious athletics. brip – I don’t think I state anywhere on the site that I have anything against fatty meats or animal fats in general. In fact, I just cooked my eggs in duck fat. I totally agree with what you said about animal fats. As for fiber, I think it’s a little over rated, especially the stuff in beans, corn, and potatoes/rice/pasta. The Paleo Plan wouldn’t be the Paleo Pland if you were eating those foods (except the potatoes), in fact. You can get a ton of fiber in fruits and veggies – no need for those foods with all the anti-nutrients in them.

Have you ever supplemented with protein shakes n also become a part of a challenge community to keep you motivated and accountable? I have found these two things to drive me to get in good shape. :)) I think everyone knows that the more we can keep our insulin levels down, the less sugars we store, less fat stored. So far I am loving this site. During the day (like now) I work in a corporate position as a PM but in my spare time I am a boot camp fitness instructor and Crossfit athlete (soon to be Instructor). I have known about the Paleo diet from Crossfit but until now never managed to get on to it and that’s partly because of the fact that I had no clue what recipes to follow and partly because I was lazy. Then I found paleoplan.com (thank goodness!). I have been following the paleo plan recipes for the last two weeks now and I have actually noticed that I am not as or feel as “bloated” as before. I feel and look a bit leaner and feel less sluggish than before.

I I have lost a total of 7 lbs..of which i am happy about. (i have 45 lbs to lose in total) I typically in the past with other eating plans have always been one of the slower losers. My goal is to lose one lb a week…… but if its more IM HAPPY! 🙂

If you’re eating over 100g a day and you’re not really working out at all, then you may be getting too many carbs. If that’s the case, then you can start experimenting with eating fewer carbs – less fruit, sweet potatoes, Paleo sweets, non-Paleo sweets 😉 Too many carbs will quickly put extra fat on you if you’re not using those carbs up. By the way, the 100 grams I just referenced is a very rough number, and everyone is different.

This oversimplifies things because Fat is fat. If you are directly eating fat your body can still either use or store it as stored fat (bad by this articles logic). And it’s no different than a carb eventually turning into fat and being stored.

I haven’t missed the point. I understand paleo is a given. However, lean meat is not the solution. I really believe lowering food reward is key and addressing inflammation. Wild caught salmon is going to work a lot better than chicken breast. . I believe inflammation is interfering with the hypothalamus detecting leptin stores.

When starting to practice Yoga take it slow and easy. Don’t force your body into the different postures all at once. If you do more than your body says it can do, you could hurt yourself. Like any exercise program, you need to go slow and stick with it. You might not notice a difference in your weight straight away but hang in there, it will happen.

I am so excited about the Paleo diet after reading through all these comments and taking a look at this website. My only concern is that I do not eat meat, but I do eat fish, making me a “pescetarian.” Is it possible for me to have the same great results on this diet without eating meat?

A funny thing happens when you focus on making careful diet decisions. If you just “think” of your meal as a light choice, it can cause your brain to make more of the hormone ghrelin, reports a study from Yale University.

Stress is both psychological and biological. Overeating causes biological stress through inflammation due to the excess production of free radicals and what are known as reactive oxygen species that cause cell damage and an inflammatory response. The second reason for elevated inflammation is Advanced Glycation End products (AGE’s) these are the result of uncontrolled reactions between sugars and fats (sugars and amino acids as well but to a lesser degree). Fructose is 7 to 10 times more likely to cause these reactions than glucose, and polyunsaturated fats (much less stable fats) are much more likely to be subjected to these reactions than saturated fats.

This can be true for some people, but others are just completely sensitive to sugar and need to avoid all forms. Bioindividuality is an amazing thing! I personally didn’t lose weight OR gain energy and health until I quit all forms of sugar, but some do fine with limited amounts. It’s all about knowing your own body.

The right number of calories to eat each day is based on your age and physical activity level and whether you’re trying to gain, lose or maintain your weight. You could use your daily allotment of calories on a few high-calorie foods and beverages, but you probably wouldn’t get the nutrients your body needs to be healthy. Limit foods and beverages high in calories but low in nutrients. Also limit the amount of saturated fat, trans fat and sodium you eat. Read Nutrition Facts labels carefully — the Nutrition Facts panel tells you the amount of healthy and unhealthy nutrients in a food or beverage.

There is some scientific legitimacy to today’s lower-carb diets: Large amounts of simple carbohydrates from white flour and added sugar can wreak havoc on your blood sugar and lead to weight gain. While avoiding sugar, white rice, and white flour, however, you should eat plenty of whole-grain breads and brown rice. One Harvard study of 74,000 women found that those who ate more than two daily servings of whole grains were 49 percent less likely to be overweight than those who ate the white stuff. The lap band worked great. Lost about 115 pounds in 2 years. I’m doing this diet b/c my normal diet had become really crappy. I started eating food that was “easy” to eat due to the lap band. Not complaining but ther are a few inconveniences. I was really huge and now just want to get off the last 40 or so pounds. This new way of eating has got me back to following the “eating rules” of a lapband aswell as improving my diet. I have lost about 15 pounds in the first month, feel much better and I can tell I am stronger in my golf game-distance, stamina, etc due to the kettlebell workouts. By the way, I didn’t gain the weight back from the lap band, just was really big and had let my choice of food be dictated by convenience and not what I should be eating. Anyway, I waould have the lapband done again in a heart beat- literally added years to my life.

I had tried another anti-depressant weight loss diet from “The Road Back” – their premise being that anti-depressants activate the “JNK” gene that makes weightloss difficult once activated. I bought the supplements and followed the protocol with no luck. Even the fellow who created the approach was at a loss for what do to for me. My husband began as a new years resolution, and has found it the easiest diet (change of life diet) that he has ever been on. He does not miss too many things besides his milk. He is eating what he loves, MEAT, and has accepted that sweet potatoes offer more flavor than russets. I think if you are looking to lower your blood pressure, you will find this a good diet for that. My husband has his doctors blessing for being on this diet. Anything that can help rid you of belly fat that puts pressure on your organs is better for you in the long run. He was also diagnosed as pre-diabetic and if he didn’t lose the weight he would become a diabetic soon. Since being on this change of eating diet, the omission of all fast food, soda, sugar, dairy (milk), and white flour, he has lost 26 pounds. His waist has gone down 4 belt holes. This is great in that he is losing the weight slowly, he is still able to eat dark chocolate, have his bacon, meat, eggs, and the other stuff that would be taboo on a “diet”. You should average 2-3 pounds a week and that seems like what you are doing. Some weeks you may not lose any and that’s okay because it is an average of 2-3 pounds. Keep at it and success wil come to you. There are so many meal options to try that are yummy and I eat them also and I do not need to lose weight. Fruits are good to have. I eat one or two servings a day of strawberries or raspberries. They are lower in sugar and calories.
