Allan I agree with Prioris’ comment. You may want to step away from the scale and go by measurements (particularly your waistline measurement) and how your clothes are fitting. I know its hard to do that but that number on the scale can fluctuate for so many different reasons. Another suggestion would be maybe not to try to do it all at once maybe take a couple of weeks and get your ‘diet’ down and then add in some exercise. Its possible that too much change too quickly through your metabolism hormones out of whack and they signaled your brain to store fat rather than use it for energy! Good luck!

Not much really. When I first went Primal, I walked everywhere. I just strapped the kids in the stroller and hit the road. I did CrossFit for about a year, and that was a lot of fun. Frankly, I exercised more before I went Primal, when I thought it was the key to weight loss. Now that I know it isn’t, going to the gym for the sheer fun of it doesn’t happen very often.

Ignorance simply means, lack of knowledge or information. Society sometimes changes the assumed definition of a word. I consider myself an intelligent person, with education in nutrition and food science, but I was ignorant to paleo before I learned about it. And there’s still more TO learn. So yes, ignorant is a fair assessment.

The best place to buy things if you can present them with some business card or even create a corporation having to do with food or if you know someone in restaurant business is Restaurant Depot who allows you to reference their account when you buy things. They sell food dirt cheap compared to super markets.

As far as the protein goes, I am eating fish, eggs, and protein powder. I don’t eat chicken, beef, pork… so those are my swaps, hoping it wont mess anything up. I just had my gall bladder out, so my system is a bit touchy. I had beans all week, and it’s been rough. I have a hi protein, hi fiber, low carb, organic whole grain bread that I may try swapping for the beans a few times this week. (only 2 net carbs) I hope it goes alright, I don’t see why not?

Very interesting article.A vegetarian diet is the optimal way to meet your nutritional needs. The key to a healthy vegetarian diet or vegan diet is variety – which includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes….….I’m hoping we’ll be able to see results soon.

Breadie (and other high carb eaters), one missing piece here is that tastes change as you switch your eating patterns. Just because your tastes now make this way of eating appear unappealing, over time, more vegetables and other foods now become more appealing. Also, really, let’s be absolutely clear about the diversity of food choices on the Paleo diet. Right, it ‘restricts’ you to all the huge spectrum of fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and meats. If you don’t think you can find something ‘tasty’ to eat, and somehow the bland starches and grains are what’s appealing, then you need to take another look and discover what the breadth and depth of tastes are really there. The cup isn’t half empty. Or just go ahead and eat the bread and muffins, and enjoy and accept the consequences.

I believe in a different approach, and that’s having a strategic blueprint to follow that allows you to SLOWLY adapt your diet in specific ways so that your body adjusts comfortably to a new lifestyle.

Phase 2 is based on general healthy eating principles and is well balanced. However phase 1 – to be followed if you have more than 10lb to lose – is quite restrictive and can leave you feeling tired and without some of the vitamins and minerals you need.

Breastfeeding made my body hold on to pregnancy weigh until my son was done nursing. He nursed for one year, and once he weaned himself, I started dropping weight like crazy. I gained ~60lbs during my pregnancy, lost 10-15lbs after the birth, and lost the rest after my son stopped nursing. Ironically, I was much less hungry and ate less whilst nursing than I did during the pregnancy, but still retained the weight. I think my body reacted to the lactation hormones in such a way that it was near-impossible to lose the weight until after I was done lactating. It took me about a year and a half to get back down to my normal weight of 115-120lbs.

That means fewer carbs and a serving of vegetables to go along with your squash. Another example of how Paleo has been mislabeled as a meat-centric diet. Vegetables serve an important function, providing fiber, vitamins and minerals to supplement meat.

You’ve hit the nail on the head with #10. Sometimes, for some people, it’s just a lot more complicated. You need and understanding professional to guide you through a lot of testing to get to the bottom of what’s not working. Don’t give up! I’m still on my journey but have learnt so much!

Every few months or so, a celebrity will make headlines by adopting a vegan diet and singing its praises. This is nothing new, and most of the time it isn’t really news, either. I have questions about the Paleo way of life if you can call it that or prefer the term diet I don’t know, but I cannot seem to locate a message board or discussion group. Only finding blogs. I know this works to lose weight, my boss who has a discussion board/support group for Paleo dieters or cave people as she calls it, but she pays $425 a month!!!! She’s a veterinarian, she can afford it. She started in February 2014 and by July had lost 52 pounds without exercising just occasional short walks. She takes no supplements. She has been taken off her diabetic medicine too UNREAL! I would’ve started at the same time she did, but I was pregnant then.

I couldn’t agree more! After years of yo-yo dieting, I was forced to look at my lifestyle after a car crash left me seriously injured. Since switching to Paleo I’ve lost 2 dress sizes, my skin is clear and I no longer get heartburn as a result of avoiding refined wheat products. And bear in mind that I couldn’t exercise during this time so I lost all that weight as a result of switching to Paleo. I’ve also learned not to judge my progress by the scales because if I did that it would tell me that I lost no weight whatsoever!

My suggestion: Get Seth Robert’s book on Shangri-La and start having plain MCT oil for breakfast, an hour before your coffee, no flavors at all, not even toothpaste. Drink your coffee, make sure it is an hour after the MCT oil, then do not eat until lunch.

Certain dietary fats come with red flags. And the absolutely worst match for your apple-shaped figure: saturated fats. While unsaturated fat can help reduce abdominal fat, saturated fat can increase waist size, a study published in the journal Diabetes found. Slow and steady wins the race.  Losing weight too fast can take a toll on your mind and body, making you feel sluggish, drained, and sick. Aim to lose one to two pounds a week so you’re losing fat rather than water and muscle.

Capsaicin: I really like this ingredient because in this product, it will help you lose the most weight. 270 calories more are the number they talk about. And Capsaicin is capable of that because it can increase both your blood flow and temperature. Therefore, more nutrients will be transformed and a greater amount of fat will be consumed.

6.  Eat 2-3 Meals per Day (and maybe one snack):  Eating less frequently is better for your insulin and leptin sensitivity (and actually all of your hormones).   If you are also keeping your sugar intake fairly low, then this is really great for regulating your hunger too.  Some people like to create a calorie deficit by occasionally skipping meals.  This only works if your stress levels (specifically your cortisol levels) are well-managed (you should be getting plenty of sleep and lots of low-strain exercise).

Actually, if you read Tim’s book he talks about how eating more protein and healthy fats can help you get over your plateau. He advises eating one more egg in the morning as an example. I would also add oil and vinegar to your salad as dressing to add healthy fats. I don’t think cutting down the already low cal meals your eating would help. Read Tim’s book for some more ideas. 🙂

While the number on the scale is often seen as the end-all, be-all to gauging your weight loss success, it’s not. Seriously. You can ditch it for awhile. It won’t miss you, and you might not even grieve its loss too heavily. In fact, you might be surprisingly relieved when you’re not relying on its numbers to tell you whether you’ve been “good” or “bad.”

Intermittent fasting is not an overall reduction in calories, just a reduction in the frequency of meals. When intermittent fasting the faster should increase their portion sizes to compensate for the reduction in meals. Go easy on the starches: If your Paleo prescription includes starchy veggies, remember to eat them in moderation. Similarly to sugars, they’re digested relatively quickly and have a greater impact on blood sugar and insulin than other foods on the Paleo diet.

Phase 2 is based on general healthy eating principles and is well balanced. However phase 1 – to be followed if you have more than 10lb to lose – is quite restrictive and can leave you feeling tired and without some of the vitamins and minerals you need.

Cook just once or twice a week and make meals for the whole week. Cook a large batch of heart healthy food and reheat leftovers the rest of the week. Or freeze meals in individual portions for those days when you don’t have time to cook.

You might also want to join a weight loss group where you can talk about how it’s going with people who can relate. Or talk with someone you know who’s lost weight in a healthy way. Their encouragement is “contagious,” in a good way!

I love almond milk (original) so I make my smoothies every morning always with a banana (a must have for me) and any fruit or vegetable I feel to add (paleontology). About 7 months ago I started my diet. I begin by consuming NO CARBS for two weeks to kick start things. I also fast one day a week. Fasting is no big deal and once you get used to it and you kind of look forward to your “fast” day. I went from 218 to 198 and then I kind of went off the diet.

I was diagnosed with RA as well at age 32. We just lost a full term pregnancy as well due to a complication of identical twins and I don’t want to go on meds due to the toxicity to the body for when we start trying to conceive. I was in a horrible flare right after pregnancy and now (3.5 months later) with all the diet modifications I am doing much better. Still very stiff in the morning and after sitting. But actually just start as well and have seen results. I am making bone broth as well. Dr Mercola speaks of great benefits for RA. This is really a life overhaul going gluten, grain, dairy and soy free. I am walking though so that is improvement!

Some of the most popular food additives are linked with weight gain and obesity, according to a study done by Georgia State University. Emulsifiers, which are added to most processed foods for texture and to extend shelf life, are one of the worst offenders as they interfere with good gut bacteria. And some artificial flavorings, artificial sweeteners, preservatives, and even food packaging have also been linked in research to obesity. No one is saying you can’t indulge in your favorite treat but try to pick one without extra additives—it’ll taste just as great. Not convinced? These are the signs you’re eating too many preservatives.

With a lap band, sometimes volume of food is a problem. How important is it to eat a food from all three groups-protein, legumes, veggies- at every meal. Sometimes i’m doing well to get 2 of the groups consumed. Weight loss is going well, about 15 pounds in 3 weeks. Have had at least 1 person daily comment about my weightloss. Of the 3 groups, which is better to leave out or should I alternate leaving out veggies and legumes every other meal. Don’t think it would be wise to leave out protein. Oh, I never get hungary, is it ok to skip a meal. Lunch or dinner I can skip occasionaly, but I never skip breakfast even tho breakfast is the most difficult meal to eat due to the lapband. By lower carbohydrate I mean still approximately 100 grams of carbohydrate a day (and more if you are an athlete). It can be more than this. It can be slightly less. Good carbs to eat are fruits and starchy vegetables.

Thought I’d let you guys know, I started this diet on Monday and I’ve already lost close to 4lbs. I am 29 years old and I started this diet weighing in at 229, now I’m close to 225. I am very active, training for a muay thai kickboxing fight in Nov. where I have to be around 185 (my goal weight). This list is great but just an fun to those new or unfamiliar with Paleo, several of these recipes are not paleo. Rice, quinoa, brown sugar, vegetable oil and cheese are all ingredients that are not paleo. This list would be more aptly called Primal food plan. Delicious, yes, but paleo, no.

Go for the Grain. By substituting whole grains for refined grains like white bread, cakes, cookies, and pretzels, you add much-needed fiber and will fill up faster so you’re more likely to eat a reasonable portion. Choose whole-wheat breads and pastas, brown rice, bran flakes, popcorn, and whole-rye crackers.

Because one’s appetite, eating habits, and preferences vary widely among individuals, before you decide on a diet plan, ask yourself if the plan sounds realistic to you. If the plan involves rigorous measuring of portions and calorie counting, are you up to the task? If you’re forbidden to eat certain foods, will you develop cravings for them? Do you feel that you will feel comfortable adhering to the diet guidelines? Will the diet’s requirements fit easily into your daily schedule? Finally, consider that once you’ve lost the weight, you may regain the weight if you return to your previous eating habits, so any weight-loss plan should be something you can live with for a long time.

To weigh yourself fairly, Rubaum Keller suggests stepping on the scale in the morning after you’ve gone to the bathroom. Weigh yourself naked or wearing whatever you wear to bed. Do it exactly that way for seven days, recording your weight each day. Then, total the number and divide by seven. That will be your average (and most true) weight over the seven-day period. Based on that weight, you can then begin a weight loss plan or decide that you are happy where you are. 

Some fruits are high in sugar. You just need to research which ones and limit the intake. If you eat foods high in sugar especially before you go to bed, these are added calories and will be stored as fat.

Right. We are burning calories. It’s good for all of our systems—from our heart to our digestive system to our psychological well-being. People should exercise for their health overall but alone it’s not good for weight loss. 

Charles I think Cordain is talking about starvation, which would be extended periods of time, say weeks without eating or little eating such that there is a severe calorie deficit, think holocaust. Intermittent fasting is typically regimen that involves a fast that lasts for maybe 16-24 hours, where the length and frequency of how you do it is varied, hence the word It’s a good idea to determine the length or frequency of your fast based on how it makes you feel.

The paleo diet imitates a hunter-gatherer diet and aims to reduce the risk of modern diseases. It promotes eating whole, unprocessed foods and restricts foods like grains, sugar, dairy and processed foods.

Dr. Bangalore says the message here should apply to anyone trying to lose weight, not just people with heart disease. “I often see patients trying to lose a ton of weight, and once they achieve it they try to relax and go back to their old habits,” he says. “Whatever you can do to reduce weight is important, but once you do all that hard work, it’s also important to try to keep it off.”

If you’re following the basic Paleo approach, try to get at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity activity (like brisk walking) each week, along with a couple days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers tips to get you started.

I agree that if you’re not achieving your weight loss goals, you should definitely take the time to reevaluate current patterns and try new things, as the article suggests. I disagree with your assumption that all diets are equally effective and that the onus for success rests solely on now hard an individual is willing to work. This thinking is outdated. We know now that our ability to burn fat is highly individual and some of us need to minimize insulin and other lipotrophic hormones as much as possible in order to lose weight. When I was younger I was the fat girl in my school. It was when I moved out after high school that I saw there was more to life. I knew the one way I would get to enjoy that life was to lose weight first and foremost. To give myself some courage and confidence after having been the school chubby chub (which I completely imposed on myself, no glandular problems, eating disorders, jonah hill fetishes etc.). So I remembered the Atkins diet and the kid on Bad News Bears that carried around a baggy of bacon and thought I could do that too. Fat girls love bacon you know. I dropped like 20 pounds in the first few weeks. But then I plateaued and knew that 8 lbs of what I lost was water weight that would return right whenever I ate some carbohydrates again.

2. If you have a lot of fat to lose (ie. >20% body fat) then I would recommend a “Cheat Meal” to start rather than a “Binge Day”. There’s a continuum from Cheat Meal to Binge Meal to Binge Day in how severely you break the diet’s rules. A Cheat Meal might be excessive but still quality carbs like potatoes or pasta while a Binge Meal will have both excessive and low-quality carbs like a Snickers bar or slice of cake. The greater the fat to lose then the less severe of a binge is appropriate.

Ultimately, however good our diet is, if we’re thinking too much about what we eat, we’re probably eating more than we need. The times when I feel the thinnest and healthiest are when I’m enjoying life and passionately involved in my projects. The old saying “Eat to live, not live to eat,” is really wise. People (including me at times) who spend all day planning healthy meals and grocery shopping, etc., are probably using this behavior at least partly to escape from life. And when you’re not really living, what else is there to do besides eat (and maybe spend too much time posting on blogs, lol)? For me, reducing food reward down to nothing is only an excuse to further retreat from life. Look at photos of both Guyenet and Sisson. Who do you think has a richer, more passionate existence? Simple food, YES. Purposely tasteless food, NO. Don’t do it.

I agree that the number of calories consumed should be less than burned for weight loss and calculating, weighing, counting, tracking is the only way to be fully aware of how many you’re consuming. I’ve never allowed myself to gain more than 10-15 lbs throughout my adult life (I’m 54) except during my 4 pregnancies. I always took off weight by doing what I stated above . Something changed about 8 years ago. I find it extremely and tedious to track everything I eat. I’ve tried Fitness Pal, Weight Watchers, Sparkpeople, food journals and more. Those are all great tools but very difficult/time consuming to stick with. I found myself planning every single morsel. I was not able to lose any of the 10 lbs I’d like to drop because as soon as 3 dropped, 4 came back on. I have been yo-yo-ing like this for 6 yrs!!!! So discouraging! On Paleo, I eat strictly what hunter gatherers would eat. My meals are bigger than before and i eat whenever I am hungry. The first 4 lbs have come off within 8 days without even trying. With a lap band, sometimes volume of food is a problem. How important is it to eat a food from all three groups-protein, legumes, veggies- at every meal. Oh, I never get hungary, is it ok to skip a meal. Lunch or dinner I can skip occasionaly, but I never skip breakfast even tho breakfast is the most difficult meal to eat due to the lapband.
