I think it’s great that you are committing to the paleo lifestyle for bettering you and your family’s health. We are also just starting this journey. We have an 80/20 lifestyle right now for no processed foods, which I thought was a good step towards health but decided the paleo lifestyle, after a bunch of reading, was actually way healthier. The downer for us is dairy……we are committed to doing the paleo on an 80/20 scale also. We will do paleo 80% of the time and the no processed foods the other 20%. Hi Maura. I find that when I don’t eat first thing in the morning, that I’m ok until lunch. When I would eat breakfast I’d get really hungry after I’d burned off the meal. I gather that was something about continuing the evenings fast, that it’s the aftermath of eating that generates hunger, and it’s easy to not eat until lunch.

You really nailed it, in my opinion! I spent decades experimenting and researching nutritional paradigms and paths, and found that I feel best consuming a lower fat, higher carb diet. My hubby is the opposite. He thrives on lots of fat and protein, and of course still needs good cards for energy but never feels good when he eats the way that feels great for me. I see so many arguing the low fat versus low carb thing, I wish more realized that both are great, depending upon your own body, preference, etc. I also love your suggestions to lift heavy 2x per week and mix it up with other things. I like to lift 2-3x weekly and do Bikram (minus the heat) at home 2-3x times, such a nice balance. So “brava!” on another terrific article, very helpful and very wise. 😉

I already do not eat gluten, dairy, and eggs due to food sensitivities and this January I weighed 135.4 at 5′-1.5″ and I decided to jump start the new year and my metabolism by being more strict and avoided all added sugar (which I rarely ate before but due to the holidays I slipped a bit). Also, I was eating more brown rice and sweet potatoes than normal so I wanted to avoid grains and starchy vegetables. I have used this diet to get me “back on track” for the first week when I get “off track” with eating healthy and have found it useful for that purpose. I am just starting Paleo. I have Reheumatoid Arthritis. Have had it for 15 years. I am not on any perscription meds as all my doctor wanted me on was the hard meds and I refuse to use them. I been controlling it with diet and over the counter meds for pain. I am trying Paleo because I read about the autoImmune Paleo diet and was very interested to see if it will help me. Would really like to put my RA in remission. I have just started a water aerobics class to get my exercise and help me with pain. I will also be riding my stationary bike twice a week along with the 2 day a week water class. I am not a big meat eater, but I love veggies and I pretty good at making simple meals (my Thank you Chris for all of your information. The best yet. I look forward to be successful with Paleo.

Lisa, You could have some other issues. Have you ever heard of bio identical homrones? Google it. I had the same issue and found out that my body was not producing near enough progesterone. This can cause all sorts of issues and weight gain. I had a hysterectomy when I was 40. I am now 47, staying strict with Paleo, and taking bio idential progesterone. I’m finally starting to drop the weight. Good Luck!

I never eat wheat. Ever. Or anything with wheat in it. I don’t care if it’s sprouted, fermented, fried in tallow or surrounded by cheese. That is the only hard and fast rule I have. And I still eat it sometimes- albeit gluten free- (also Hashimotos) and I live in Portland which is apparently the gluten free capital of the world, so I eat delicious GF french bread, that tastes like real french bread…but I digress. There’s really no replacement for this, but you can “correct” for it to a certain extent with diet by using a little more caution with carbs. If you tolerate carbohydrates well – great! But a completely sedentary life might reduce your carb tolerance; just be aware of how much you can and can’t handle.

The best you can do is cut down on your food intake. Stick to high-protein foods and slow-release carbohydrates to make you feel full for longer, and drink plenty of water. Avoid sugary and fatty foods at all costs. Get up and move about every 50 minutes for a few minutes — you can think on your feet some of the time.

Phase three is a blessing because it allows me to eat in restaurants, as long as I stay within the limits of my food list. There are many studies that show major benefits of moderate alcohol consumption. That is why many people on Paleo still drink. I think we all know that heavy drinking is a problem, but no one knows exactly how much is too much. I’m sure it depends on a lot of factors that are different for everyone. It is hard to find that balance, for sure, but for many of us, giving up alcohol almost entirely doesn’t feel like the best or healthiest option. Stress may be worse for you than a little too much booze, so for some lifestyles sharing a bottle of wine in the evening might be the least of two evils. It’s really hard to say.

Although medical treatment (for example orlistat [Alli, Xenical]) is available, they should only be used by people who have health risks related to being obese. Doctors usually consider medications to be an appropriate treatment in patients with BMI greater than 30 or in those with a BMI of greater than 27 who have other medical conditions (such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high blood cholesterol) that put them at risk for developing heart disease. It is not recommend that medications be used for cosmetic weight loss or to lose small amounts of weight.

So how do you keep a Paleo diet simple? Stick to the basics of a healthy meal: a protein like meat or fish, plenty of non-starchy vegetables, whole foods carbohydrates from root vegetables or fruit, and some healthy fat. Although I love a delicious gourmet meal as much as the next person, it’s easy to go overboard with delicious Paleo recipes. 2. Can you really eat any starch that you want if its right after a workout? So, for example, if I spent a half hour doing bodyweight exercises like squats, push ups, pull ups and the like would it then be acceptable on this plan to go out and have a big cheese burger and fries?

I am not sure how to proceed. I have a lot of weight to lose and I need to get started asap! I want to make paleo work for me…..I don’t see any other way of eating that would be sustainable for life other than eating paleo. The paleo diet is a truly magnificent way of eating because it allows you to eat a lot of food without calorie counting. While many will happily load up their plate with veggies, protein, and healthy fats, some people can get a little skimpy with their serving sizes. Diet diary: I was naughty in New York so as punishment I’ve decided to start from the beginning of the diet. Let the fasting begin again! So I had a day of eating nothing but a handful of veggies. Whilst it was nothing like the withdrawal that experienced when I first started the plan, it was still tough. But I knew I had to do it in order to get rid of that horrible sugar addiction.

I had the same problem when I started paleo but I did notice how my clothes were fitting and by comments from others about how much weight I’ve lost, so maybe don’t focus on the numbers on the scale go by measurements and clothes.

If you are already fit and have a low body fat percentage, losing 17 lbs is not advised or healthy. And much tougher to achieve. Meaning, if you’re a woman who’s height is 5’8″ and 125 lbs, don’t expect to lose 17 lbs to fit that little spaghetti black dress better, because you don’t need to do this diet, I’m sure you already make that dress look great at 125 lbs and honestly you could gain a few more lbs in my opinion. Like me for example, if I was 190 lbs and do this diet, I would probably lose 9-11 lbs max because my body fat would not be as high as it is at 220 lbs.

While you’re feeling famished, your metabolic rate also drops as your body attempts to conserve energy. This means you’ll naturally burn fewer calories, so you’ll have to cut even more of them from your diet in order to keep the scale on a downward trajectory, Ludwig explains.

Surround yourself with people who support your efforts. Even our good friends can knowingly or unknowingly sabotage weight-loss attempts. Spend time with those people who will not pressure you to make poor food choices.

The truth is, calories do count, even on Paleo. I don’t actually count them, but know if I’m starting to gain (I lost 80 pounds years ago) I’m eating too much, and cut back. But, I’ve found this to be an easy diet to stick to. For the first time in my life I’m not hungry all the time and my energy is great. But, that doesn’t mean I somehow know when to stop eating automatically like a regular skinny person. I’m not even skinny. I think it’s a mistake to tell overweight people they can just eat what they want as long as it’s on the diet. No. So, a little self guidance and discipline is necessary. Knowing that at the beginning eliminates surprises and a sense of failure on this diet.

I’ve gained on paleo too…..I cannot seem to handle all the fat. If I follow paleo guidelines minus animal fat (olives. avocado coconut oil seem fine) then I can maintain a good weight without trying to hard. But as soon as I start enjoying fattier cuts of meat or using butter, duck fat, lard etc. then the weight slowly creeps up.

Whatever method you use, you’ll need to favor good-for-you foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean protein so you keep up good nutrition. Working with a dietitian is a good idea, so you make a plan that covers those needs.

Then the weight should come off more or less painlessly, with a minimum of deliberate restriction and a maximum of delicious meals!

If you’re active, you’ll naturally need more carbohydrates in your diet. On a paleo diet, these can be sourced from potatoes, sweet potatoes, other starchy veggies and fruit. You can even add a little white rice or quinoa (read more about paleo and white rice here). If you’re active, your body does well with more carbs both for performance and to recover properly.

Don’t ban any foods from your weight loss plan, especially the ones you like. Banning foods will only make you crave them more. There’s no reason you can’t enjoy the occasional treat as long as you stay within your daily calorie allowance.

A few thousand years ago, humans discovered farming, the agricultural revolution took off, and we advanced from hunter-gatherers to farmers. Dr. can you explain to me why it is better for me to try to stick to 3 meals a day while on Paleo rather than snacking in between? I am eating Paleo to be healthy but also to try and lose some weight, we aere always taught to eat frequently if you want to lose weight, but the Paleo diet goes against this.

Most fruits and veggies, when bought frozen or canned, are cheap enough for any budget if you can’t afford fresh produce. You can also prepare foods in a healthier way by baking foods instead of frying and serving smaller portions.

Weight loss foods are low density foods meaning there’s a tiny bit of calories in a lot of food so you can eat a lot more weight loss foods without gaining weight and you’d be too full anyways before you even get to that point so for example…

Something I’d like to point out as well is that recent studies have shown that the saturated fat in eggs and diary does NOT raise your risk of heart attack and stroke. They do raise LDL levels, but the LDL molecules are larger and don’t pose any risk.

I completely agree with Andy. All the sugars – honey, agave, etc.- “allowable” on Paleo trigger insulin responses and signal the body to store fat. I went low carb 2 years ago, and yes, the excess fat I couldn’t lose for 30 years just evaporated. Now if I ever feel a pound or 2 creeping back (rare), I check in on my carbs, cut back a bit, INCREASE dietary FAT (yes!), and I’m back to good in no time. As much as we know about fat not being the bad-guy, we STILL have a hard time truly understanding it. (Good) Fat Rocks! Otherwise, I totally agree with most of your assessments. SLEEP is a critical one!!!!

The only downside to CLA is that it is gotten from sunflower seed oil. The ideal CLA would be gotten from grass fed animals. It would be more safer and healthier since that is the kind most research of CLA is based on.

I maybe eating too less or too much; or not sleeping enough, or taking too less or too much carbs but what ever it is I am not doing anything different than the last month in which I lost 13.2 pounds (that was %11 of my total weight) , this month none, my weight remained the same trough the whole month.

Once you know your calorie maintenance level, it’s time for some very basic subtraction. If you failed second grade math, now would be the time to go get a calculator. There are about 3500 calories in 1 pound. So, if you were to eat 3500 calories less than your body needs each week, you would end up losing 1 pound per week. Thanks Chris for addressing this topic. While I listened to PaleoCon I noticed so many of the “I lost 12 lbs without trying” were people who switched from SAD to Paleo. Makes me wonder if the simple act of -intervention- to their diet was 75% of the catalyst to their weight loss? Another driver to their weight loss is of course the satiating food on Paleo, as compared to sugar highs and lows on SAD.

Even if you try to eat homemade as much as possible, unavoidable situations—like a client dinner—are bound to pop up. When that happens, find ways to make them work for you (make dining out less stressful with these must-follow rules). Scope out the menu or call the restaurant ahead of time to figure out what you can order. Or, if it’s a situation where people are less likely to notice that you’re not nibbling (like a cocktail party), just eat before you go and sip something Whole30-approved that could pass for a mixed drink, like seltzer with lime. 

I don’t know how many of the situations above apply to you, but this is what comes to mind when I hear that people are having trouble losing weight. I have a feeling you’ll have some success if you start experimenting with these things. If you don’t, then I’d strongly suggest going to see Paleo friendly naturopathic doctor, or “Naturopath”. You can find one in your area on www.primaldocs.com. They’ll do some testing to figure out what’s going on. Who knows – maybe you have yeast overgrowth or a parasite that’s causing weird stuff to happen to your immune and digestive systems. Maybe your thyroid is out of whack and you need to take herbal and nutrient supplements for a while (like me). Maybe your sex hormones are out of balance and need some nutrient support, or even bioidentical hormone replacement.  It could be a lot of things, all of which could affect weight loss.

I just asked for and got your 4-hr Body book for my Birthday. I am trying the Slow Carb diet that has been so successful for so many and pray it works for me. I LOVE Mexican so this should be ok.
