As far a bread is concerned, don’t beat yourself up about it. If you follow the 70/30 rule, it allows you to have 3 non-Paleo meals per week. Meaning you can have a few slices of bread per week as long as you don’t go overboard. I would suggest no more than 3 and stick to wholemeal.

I can buy way more raw food than processed in a super market like costco and samclub etc because there is a very large profit margin on processed food. The local super markets like winn dixie and publix has very high mark ups on their food. If one is on low income, it pays to shop at more bulk places.

I disagree that the diet “revolves around red meat and little else.” I’ve been eating Paleo for the last year and a half. There’s this misconception that all we eat is meat. Do my daily meals revolve around animal protein? Yes, but I’m generally eating about 4 or 5 ounces per meal. The bulk of my meals comes from all kinds of fruits & vegetables. I have a salad with my lunch and dinner. I have some sort of vegetable at each meal, including a starchy veg at least once a day (sweet potato, butternut squash). You have a ridiculous number of choices for veg (cooked broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprout; all sorts of leafy greens, summer squashes, etc.). Every meal includes some forms of fat: butter, ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, nuts, and seeds. And then there’s fruit. And while some say Paleo is expensive because of the cost of organics and pastured raised animal protein, I do what I can do. If I can’t afford organic, then I don’t buy organic. It’s still a better choice than sugar laden, processed garbage that destroys my gut health. You have to make the best choices you can, and for me, an autoimmune former vegetarian, I have found Paleo to be a godsend. I’m healthier now than I was being a vegetarian. Fruit is a different story. Fruits are almost entirely made up of carbohydrate, with some fruits containing more carbs (i.e. bananas) than others (i.e. granny smith apples). In general, minimizing fruits (and carbs in general) will expedite weight loss. Also, if you can save your carbs/fruit till later in the day, they will have less of a ‘roller-coaster’ effect on your blood sugar throughout the day. Dried fruit and fruit juice are some of the highest-carb foods out there, and for this reason I personally avoid them. Having said all that, everyone is unique with regards to how many carbs their bodies are optimized with, and it does take some trial and error at first to figure out what will work best for you.

This is probably a dumb question, but is it okay to have a bit of butter with the vegetables, or are they best eaten dry? Also, I do see the logic of keeping things simple. On the other hand, I usually have a nice garden every summer, so I tend to have a variety of veggies on hand.

Exercise tips, first 3-4 days keep it to a minimal like just walking and your usual activities. Starting day 5 to 7, I highly recommend walking for 45 minutes extra of your normal activities. No need for fast pace or anything extra, just a nice 45 minutes walk. It will not only burn calories, it will help with your hunger and intake of your last few soup meals. By day 5 to 7 your pot of soup should look low and just enough to finish through day 5 and 7.

Using smaller plates can help you eat smaller portions. By using smaller plates and bowls, you may be able to gradually get used to eating smaller portions without going hungry. It takes about 20 minutes for the stomach to tell the brain it’s full, so eat slowly and stop eating before you feel full.

Try this strategy to permanently reduce cravings: Portion out one serving of your favorite treat, taking a minute to smell it, look at it, and think about it. Take one small bite. Chew slowly, moving it around your mouth and focusing on the texture and taste, then swallow. Ask yourself whether you want another bite or if that satisfied you. I love bread too! And I still eat it sometimes- albeit gluten free- (also Hashimotos) and I live in Portland which is apparently the gluten free capital of the world, so I eat delicious GF french bread, that tastes like real french bread…but I digress. I had to have all my favourites. Why, he asked? I explained that this is my only chance to eat this food and I HAD to have it all. Just like that a switch flipped in my mind. Anyway in conclusion, I was able to go from carby diet to no carby diet very easily because I love bacon and mayonnaise, and the Bulletproof Diet recipes for “Fatbombs” that are basically sweetened butter cream cheese and dark chocolate which are very sweet but 90% fat. Oh and Quest bars.

I am in the same situation. I tried Paleo and gained about 4 lbs in two weeks. I also felt awful and did not have the energy for my workouts. And don’t even ask about the lethargy and brain fog. It’s just not cut out for everyone, especially not with all that fat. When I use fat, it’s real and natural but I think some of us just do better with a lower fat diet.

I’ve tried different diets to see what works best for me. It’s hard to do, to make yourself a science experiment. But what I feel is working best for me is to be very moderate with meat (and make sure it’s pasture raised, grass fed), somewhat moderate with eggs (again, pasture raised), moderate with high-sugar fruits (many more berries than bananas, for instance), very moderate w/ grains, less so w/ beans/legumes (soak them first) and abundant w/ veggies.

Pernille, The same thing happened to me. The Paleo Diet simply wasn’t enough to address my condition completely, but what it did do for me was keep my symptoms from worsening. What I discovered is that in order to make the weight gain change (I was 105 lbs, and gained 50 in the space of a few short months) I had to focus on eating QUALITY meats, grass-fed and wild-caught, I ate no animals that ate corn and soy so no chicken, no pork, and no turkey, and I also added in increased amounts of fructooligosaccharides after going on a VLC version of the Paleo Diet (big mistake). What took me a few years to realize was that at the root of all of my diseases and symptoms, I had one glaring disorder that had gone unchecked: gut dysbiosis. What I did to resolve that finally you’ll never believe, but it was something called a fecal transplant. If you have rendered specific species of beneficial bacteria in your body extant, then no amount of eating a grain-free diet can bring them back to life. I had to resolve that. Then, eating nothing but wild-caught fish and orange juice took me the rest of the way. robyn, maybe it is not too late for you to undo the damage done by being vegetarian. if you had a child, you can’t be too old yet 🙂 a young body can take a lot of abuse before it starts to fail. otherwise we’d be all dead, me too :-). exactly the fact that your problems started during/after pregnancy is the telltale sign that should raise the red flag. the pregnancy drained your body of whatever it was lacking already and it tipped the balance. last drop in the cup before it overflows, if you like. you can’t be healthy without meat, especially not if pregnant. if you don’t start eating quality meat (doesnt need to be too often or too much) it will be downhill for you from here. And if you lead your child to vegetarianism too (bad examples are catchy), you will do a lot of damage to him too. Don’t take my word for it but pls start investigating the pros and contras for yourself. I would recommend starting with Mark Sissons Primal Blueprint, then continue with Paul Jaminets Perfect Health Diet. From there, you will find your own path. You can’t fool nature, humans need meat. There is no vegetarian wild living tribe out there, no indigenous population that refuses to eat meat. Not one. And there is a very good reason for that. Period.

For more information, pick up Dr. Atkins’ book. I highly recommend it. Most folks seems to miss Dr. Atkins’ point that you want to start out with a highly restrictive diet and move to include slow carbs in phases. The highly restrictive diet helps to eliminate your sugar/carb cravings and increase insulin sensitivity. It kind of tears you down and builds you back up in a healthy way. By the end of the diet, you’ll be eating lots of berries, nuts, beans, and other healthy carbs, once you are moving towards life-time maintenance mode. It also stresses whole foods and lots of vegetables.

Hi Maura. I find that when I don’t eat first thing in the morning, that I’m ok until lunch. When I would eat breakfast I’d get really hungry after I’d burned off the meal. This is a great article. It amazes me that a cup of coffee can hold you back….or too much fruit. Those 2 are my main problems. I love them both dearly. Instead of piling everything on one plate, bring food to the table in individual courses. For the first two courses, bring out soup or veggies such as a green salad or the most filling fruits and vegetables. By the time you get to the more calorie-dense foods, like meat and dessert, you’ll be eating less or may already be full. Nothing wrong with leftovers!
